It has been a really long time since I've tried a crafty process that is totally and completely new to me. That is partially why I was so excited when I ordered a whole bunch of needle felting supplies last week from these folks. The came a few days ago, and last night Sara and I tried our hand at making some little skunky fellows...
SAM (my skunk, the fattie one in the scarf): "Hey! Hanging out on top of this washing machine is making me so hungry! It must be the kinetic energy of the spin cycle. Say, where are all of those Girl Scout cookies?"
MR. PARTYHAT (Sara's little guy): "You ate them all, because you are a piggy-skunk, and there are never any Samoas left for me".
Aren't they sweeties? My Sam has the greatest mohawk. He is such a punk little skunk.
I found needle-felting to be really fun and intuitive and...kinda mindless. In the best possible way, I mean. It made me realize that I really don't have a breezy craft that I can really do while watching a movie or talking, and have neither of them suffer (except for maybe the cutting-out part of quilting and doll-making, and that doesn't last forever). The intuitive part of it is so great and refreshing...and it wasn't terribly difficult (which I had feared initially, possibly because so much needle felted stuff I find, well, unfortunate). I don't kid myself that I'll be instantly making absolute loves like Jenn's bears, but I am so looking forward to designing some creatures of my own.
This weekend I'm planning mostly "hole-up-in-the-studio" time, which always makes me happy. Maybe I'll get to needlin' some more felted pals...
Oh, and THANK YOU for all of the sweetie pie comments about my new spectacles. It is so nice to be able to read street signs and the like. Also, about the brand...I think they are some sort of generic deal...not designer.
Happy Weekend sweet peas!

Oh, how cute! If I was to have an affair, it would be with SAM (j/k). But seriously, LOVE him! Perhaps a shop update is in order???

Love these! And I am so impressed that this is your first attempt at needle felting--you already look like a pro! My first few tries have not been very successful...and I don't dare try doing it while watching tv for fear of drawing blood ;)

Oh, they're so cute, cute, cute!! I've tried needle felting a few times, but seem to get frustrated by working with such small pieces. You've done a wonderful job with the details here!! Sweet!

I can't believe how well you did having never done this before, They are both darling. Hmm, maybe needle felting isn't as scary as I thought?

These are totally precious! I agree whole-heartedly that a lot of needle felted creatures are a bit icky in my opinion. But these are too super cute! Great job!

I like the little skunks tongue the best, all sticking out and just a little bit on the sassy side....
or perhaps that is how skunks flirt?
it's hard to say.

I am so glad you left the link for the starter kits for felting. It has really piqued my interest lately, what with all the felting going on in the craft world these days. Perhaps soon I can try it myself. The bird kit at the site you mentioned is cute!
Your skunks, by the way, are absolutely precious, and very Flower-esque (you know, Flower from "Bambi"). ;)
Nichole · February 24, 2007 at 08:04 PM
You must realize how beyond adorable those are... I've been planning to pick up a few felting needles for ages now, but I think those skunks have toppled all opposition + procrastination.
You and your friend did a great job.
tangerined · February 25, 2007 at 02:53 AM
what a sweet squirrel and love his little pink tongue...why do some people hate them? i think they're adorable..maybe since as a child i fed a squirrel peanut butter on crackers that came to our kitchen window....i even gave him a name which i forgot...oh lord i'm old!!
Tricia · February 25, 2007 at 01:38 PM
the squirrels' name was 'Chester'!!
Tricia · February 25, 2007 at 01:42 PM
Oh, man, i'm off track...that was a SKUNK and not a squirrel!
well, I did that comment half asleep..so there...
Tricia · February 26, 2007 at 01:48 PM
our new friend the skunk may get the name rikitikitakiskunkishmikishmaki, or skunki for short (pronounced like skoonki) :) Our friend Deimantė picked it out.
