Here I am today, doing my best impression of both a Hitchcock girl (you had to see the tweed skirt and heels to get the full effect), and a person who can see properly. I've been cheating the system thus far in my life, by never owning prescription glasses...which wouldn't have been cheating, only I can't see clearly more than 3 feet in front of my face. I finally bit the bullet and we went last week in the whirlwind of birthday stuff to get an exam, pick out glasses for me, etc. They were finally ready to pick up yesterday.
After telling the eye doctor that I was "so relieved he wasn't mad at me" (why do these things come out of my mouth) for waiting so long to get my (bad) eyes examined, he responded:
"Mad? No...Frankly, I'm impressed".
PS: Thank you for the great response to my last post! It felt oddly vulnerable to write about (maybe admitting that it doesn't come naturally or easily), for some reason, so thank you especially for all of your thoughtful words.

Wonderful new glasses...good for you (I personally treated myself to Versace glasses this year, and I am truly in love...plus I get tons of compliments!)

what pretty new eyes! i love them, especially since i'm doing just the thing you did - that is, putting off the optometrist for entirely too long. may i ask what brand they are? stylish frames like that are very good motivation for getting "looked at." ♥

Oooh, you have a nice set of four eyes there, if I may say so myself! :) Hmm, I need to get some new eyes, too (due to some havoc à la baby). And btw, you also have some wonderful eye-brows... I just noticed them! *commence jealousy*

I love your glasses! Mine are my favorite fashion accessory! As well as allowing me to see and to not get headaches... but that's not near so important as fashion, am I right!?

Cute glasses! I wear glasses when using the computer, and always feel as though I turn into a more sophisticated, intelligent version of myself!
Cat · February 22, 2007 at 08:45 AM
Adorableness abounds my dear emily...those glasses rock!!! plus now you can do the whole super hero thing, glasses on, you are a mild mannered artist, glasses off and you are "The Black Apple" protector of all things fantastic.
(can you tell I spent yesterday in the comic shop?)

Oh, Meg, I had glasses like those in the eighties, too. Mine even had a blue musical note etched into the glass at the bottom. (I was sooooo kewl)
Now, Miss Em, my current glasses look a lot like the ones you are modeling. Are yours Micheal Kors?

Cute cheaters! As a long-time four-eyed girl, may I say "Welcome to the club!" I, like Meg above, have had many bad pairs of specs.....uh, the horror. I just bought a cute pair of vintage frames in NYC, and I'm excited to get my new lenses put in them.

Gorgeous glasses!
I'm a closet eyeglass freak. Ever since I can remember I've secretly wished for less-than-perfect eyesight just so I can have a pair of glasses and maybe even a hip case for them.
When I was about 12, my best friend got a new prescrciption and new frames, so I got to keep her old glasses. I just popped out the lenses and wore the frames. I thought they made me look cute.
My wish may come true, though. I think I might need reading glasses. Yay! For some reason, imagining myself reading a book while wearing glasses appeals to me much more than reading without them.

Cute glasses, polka spots & Hitchcock girl look! Love it all!
Nice to have an eye doc with a sense of humor!

The perfect choice for the loveliest face. Can you imagine what life will be like, when you can see 3 feet ahead of you? Are you experiencing any strange sensations yet? I got some, but they were "bifocals", not bottle bottom, but nice, intelligent... So, of course they threw me into..Ta-da,Vertigo. So, I lost them on purpose. Now, I just suffer a little on tired evenings. Otherwise, I think I am seeing okay???Oops, I just bumped my nose into the screen, sorry, excuse me, pardon me, were those your toes?... hee hee...

as a silent reader and admirer, i thought i would pop in on the glasses post. i have had to wear glasses since preschool. i've went through severel big square glasses with mickey mouse on the side (because apparently my mom hated me). i kept breaking them, she kept buying them. but, after all those years, i still prefer to wear glasses over contacts. and those are particularly nice.
oh, and hi.

darling! darling! darling!
heather · February 22, 2007 at 07:20 PM
So wonderful! I just started wearing glasses about a year ago and am finally becoming accustomed to being a "real glasses wearer." What brand are those little cuties?
Villain Extraordinaire · February 22, 2007 at 08:25 PM
I do get the Hitchcock thing, but I also get "photo booth portrait, c. 1954" (handcolored, of course). Very cute!
Stephy · February 22, 2007 at 08:27 PM
Wow, 3 feet? You poor girl! I'M impressed that you somehow got away without 'em for this long! You should get an award or medal or something.
I remember back in high school when my eyesight went down the tube and I was too nervous to get my eyes checked (doctors are scary people). I vividly recall having my best friend quietly read me the questions that were written on the chalkboard during exams because I couldn't see them and had an assigned seat in the very back of the room. I finally got glasses going into college and I've loved them ever since. :)
Kudos to you on your choice of frames as well. They look smashing!

You look adorable! Housekeeping doesn't come easily or naturally to me either. I fall in both camps -- sometimes I can live quite well in my dustbin, and other times, I hate how I cannot keep it all neat and tidy. Frankly, your apartment looks very neat, tidy and sweet. It fills me with envy -- it's so cute!
Gina · February 22, 2007 at 08:34 PM
Those are fabulous glasses. And they look great on you!
I haven't been the eye doctor in almost 3 years, but I used to go regularly. And the last time I switched back to glasses after wearing contacts for almost 10 years. Too much hassel with the kids!
I really need new glasses though, mine are all scratched.
