Not that the Summer is over (in Georgia, we've got til' late September before we can even THINK about a bit of Fall coming our way), but still, these are some nice things I became smitten with this Summer...
I tried to find links for all of the things that were link-able in any kind of useful way:
- France Gall, amazing French pop chanteuse that I am absolutely obsessed with.
- S'mores (I don't think any linking is required here.) I got hooked on s'mores because they're actually pretty light, for a dessert (less than 150 calories) but are so satisfying and special.
- The "Up" series, gripping, incredible social experiment/documentary. I can't think of a single person I know who wouldn't really love this series...it's that iconic and human.
- The mighty Avocado...read some fun facts on wikipedia!
- O Lovelies socks from Sock Dreams. They are just...lovely.
- Fresca. I know it seems like an old-person drink, but it's soooo good. Perfect for summer.
- On the slightly risque front, Agent Provocateur. Their stuff is so beautiful (and yeah, a bit pricey). Don't click that link if you're easily troubled by sheer bras left un-airbrushed.
- Finally, running. Josiah and I started running together at the beginning of the summer (the worst possible time to start something like that), and we're still super slow and in the fetal stages of it, but (I think) it's good for me. It kicks my ass, but in a good way (again, I think).
Sigh... when I was little, I really hated the summer and craved the Fall. I would cry (yes, cry) when school ended in the Spring, and rejoice when it was time to go back. As I've gotten a bit older, I've gotten better and appreciating the different seasons for what they are, and the good things they bring, but I always seem to be over Summer just a little too early.
Happy Friday, my dears!

oh, i heart the up series! i watched the whole thing about a year ago and became completely involved in all of the people's lives. though it was weird to watch the dvds one after the other so quickly and see the people age so rapidly. it's a wonderful series and i can't wait for the next installment (which isn't for a while, i don't think).

ohhh avocados are definitely something i enjoyed too.
Hilary Glime · August 17, 2007 at 06:40 PM
Oh did you hear the english version of Laisse tomber les filles?
Hilary Glime · August 17, 2007 at 06:44 PM
France Gall and O Lovelies....o yes, I agree.
I also was very fond of the UP series.

Sock Dreams is one of my favourite shops! I think its the free shipping that really makes me happy because I can order two or three pairs at a time and decide which style I like better. At the moment I'm hooked on the OYummies socks because they have an interesting texture and come in the most wonderful orange!

when i was little, and would stay at my grandma + grandpa's house for a week in the summer, they always had fresca in the basement refrigerator. i still love fresca and will buy a bunch of it when i'm feeling nostalgic (and always in the summer). you know it is now on my shopping list for this week...

I will be sure to check out France Gall...if you have not discovered her already, get Carla Bruni's CD (it's her only one, sadly). She's a modern day chanteuse and definitely her music is to be enjoyed while wearing a selection from Agent Provacateur.
;-)

Did you see how many of your paintings made it on to the Etsy poster contest winners and honorable mentions? It looked like every other poster had your painting on them.

what a great list! I just added the up series to my movie queue, it looks like something me and the mr. would both like (happens rarely, I'm making him suffer through "The Queen" this weekend). My sister in law loves A. P., she makes a beeline every time she goes to Chicago. happy weekend!
blair · August 17, 2007 at 07:46 PM
Great list indeed...just added Up series to the netflix, thanks for the tip!
Mary · August 17, 2007 at 08:50 PM
oh, this summer i have been smitten with throwing on a cute sundress and flip flops and heading out the door. easy as pie. the layering of fall/winter is much more thought consuming.

This post reminded me of something my friends dave & cleo used to do at their house. Every time they had someone over they would hand them a piece of paper and a pen and say draw things you like. They had a wall full of pages like this. So nice!
On the topic of French chaunteurs, you should check out Francoiz Breut. She also does lovely illustrations!

I really understand having to talk yourself into enjoying the season...I do it with lots of summer produce and ice cream, and sun dresses.
The UP Series breaks my heart and I sometimes think I should stop watching. I'm just not going to be able to bear the eventually degradation? I'm happy that things have turned out okay for Niel at least.
And lastly, running. I'd convinced myself that I'm just not a runner but I kept dreaming about going for long, BFG-style runs with strides big enough to hop over countries. I started with walking and now when I feel like it I'll run for a few minutes. It's gentle and going well. Good luck with your regimen!

