We went to see Sweeney Todd on opening weekend, I was so, so elated. I left the theater flipping out with happiness and relief, 'cause Tim really pulled it off.
In fact, I hope that as the movie wrapped, he was singing to himself Henry Higgins' song from My Fair Lady: "I did it, I did it...I said that I would do it, and indeed I did" (or something to that effect).
On the second viewing this past weekend, I was even more pleased. The clothes are incredible (that Colleen Atwood is really something else...she designed the clothes for one of my favorite clothes-movies, Lemony Snickett's A Series of Unfortunate Events). She also designed costumes for many other Tim Burton classics like Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, etc.
The HBC is wonderful, wonderful, and Mister Depp is too. So is the little guttersnipe that plays Toby. And Alan Rickman, who is always a dream. If you aren't afraid of Hammer-style comical bloodletting, you must get yourself to the cineplex and see for yourself!
Thanks, Tim Burton! It was one of my very favorite Christmas presents.
And Happy New Year, dear applets!
I have to go get cracking on the food and drinks I promised would be availed to our friends later on this evening.
I have silly party hats. But I think they'll still want food.

I was wondering if you'd post about Sweeney Todd. ;) I LOVED it as well! Funny you mentioned My Fair Lady, because I was actually sitting in the theater thinking of HBC's career and where's she's come from... thought she'd be great as Eliza Doolittle.
Wishing you a new year full of fresh inspiration and new delights.

I can't believe I have not yet seen it!! Maybe this evening...

You said the magic phrase "Hammer-style comical bloodletting". I looove Hammer movies, but I also love Burton, Depp, and the broadway show so I was already planning to see this even before I read it. :)
Have a wonderful New Year!

I couldn't agree more-- Tim Burton totally pulled it off without lapsing into his (albeit charming) occasionally over the top personal aesthetic/artistic cliches. bravo! i saw it and, despite not knowing you personally, the outfits TOTALLY made me think of you! the costumes were truly amazing and inspiring. i particularly loved HBC's stripy sailor outfit.

Allurement, charm, elegance, exquisiteness, fascination and whimsical, eclectic, damaged, morbid, curious, distorted, macabre, twisted, eccentric, observant, grotesque, dark romanticism!!! Mr. Tim Burton & Ms. Helena Bonham Carter - a daughter - congratulation!
coffee & diazepan · December 31, 2007 at 04:58 PM
MMMMmmmmm Hmmm.... best movie I have seen in a LONG time. I loved it... waited outside the theatre so I could be one of the first to see it. Helena was wonderful, my favorite character. Three Cheers for Tim!

I cannot wait to see Sweeney Todd! I'm hoping for some babysitter action after I get back home next week so that I can venture to the theatre sans kiddos. Happy New Year, Emily! I can't wait to see what all you have in store for 2008! Hope it's another great year for you! :0)

I can't wait to see the movie! Happy New Year...hope your festivities went well. I am so thankful I discovered your blog...you have inspired me to put more art into my life...even without an artistic bone in my body!

Oh God, I know. I was so, so happy after I left. Mr. Burton finally redeemed himself of his recent mediocrity! Everything about it was beautiful, from the singing to wardrobe to the choice of actors. All absolutely spot-on.
Maddy · January 01, 2008 at 11:06 AM
OMG we tried to go and see it on Dec. 28th, but it's still not out here ~so we went to see "National Treasure 2 ~Book of Secrets" instead...it was pretty good!
I'm so anxious to see Sweeney Todd...it looks INCREDIBLE!!! THanks for the wonderful review :)
Danielle Nilsson · January 01, 2008 at 11:09 AM
I am so obsessed with Tim Burton. I was an extra in Big Fish and pretty much the high point of my LIFE was meeting him...sigh...a five minute conversation about a mechanical lion...love, love, love. And yes, he did it again.
rebekka · January 01, 2008 at 11:59 AM
I wish that I could see it.. especially since you mentioned Lemony Snicket.. which I loved! The blood-letting, unfortunately does not stop after I go to sleep. I wish they would make edited to TV versions for purchase because I surely would then purchase. I'm so glad you liked it though.

kiwi · January 01, 2008 at 10:20 PM
I ran right out and bought the soundtrack...I've been listening, learning the lyrics and admiring Stephen Sondheim...We saw the movie on Dec 21 and again on Dec 25...I want to go back again this week...we even had 'meat pies' at the Alamo Drafthouse...awesome!! I dearly LOVED this movie SO MUCH...can't wait till it comes out on DVD so I can watch it as much as I need to...My Friends, Johanna and Pretty Women are my 3 fave songs, but that might change next week...By the Sea is also great...sigh..so much...
donner · January 02, 2008 at 12:40 AM
So agree with you here! LOVED this movie!
dani · January 02, 2008 at 12:50 AM
i love stephen sondheim and tim burton and everyone involved with the movie. i wish the big chorus numbers hadn't been cut, every time i heard a hint of one i got excited to no avail. wasn't helena bonham carter a surprise with her pretty voice?
