Ragamuffin Beret

February 04, 2008 · Knitting

Mine was kind of a crummy weekend (computer crashes, stressful conversations, etc.) but I've got high hopes for this week.
There was a little bit of happy knitting, though. On Friday night, Josiah went to bed early-ish, and I had just started knitting an impromptu brim for a hat on my circular needles. I hopped into bed with my knitting, and the longer it went on the more I was determined to see if I could make a beret...just winging it without a pattern.

It worked! (mostly). I learned a few things, but I have a nice, quirky, lightweight beret now.

It is knitted from this beautiful thick + thin yarn I bought on Etsy.

Now I'm working on a red one!

I love the yarn! How is it that you make wearing a hat so cute? I always look ridiculous!

rachel · February 04, 2008 at 03:54 PM

It suits you very well!
My mom always used to call me a ragamuffin when I was little. :)

Ash · February 04, 2008 at 04:08 PM

Oh that is so cute. :D

I found this http://www.slmetalworks.com/beds_a.html and it reminded me of the bed in one of your paintings.

Excellent hat~

I've been working on a beret as well, from a Louisa Harding pattern... first I twisted it up on itself, then it was made far too small (I'm using a sport weight yarn, where it calls for worsted.) I am so determined to finish this baby... I am now on attempt #3!

Samantha · February 04, 2008 at 05:17 PM

it looks great, and cozy- especially with that white sky and winter trees!

kate · February 04, 2008 at 06:01 PM

It looks great, I love it!

Queta · February 04, 2008 at 07:42 PM

......your a very talented girl miss emily.
I don't actually knit, but you inspire me to try.
By the looks of that beret, I would have thought you'd been knitting for years.
I'm sorry to hear you had a crummy week-end.
I hope you have a better week :D
<3 one of your applets from California..

Too adorable. And if I tried to do a hat pattern free, I'd end up with a mess. So well done!

ambika · February 04, 2008 at 08:47 PM

how did you make it?

Esmay Ebby · February 04, 2008 at 08:55 PM

wow.. a great feat for a beginner. i don't think i could've mastered that stitch design. i'm too impatient. i prefer knitting without having to pay attention to adding and dropping stitches. what is the name of this stitch pattern?

here's to a happier week!

shirley · February 04, 2008 at 09:21 PM

Oh, how I wish I knew how to knit. I have tons of handspun yarn, just waiiiiting for me, but I still haven't mastered it yet. Great hat!

Brooke · February 04, 2008 at 09:38 PM
