Skirting the Issue

May 06, 2007 · Daily Outfits, Handmade Fashion

I was ReproDepot-ing (yeah, that's a verb) the other day, and I was suddenly siezed with the desire to make some simple, summer skirts. These two fabrics were calling out "Make me into an A-line skirt! Do it! Don't ask questions!"

I think it has alot to do with the fact that I am having the hardest time finding skirts that I like lately...even at Anthropologie. That's right, I said it. Anthro has been dissapointing me in the skirt departement lately. And since I only wear skirts, really, that creates a conundrum.

I think I've mentioned before on the big blog before that I really don't sew too much clothing from the ground up...I do lots of tweaking and adding and subtracting, but I am terrified of patterns and therefore tend to shy away. The last time I made a bunch of my own skirts was a few years ago, when I was really into making these super-full petticoats out of vintage curtains and  bedskirts that I thrifted.

I set out to make my skirts, using a simple A-line one that fits well, and voila!
A few bias-tape waist-bands, some finicky zippers & 2 episodes of Netflixed TV later, and I had skirts!
I was astonished and very pleased with myself. I mean, it is ridiculously easy, but still. I made something from the ground up. And they look like real clothes on.

Skirt

(I think my outfits from the last few days illustrate the crazy weather-fluctuations that are happening here lately)

I could've gotten all fancy and lined them, but I have plenty of petticoats/underskirts to do the job. The mustardy one is what I'm wearing today, and it needs to be taken in a bit, but all in all they are just right!

PS: Thanks for all the Target-bag-alteration love! I'm glad you're with me on that one...

Sheesh! Is there anything you can't do? I love the new fashiony offshoot. You worked wonders with that bag and I want to try it on an older one that I have. Love the skirts too!

Congrats on the making of skirts! I'm a big fan of the A-line myself.

Excellent job with the skirts. They look great!

Oh, you are so clever. (Clever is in, like, my top three of favorite words, and I don't trot it out for just anthing.) I love a girl who knows what she wants and doesn't mind having to whip it up herself. Hooray for homemade skirts!

I agree with you - Anthropologie has not had the greatest skirts of late. But yours are great! I've been contemplating making myself something girly out of that bicycle fabric, too.

Very very VERY well done. I especially love the blue one with the underskirt peeking out!

Ah, me. You make me happy. So do your skirts.

cute! I've been meaning to make some new summer skirts. p.s. where are those red shoes from? I love them!

Liz · May 07, 2007 at 01:35 AM

I love these skirts! The blueish one is delightful with that pink bit sticking out. :]

yay for the skirts! I just made my own dress this weekend, the very first time I made an all by myself pattern! I am super super proud and love your skirts :)

your skirts look great!

you are right about anthro skirts. . it has been hard to find inspiration for good skirts. we think it has to do with people not wanting to buy skirts lately. ladies have become more dress people than skirt people.

janelle · May 07, 2007 at 08:23 AM

lovely! skirts have been a bit hard to find this season... I've been dissapointed as well. I love that you wear the petticoats peeking out from the hem--so fun! :)

Casey · May 07, 2007 at 09:31 AM

You are amazing! If I run a few errands and rearrange a room more satisfactorily, I've had a very productive day. I can't fathom how you do all the things you do, but that is what makes it fun to read this! Cute skirts.

Helen · May 07, 2007 at 07:16 PM

Awesome! Kudos to you!

Beth · May 07, 2007 at 07:26 PM

I made my first skirt last year and it wasn't too hard. I liked the fit, but not the print. I may try to make some more this vacation. BTW I could not agree more about how the cheaper stores go one too many dodad overboard!

Jane · May 07, 2007 at 10:08 PM

Darling!

tiffany · May 08, 2007 at 10:17 AM

Wow! You are so awesome. These skirts are beautiful. You only wear skirts? Mysterious. Could you please share some photos of the super-full petticoats? I am so intrigued.

Claire · May 08, 2007 at 05:06 PM

I SO feel your pain in the skirt area. I've been looking everywhere for simple, cotton, print, knee length skirts and zip, nada. I've made myself a few before and I guess this Summer I'll be making more...now to be twirly or not twirly? That's the ?.
