You're under arrest, 'Cause you're the best...

1valentine

Hey, you guys!
Thank you for all of that incredible birthday sweetness yesterday. You ARE the best (and the title of my post came from a hysterically bad Serge Gainsbourg rap that we were listening to compulsively in the car yesterday). All of those sweet, well-wishing little notes...piled up so high that it took me a good long while to read each one.

Now it's time for me to say "Happy ______ to you", and I hope it is a nice one. I love Valentine's day, but not the stressy, spend-y version.  I love the version that was practiced in my house when we were young: we would all sit on the kitchen floor with doilies and construction paper and pens and markers and my mom, brothers and sister and I try to covertly make each other Valentines secretly, hiding what we were writing/drawing/cutting from the others. If you don't have time to do that, you can always print out a handful of these cuties.

I love the giving little presents to friends and family, and making things with your hands, and baking things. And the red and polka dots and hearts that are so pervasive. And those heart-shaped lollies as pictured above. That's what I love about V-day.

So Happy Valentine's to you and yours, and may the day be fun and sweet and calm.

xoxo, big time

Back at you babe! :)

I've been reading your blog for quite a while now and really enjoy all of your art work. You are one of my daily must reads. I'm probably your mom's age,but I think I was drawn to your work because it is very similar to my daughters. She enjoys peeking in on your blog too. I may stop by your etsy shop and order her a little print for her 18th birthday that is coming up in March. Keep producing all the lovely things that you do,because they are truly eye candy!:)

Happy Valentine's Day to you too! I'm doing a post about Girls I Love, and the girl in The Quiet Room was one of those, so I hope you don't mind if I use the image of the painting, credited to you, in the post? I'll take it down if you don't like it- it'll be here:

Aww you too! My b/f and I don't really make a big fuss out of today. We exchange cards, he cooks dinner and I bake a cake but that's pretty normal for us. No gifts. :)

Marilyn · February 14, 2008 at 02:07 PM

That's what I like most about Valentines day too, all the pink and red (especially together!) that's around everywhere!

Tizzalicious · February 14, 2008 at 02:43 PM

~HAPPY VALENTINES DAY~

...I couldn't agree more about "childhood memories" & "today". I couldn't wait to make those valentine mailboxes for elementary school. The ones you would hand-make and decorate out of a shoe box, and all your friends would secretly add there cards to you.
aawww...Those were great times ;)

Happy Valentines Day!
Here Here!
I love the trappings of Valentines - hearts and red an' pink and lacey and sparkely - but would much rather exchange some meaningful "i love yous" that worry about proving my love with store bought gift - luckily the hubby is on board with these ideas - so thanks!

anaclare · February 14, 2008 at 05:48 PM

I love all those things tooo!!! I spent hours and wee hours, making jam and buttercream filled shortbread heart cookies, and watching love films, and waiting for my beau to get back. Oh, and you will appreciate this, I woke up to giant giant pink with brown edge Charlie Brown roses! Isn't that funny! In a home made vase!! Gotta love it!! off to bake our dinner, have a lovely evening Miss E!xoxo

Oh yes - exactly what we love about Valentine's too. Wrote about it in my blog - one teenage daughter made us cards, another wrote the funniest poem ever, and my oldest daughter baked her boyfriend some cinnamon streusel muffins :) I know I've been doing a good 'mom' job when my kids focus on the sweet and simple things :) You're going to make a fabulous mom someday, Miss Emily :) hugs to you . . . ~ Bee

Love your sight and your illustrations. (and your wardrobe and your apartment...this list goes on and on!)

Thank you for providing the be mine valentines. They are completely adorable and I loved using them for my son's valentines for his class.
You can see how I used them here:

And I agree with you about making and baking and using your hands and being creative and all that good stuff.
Cheers!

I love valentines day, I always treat myself by buying lots of little pink and red heart shapes treats which turn up once a year (like pink heart bath bombs, pin tacks, hole punches etc)

I wanted to thank you, though for making my valentines extra special!! I had a note from the post office yesterday saying they had something for me at the depot, and when i went to collect it, there was a pretty red label and a familiar cute little hedgehog on it... and I was soooo excited! I couldn't believe it. My boyfriend (who is also a fan of yours) had secretly bought me my *absolute favourite* print of yours for me: The Quiet Room.

I just wanted to say thankyou for making such beautiful pictures!

Ally · February 15, 2008 at 05:09 AM

I don't make a fuss about Valentine's. Last night we had grilled cheese for dinner - so no romantic meals with candles and wine! (it was good cheese though!)

Happy belated birthday too! - mine's coming up next month, 33 this time - I'm feeling old!!!!

Katy · February 15, 2008 at 07:13 AM

Happy belated birthday and valentine's day. Those little valentines are adorable.

We got a ton of heart shaped lollipops similar to yours from my mom. She's always looking for a reason to find cute candy in shapes of animals, etc.

Tanya Pshenychny · February 15, 2008 at 11:11 PM