eleni · August 18, 2007 at 06:15 AM
Lovely little note.
And you are obsessed with France Gall.
Wow.
g.,
French.
g. · August 18, 2007 at 09:32 AM
Being French it is somehow strange to read that a person your age is so fond of France Gall: she was a "yé yé" and hasn't released any album recently as she is not a composer or an author, mostly she sang songs written by great authors like Serge Gainsbourg (check his first albums!)or her husband Michel Berger both deceased now. It's good though that she isn't forgotten overseas as she is here... You might like to listen to Emily Loiseau or Olivia Ruiz... or try to listen to Tété on radioblog... Have a lovely week-end!
Caroline · August 18, 2007 at 09:39 AM
I am quite sick of our summers here, they are too humid this year and then it practically rains every weekend. I'm ready for some New England Autumn weather, my favorite! I would eat s'mores everyday if I could, but of course I love to make them over the fire, mmmmmm.
Mae Jane · August 18, 2007 at 10:20 AM
P.S. I'd still love to see a Some Girl's Wonder workout clothes edition! I think dressing to sweat is one of the most undignified challenges of the whole endeavor!
Cirilia · August 18, 2007 at 11:19 AM
love love LOVE the "up" series! we just watched "49 up" a couple of weeks ago and it was incredible! if you haven't seen it yet, make sure you watch the "extras" on the dvd. there is an **amazing** interview by roger ebert with michael apted about the series. absolutely fascinating...almost as much as the series itself!
krissy · August 18, 2007 at 11:52 AM
I still hate the summer. My curly hair hates it even more. Bring on the Fall!!
Marilyn · August 18, 2007 at 02:26 PM
I love your list =] And congrats on the running. Can you send some of your motivation my way???? =]
XOXO

i'm afraid some of your foreign readers don't know what s'mores are ... i had to look it up on google! :-) seems delicious though!

hurray for running! I started running when I was about 24, too, and at the time I couldn't even do two blocks! I kept at it, slow n steady, and ran my first five K less than a year later in about 20 minutes. It's amazing how quickly one makes progress!
But if you can, avoid running on pavement and other hard surfaces - please, please do! My right knee finally gave out last spring. No more running for me. Sad. I'm back to lower-impact exercise, but I definitely miss the effective full-body workout of a good morning run.
sarah · August 18, 2007 at 07:32 PM
Love the Up series too. (I think it is nearly time for the next one too.) Sometimes dh will mention one of the "cast" as though we actually know them. Like, "Oh that happened to Neil." "Who?" I say. "Neil from 7 Up." Oh yeah. Their lives really stick with you.
Jane · August 18, 2007 at 08:55 PM
Did you ever try the perfume of Agent Provocateur - it's my favourite! (and i also started running (with my hubby) again after six months of doing nothing - and being superslow but hei, i'm running.
I love your blog by the way :)
karlita · August 19, 2007 at 01:52 AM
oh, summer. it kicks my ass every year. it's almost spring here so we're in that inbetween stage which i really like... the days are getting longer etc. and at the end of winter i crave summer like nothing else, but then after a few weeks of 35+ degree weather in december and i'm moaning about the heat again!
AP is so the loveliest underwear. i wish i owned some!
Lindsey Clare · August 20, 2007 at 12:40 AM
I of Scandanavian origin... I tell people that my relatives were the Vikings wading through ice all the time... hence... Summer is too HOT! 3 weeks more and it's going to cool down in Utah.. I can hardly wait. I have tamed my dislike of Summer somewhat by taking up gardening and enjoying all the flowers... but still.
tiffany · August 20, 2007 at 11:01 AM
thanks for sharing about france gall. i enjoyed all of the other music recs too!
dana · August 20, 2007 at 11:35 AM
I haven't thought of that "Up" series in ages! Thanks for the reminder--perfect for my Netflix queue.

I totally wish the US had school all year round, with long weekends for holidays. I hated having to say goodbye to my friends for the summer as a child!
And my husband thanks you for the risque link. Methinks we have a new fave for underthings.
Nichole · August 20, 2007 at 03:13 PM
I've been reading you for a little bit but didn't know you were in GA til now. Hello from Decatur! It's really hot here, too!

Hello from Sock Dreams!
I'm the Shipping Dept. Manager and noticed someone had referred to you as the inspiration for their purchase, so I thought I'd drop a note of thanks! If you look on the SD journal, I'm the "model" for the men's argyles.

France Gall has a tendency to make people obsess about her. I've never been a huge fan of any one artist before, until I discovered France, and I am 26 years old.
Marlais · November 12, 2007 at 09:08 AM
hey! I have a radio show basically dedicated to France Gall and all the other yé-yé ladies. Aren't they wonderful? WSUM.org, Zut Alors, Thursdays at 7 central (only not this Thursday b/c it's Turkey time).
