Sleepy Sam(s)

May 21, 2008 · Dolls

Hooray again for all the swell comments and thoughtful rec's from the last post!
I slogged through all eight-hundred-and-something of them, and found the gals that the RNG chose. Blaze, Amy, Marisa, Rebecca, and Angela...all of you have emails in your inboxes from me, and I'll get your fabric packages out the door as soon as I get your addresses from you. And thank you so much to everyone else for indulging me and letting me share some of my extra fabric-stash with you.

But back to the regularly-scheduled making of things!

I've been sketching these really cute characters lately, and we have named them "The Sleepy Kids". I think it's because they look as if they've had hard lives at the ripe old age of 7 or 8, and have very sleepy eyelids. Anyway, I've been plotting to make a sleepy boy doll, and sketching about that, too. I drafted an initial pattern, and made the prototype as a birthday gift for my pal Devlin, and now I can show it to you since it's already been gifted.

Sleepy Sam, version one:

Some_girls_2508
Some_girls_2510 Some_girls_2509

I love him (and so, I think, does Devlin and his bada** wife, Mandy). But I wanted to tweak the pattern just a bit, in the way the head attaches to the body and also the arms.

So I set back to work on the pattern, and made a second version of Sleepy Sam yesterday afternoon:

Some_girls_2518
As you can see, I kept the shape of the excellent little legs exactly as they were.

They're both such dapper little chaps.

These little guys are so amazing! So handsome and sweet. Amazing work. I always love the fabrics you choose to put together.

Shannon Benavidez · May 26, 2008 at 03:10 AM

This new doll is amazing! I love his face and the body design is so curious and good! I love the legs. I think the first one is even better than the second one because I like his skinnier neck and his shirt... and the red striped pants. Great work, Emily!

Marie · May 25, 2008 at 11:43 PM

Love the sleepy kids. Very Oliver Twist of you.

Wondering if that polka dot fabric in the background is vintage? I think I have some of that too!

Lotta · May 25, 2008 at 02:41 AM

super cute! love the faces. Do you have dolls for sale on your etsy? Do you ever create custom dolls?

Molly Kate · May 25, 2008 at 02:04 AM

Are you brilliant or what? I love the tired little eyes, and the round tummies!

Melissa · May 23, 2008 at 02:45 PM

Oh I love them!!! Will you post the pattern, like with the girl ones? I love making your dolls for gifts as well as humanitarian aid. You are a neat treat!

Kelly harker · May 22, 2008 at 05:45 PM

Those sleepy faces make me want to give them hot chocolate and read bedtime stories to them. They are so wonderful x

Jenny · May 22, 2008 at 05:43 PM

Awe, these are sooooo cute! The dark haired one reminds me a little of "Ted Kennedy", of course, lots younger & cuter :)

Lise · May 22, 2008 at 11:26 AM

The new dolls are just wonderful. I would love to know how you do thier darling faces with the endearing expressions. It looks like watercolors but I doubt that is possible...
~Emily, another dollmaker who has a lot to learn about making faces...

Ravenhill · May 22, 2008 at 12:48 AM

Thank you again Emily! I can't wait to get my little package of goodies!

I love the new dolls. They remind me of my baby Daphne. She has the most adorable sleepy eyes. =)Actually the round bodies remind me of her too!

angela · May 22, 2008 at 12:25 AM

Love the round belly!!! Maybe he is sleepy because he had such a delicious dinner where he stuffed his face silly!

Rubyellen · May 21, 2008 at 11:53 PM

Oh those little feet!
You have outdone yourself this time!

april · May 21, 2008 at 11:33 PM

Ugh! So crushing, but none of those names belong to me! Sleepy Sam is rather cute though. I really like the new version of the head/neck too. Are you sure you didn't forget to list my name too??? :-) Oh, I just love your work. I finally hung the sleepy girl prints I ordered from you a while back and my daughter adores them. Originally, the plan was one for above each girl's bed but my oldest insisted that both go to her bed-head. I guess I will be ordering again soon!

Lisa · May 21, 2008 at 11:18 PM

oh my gosh they are so funny. I love them, especially their fat tums and skinny legs haha. I like to as skinny guys if they ever get old and fat if they'll wear their pants over their tums or under and these two are definitely over tum types haha.

Marissa · May 21, 2008 at 11:17 PM

Sweet :)

Humpty-Dumpty-esque!

Samantha · May 21, 2008 at 10:40 PM

Best legs ever! Also, I would love to see a *particularly* rotund little chap. It just seems adorable in my noggin.

michael · May 21, 2008 at 09:26 PM

I just love your sweet dolls. The faces you paint on them are so beautifully done.

Knitterella · May 21, 2008 at 09:18 PM

Thank you again Emily! I can't wait to get my bundle :)
Also I meant to tell you that I'm also very excited to try that sour cream apple pie...I've got all my ingredients ready to go! So thank you for posting that too ~ and of course love the new dolls. Their eyes are wonderful!

Marisa and Creative Thursday · May 21, 2008 at 09:16 PM

christina perry · May 21, 2008 at 07:46 PM

The second one is so improved by such small changes. I love the zip detail on the trousers and the legs are indeed excellent!

Laura · May 21, 2008 at 07:34 PM

Both are so cute Emily! You have really captured that sleepy face very well - they remind me of how my little girls look at the end of a long day :-) I especially like the second version - he looks so cuddly!

Jhoanna · May 21, 2008 at 06:38 PM

They have such sweet little faces, spindly legs, and plump tummies. I just love them!

i really like the colors of the first one.

Carol · May 21, 2008 at 06:14 PM

Fabulous. The legs kill me!

Natasha · May 21, 2008 at 06:14 PM

Dare I say that these might be my favorite of your dolls! Hope you get a chance to make a few for the next update!

Du Buh Du Designs · May 21, 2008 at 05:47 PM

They're both lovely!! I can't decide which one is cuter!
Danita

Danita · May 21, 2008 at 05:29 PM

Okay. So when you were writing about Wife Mandy I thought you were saying she is bada and the ** would tell me what bada means. Am I an idiot or what?
Love Sleepy Sam!
I especially love the second one because he kinda looks like my grandfather, Poppa Sam who passed last fall. He was ever so dapper and charming...one of the most charming men one ever could meet. But also kind of raw and crass at the same time in the way New Yorkers are so talented!
Kisses,
R.

risa · May 21, 2008 at 05:05 PM

cute new dolls! and i got excited thinking i had won the giveaway, only to realize that i didn't have an email from you. i guess amy is a common name, huh?

amy · May 21, 2008 at 05:00 PM

So cute. They look to me like they have terrible allergies, but maybe I'm projecting!

Jessie B. · May 21, 2008 at 04:59 PM

Just wanted to stop by and say hi! I love checking out all your little creations!

Becki · May 21, 2008 at 04:54 PM

You think of every detail, I love them!!!

denise · May 21, 2008 at 04:48 PM

...Q-tuh!

I especially like the second version doll, his chubby little head goes adorably with that chubby little body. I love the color combinations, they're so whimsical & special. I think your Sophie dolls will love 'em!

Congratulations to the lucky winners!

Haha these guys are the best! I just made a post about Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree that you would like if you have not read it.
