The Black Apple › Inside A Black Apple

To make things with now, to make things with later

July 23, 2007 · Craftsy (Mine)

I split up the H. Potter reading into two days, and finished yesterday afternoon. All I can say is...well...goodness gracious. There was so much provocative moral complexity and so many characters gained so much dimension in that last book, well beyond my expectations. Well done, Ms. Rowling.
Well done, indeed.

On the crafty front, I have just a few little summer goals in mind. One is to make a new quilt for the common good (aka, the living room couch) and this goal has been much thought about, but so far not a square has been cut toward its end. I just bribed myself with some inspiring, amazing orders full of beautiful, beautiful new fabric from Reprodepot and Superbuzzy.

This beautiful new stuff, from Repro, really seems lovely and Liberty-ish to me. Does anyone else see that? Especially that pink one in the center...I love it so fiercely, I feel like I should try to order more yardage (or I'll get horde-y and weird about it).

Wonderful fairy tale fabric from both places! Woohoo...every time I think that those Japanese have done the very best fairy tale fabric ever, they top themselves, like with this stuff:

Some_girls_1550

and, of course, this stuff...the scribbly pink and black on white which I've been obsessing over for MONTHS! Months, I tell you:

Some_girls_1549

I love what the fabrics say the most. The little elephants in the bathtub say "I wish I could melt into the water like a mermaid". And the scribbly guys say "We live in the country of children" (or something along those lines). That stuff I feel like I should mostly horde for future little applets. I always get gripped with the fear that suddenly, when I have a little person, all the amazing kids fabric will just dry up and go away. It is a big time fear of mine.

Happy Monday, my dears!

I know! Buy a hoarding pile and a making pile. That is what I do. Only, I hoard for greeds sake.

Oh, for greed's sake...HA

Oh, those are delightful fabrics!! Melting into the water like a mermaid??? WOW,pretty heavy stuff for a little elephant.. he's deep... xoxxo

Little Applets?? Oh, the thought....;)

Well, you win the award for best fabric stash of the month!

Wonderful fabrics. I am very eager to see the final product!

wow, those are beautiful! I understand (and feel) your desire to hoard them. I'm in the process of trying to cut through my own hoarded stash, built up over the last few years.

little applets? Oh my oh my, I cannot even FATHOM what a fantastically whimsical and joyful childhood they would find with you! I understand the fear - I'm half-tempted these days to buy fabric and make and put up baby clothes for those nephews, nieces, and godchildren I hope to have one day. (I only want them part-time, you see =) ) AND since "Girly Style Wardrobe" came out, I've been begging my girlfriends to promise me a girl in their future, just to justify purchasing the book - so far, no bites.

and oh, Snape's Patronus. *sigh* Could you believe it? I cried. Even my stoic boyfriend teared up at that one! Well done, indeed, Ms. Rowling, I say.

Emily! I do not have your current email address! Or your phone number! Help! It's been ages and that makes me sad! Email me at kdiskand@yahoo.com, I have something to send your way! Exclamation points!

I still haven't even purchased my Harry Potter book yet. I keep telling myself its because I want to re-read the 6th one first, but really I think its because I don't want the whole thing to end...
Anyhow I'm working on documentary about Harry Potter fans ( which makes it even weirder that I haven't cracked the book yet,) but check it out if you're interested! http://www.wearewizards-themovie.com/
Those fabrics are lovely lovely... I can't wait to see your quilt!

Gaia · July 23, 2007 at 04:29 PM

Emily, I love all the fabric! You have such great taste! I also love your line, "when I have a little person" what a cute way of putting it. :) I hope that one day you will have a special little person that you can buy all the best fabric for!

Glad you enjoyed the Harry Potter book, it was most excellent! I have fabric envy. Love your colour and pattern choices. Such gorgeous, gorgeous fabrics...

Ever since I started looking for a purse on etsy I've begun feeling a deep urge to buy up some fabrics... I was used to the sorry old fabric stores I used to go to with my mom, but now I'm seeing all of these amazing new designs, the japanese fabrics, Heather Bailey, etc... it's all so tempting, but I haven't sewn in years and I don't have a sewing machine. :(

Those fabrics are just absolutly gorgeous! I'm very very jealous. :)

My weekend was sucked up almost entirely by Harry Potter as well and I just wanted to say that I wholeheartedly agree with you- it was simply fantastic!

I'm also so jealous of your fabrics. I keep avoiding purchasing from superbuzzy because of the prices, but every time I see the loot people get from there I know I'm going to have to bite the bullet. Hopefully the next restock isn't too far off ;)

I can't wait to see what your new quilt is going to look like. You did such a great job with the last one.

Marilyn · July 23, 2007 at 08:55 PM

Hi, I love your work! Your paintings, drawings, everything that comes from your hand is plain lovely. Those fabrics are
gorgeous-I especially like the second pink one in the last photo 'cause it reminds me of a book that I had that taught how to make little critters with your thumb and an ink pad..which then bothers me when I think of how I don't know where that book went...

nancy · July 23, 2007 at 09:46 PM

Cool fabrics. Saw the Potter film Sunday. Going to have to read the books as so much in the movie seemed to come out of nowhere.

Janet · July 23, 2007 at 09:53 PM

great fabric! i love, love, love all the japanese imports but shy away from them because they are such a craze right now. i should get over that. i know what you mean about hoarding. now i have tons of fabric that i am tired of working with. ordered a couple prints from your shop last night. can't wait!

cindy · July 23, 2007 at 11:02 PM

I have some stuff horded away for future kids myself. And, still it seems that stuff just gets cuter and cuter. Irrational fear I am sure.

Jane · July 24, 2007 at 01:12 AM

love the fabric - but hey- what about that book - ? - I too had a two day marathon and L-O-V-E-D the unfolding of the story and the resolution of so many things! wonderful. I haven't been quite in this world since I finished it!

katie · July 24, 2007 at 04:33 AM

oooohhh! fabric love! I, too, can easily get "all hordy" with fabrics! : )

Marjorie · July 24, 2007 at 08:04 AM

Oh, I think I am in love with that elephant fabric.

Somebody up there mentioned Snape's Patronus. Funny, that's one thing that just keeps making me stop and take a deep breath ever since I finished the book on Saturday. Something in this horrible person saying, "Always" just about does me in.

I spent 19 hours yesterday reading practically the entire book. From Chapter 4 to the very end. So today, I needed my eyes to look at something other than 12 pt. Garamond!......those beautiful fabrics did the trick. So pretty. I hoarde fabric, too. And pretty patterned paper and cool jars, and....

Oh, love the fabrics. I've been resisting buying anything until I actually get started on the reconstruct/deconstruct stuff sitting in my bin. What I wouldn't give for a weekend not taken up with craziness.

ambika · July 24, 2007 at 01:29 PM

I love your new fabrics! I took mine out Sunday to swoon over them and plan projects before secreting them away to the closet (We're in condo selling mode and all crafting is on hold until further notice). So, I am resisting the lure of Superbuzzy/Reprodepot and am very jealous of your new fabric stash....

i love your art! certainly you dont wander by mistake.
