I'm not a Knitter,

April 26, 2007 · Daily Outfits, Handmade Fashion

I just play one...when I'm embellishing skirts.

This skirt was a Target find, pretty boring, and needed to be taken in at the waist. So, whilst it was in my studio for the taking-in part, I decided to gussy it up with some patch pockets as well.

They (the pockets) are super simple...made of nice, thick wool felt and jazzed up with possibly my favorite ribbon ever (even though, as previously stated, I am not a knitter). I really love instructional diagrams (who doesn't?) and so I'm crazy for this ribbon. It is still available, as far as I know, from the great Reprodepot.

I think the top is from Target, too...and I dyed it a nice tea-stain color (it was formerly white) last winter. As you can see, the books were still on the floor at this point.

I love this ribbon--I found it browsing around Reprodepot last week after you posted about the Cram Cream tapes and had to get some for myself. This is a great use for it.
Snazzy socks, by the way!

It warms my heart to see you buy clothes at Target. I am somewhat ashamed that I buy so much of my wardrobe there but I can't help it! Everything is so cute and SO cheap! It is so easy to shop there because I never hem and haw over whether or not an item is worth the money. They always are! I have learned though that while Target is great for tops, skirts and cute jackets, it's best to steer clear of the pants and sweaters. They just don't hold up and show their cheapness after just one washing.
PS You have recently inspired my to try to alter some of my Target finds...I love your new blog, it's so motivational!

LOVE the ribbon, and those knee-highs are just wonderful. They're the perfect splash of color to the outfit.

You are just to darn cute! You have such great style Emily! I'm tempted to start a fashiony blog too...I love to dress up and put thought into what I'm wearing even if I'm just jaunting off to the book store or something...actually even if I'm just sitting in the house by myself...my puppies don't seem to appreciate my fashion efforts. Alas, what's a girl to do but start a fashion blog! Thanks for the inspiration! Oh, and I'm super excited to get your hedgie painting that I ordered last week. Just curious does he have a name? If not I was contemplating naming him Oliver.
Also, may ask...how do you tea dye stuff? Any tips you may have I would super appreciate! Merci! Cece

So cool what you did with that skirt! It's adorable. You have given me some ideas here for updating my bland old wardrobe...thanks!

Oh ack! LOVE that ribbon! Don't know how I missed it at reprodepot before -- I just went and snapped some up.

Hrm... I think I am officially de-lurking with this comment. Go, me! I read Black Apple every day and have bought a few of your prints. You are the cutest damned thing -- keep being great!

Gosh... I love love love your socks!!! And you MUST do an entire post (or two) devoted to them!! Does it sound strange that I want to see your sock drawer? Because I do.

I also am a sock wearing/loving/collecting girl... and yours are some of my favorite.... where do you get them all?

xoxo,
Jenna Lou

janelle · April 26, 2007 at 08:12 PM

I just got that exact ribbon in the mail today! I don't even know what to do with it yet, but look at it! Maybe some clothes-altering is in order!

Thanks for the inspiration!

this post reminds me how idle i truly am - how industrious you are!
really, i have sewing, dyeing, embelish projects crawling up to the roof here, waiting, waiting.................

and yes, another perfect shoe and sock combination. How do you keep on inspiring me with your feet? it's crazy! stop it!

lou · April 27, 2007 at 12:50 AM

That's REALLY cute. I like changing clothes around--somehow it's deeply satisfying to me. However, I'm sticking to hand sewing, or just switching buttons. I love the new pockets made of felt though! Great idea as no edges to worry about.

Helen · April 27, 2007 at 12:53 AM

LOVE the ribbon. Too cute!

Hey Emily I love the skirt pockets, the trim is to die for. Talking of knitting I myself was never very good at knitting but I have decided to try my luck at knitting a scarf so we will see.

kelly z · April 27, 2007 at 01:14 AM

Another perfect ensemble, as always!
I must second the request for tips on tea-dying (or, where to look for tips)... I had my wedding-dress made out of silk-satin so that I would be able to tea-dye it and wear it again. But this was 4.5 years ago..
Thanks again for all the prettiness you bring into our lives!

Jessie · April 27, 2007 at 10:25 AM

I love Target. Such cute clothes there, and so much of everything else you could possibly need, too.

You're such crafty chick. I wish I had a fourth of your talent.
XOXO

i'm actually going to target today to see if they have any clothes on the cheap that need some embellishing. :)
