Red Candy Buttons Make Everything Prettier

December 14, 2007 · Handmade Fashion

I got this pretty empire waist cream/grey striped sweater from the great Target maternity section (I don't even feel wierd about shopping in there anymore...that stuff if often 10X cuter than the non-pregnant-lady clothes!).
I bought the small and still had to take it in a little bit, so while it was in my studio, I decided to jazz it up a little bit.

A little contrasting thread, these buttons that look just like M+M's and we've got an even cuter sweater on our hands.

Yes!!! Haha. My friend Leona and I are always talking about how we get embarassed when we run into Target and find a bunch of adorable clothing...only to realize moments later that we are in the maternity section. I have bought things on occasion without even realizing that they were maternity...especially with so many maternity-esque styles out there lately. It's good to know that we aren't the only ones. :) It is also good to know that Target can provide such cute clothes when I actually do get pregnant.

emily, do you have a source for those little round frames behind you or are they just thrift finds? i've been looking and looking (well... okay, not very diligently). I love the set of drawers behind you with the shoes on top - is this new to your life? It's lovely.

I totally buy Target maternity clothes! They are awesome. My favorite was this dark green dress with these whimsical flowers growing up from the bottom, and a beautiful gold ribbon to tie up an empire waist. I totally bought it, and wear it proudly. Very cute sweater...

Hallelujah! I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one buying maternity items from Target even thought I'm not pregnant. Hilarious! And comforting.... :)

I am so glad someone else find the maternity section inspiring when not with child. :) I have done the same things with a couple skirts and tops. they are just so cute! Love the stitches.

That is so great! I'm glad I'm not the only one who a)loves target and b) especially loves the maternity section! There's also something easily-alterable about it all, too - like they were planning for people to use it, even though not with a baby-belly.

I totally agree about the maternity section! I felt weird about it before but there really is so much more cute stuff there! The buttons look adorable. I love changing buttons on things.

Ok, thank you. I have been buying clothes from their maternity section for over a year.. I swear that stuff is so super cute.. especially the sweaters! I have no qualms about it either. :)

So, I just bought a few pair of O Basics thanks to all of your raves and OMG if they're not the best. I was skeptical but with a review like yours they had to be good.. and they're soft and actually fit my L-XL legs.. so super cute too! :) Just blogged all about 'em so check it out. :)

Cute as a button!

Fabulous sweater. Also, I adore your mirror!

I love all the Target maternity love. I always want to buy things from there and then I chicken out. I feel empowered now... I was so in love with the green dress mentioned above! Now I think I should've just bought it.

emily-our fearless leader into the 'original'! i love the filter through which you view life- it's like you have a kinder, gentler, wonderfully aesthetic way about you. you are very inspirational.

I bought that same sweater, and two more in plain colors! I just started checking out this section at Target over the summer, I found the cutest dress and have been shopping there ever since.

I love what you did with the red buttons!

For all your blog readers, it is great for ladies with bigger busts. I can buy a much smaller size due to the bust allowance!

I know exactly what you mean about Target's maternity section - perfect for the busty non-pregnant as well. I bought a gorgeous summer dress there - deep blues and mustard satin bows. I love the added buttons, absolutely delicious.

I LOVE the Liz Lang clothes- and empire wastes have been so instyle, I haven't felt weird about wearing them at all!

Lindsey · December 17, 2007 at 12:57 PM

Oh, I adore that sweater. And I am now going to be shopping in the maternity section thanks to you.
I wish I were crafty like you.

So refreshing to see I'm one of many who finds the maternity section at Target tempting!

Love the embellishment.

ambika · December 17, 2007 at 06:13 PM

I, too, have bought maternity clothes at Target. What can I say? I have a maternity style bust.

BTW, Old Navy does cute maternity clothes too. : )

Shannon · December 17, 2007 at 06:27 PM

I've been reading this blog for awhile but this is my first time commenting - and wow, I didn't know the Target maternity section was so popular! I always get excited about the clothes then embarassed. as another reader posted, I feel empowered to shop on that rack now!

Liina · December 19, 2007 at 12:36 PM

I just spent $20 on fancy buttons and then I see this post - so inspired.

Great buttons make the world a better place. :)

While I was pregnant a few years ago, I discovered the wonder of the Motherhood Maternity stores as well! They have nice, inexpensive dresses for people who might have more ample hips than others. I still browse their sale racks even when I'm not pregnant.

Fussbunny · December 20, 2007 at 08:55 AM

this tells me that i *must* try harder to learn to sew!

and i love those booties in the background...:)

lou · December 21, 2007 at 12:24 AM

wow, those buttons really DO add punch! the other day i altered a bridesmaid dress from this summer. it was a strapless lemon yellow number. i cut off the skirt and am progressively adding red trip and straps to make it an all-season shirt.

I've been reading this blog for a while and really, really loving it. Thought I'd just write to let you know. You inspire me a great deal at a time in my life that I'm having a hard time finding my personal style. So, thanks!
