The Black Apple › Inside A Black Apple

Present-Day #2

July 02, 2007

Hello, hello!
Well, in the wee hours of the morning today, (being much too lazy to cut up 200+ tiny, numbered pieces of paper) I used this handy dandy Random Number Generator to find out who got the coasters. The first number it gave me was lucky # 7, which was Sarah. Hooray for you, little lady! I'll get your present out sometime this week.

It'll go like this: Just leave a comment, saying hi, recommending a film, stating your favorite fruit, whatever you'd like. You can do this until Wednesday (so, up til' Tuesday night @ 11:59 EST). I'll draw a number, and then whoever's comment matches that number will get the present! Please make sure that your email address is with your comment, and that its correct, because I gots to email you to get your mailing address! Today's present is....

Some_girls_834

Present2_3

...a canvas hedgie family tote (the last one I have left of the original run!)

I plan to do a few more of these in the next week.
Happy Monday!

I recommend Me and You and Everyone We know. A rather bizarre but interesting film. :) Avocados are my favorite fruit.

Amanda · July 02, 2007 at 08:04 PM

I have one of those totes. I love having a tote with such cute hedge hogs.

Diana · July 02, 2007 at 08:09 PM

I feel greedy posting again, but your lovelies are too good to resist! I'm already dreaming of things to do with the coasters!

How about my favorite summer vegetable? I love cucumbers. In my town is a farmer's market (www.17thstreetfarmersmarket.com). There is a really sweet farmer lady that sells vegetables and although there are several veggie vendors, I only buy from her. She recognizes this and gives me extras from time to time. She has the best cukes and I live on them in the summer.

Cukes on top of cottage cheese with lots of black pepper, cukes in vinegar/oil with onions, cukes just as they are, in salad, on sandwiches....it is an all purpose veggie.

Love me some cukes.

hello, miss emily. i always feel like i have a perfect movie but can't remember the name. always. someday i'll find it. In the meantime, Three Seasons is lovely. A Vietnamese film that won something in Sundance, I believe. The Lives of Others, too, if you haven't seen it already.

emily · July 02, 2007 at 08:34 PM

the weatherman was a really funny movie to rent.

Hilary Glime · July 02, 2007 at 08:35 PM

don't count this one as a post (i posted above) but Prize Winner of Defiance is a very enjoyable movie. And cucumbers with cottage cheese and black pepper? That Cindy isn't lying. And Cindy, you might try this: sandwich with mayonnaise, cucumbers, sliced black olives, spinach and black pepper. It sounds strange, but it's remarkable. A remarkable sandwich.

emily · July 02, 2007 at 08:38 PM

Not quite a film, but the BBC miniseries Bleak House, based on the Charles Dickens novel of the same name was a very enjoyable watch!

And blackberries with a bit of cream and a sprinkle of sugar are quite lovely too ;)

sarah e · July 02, 2007 at 08:39 PM

We never have enough totes in our house. This one would be great for the toddlers to use at the library.

Jennifer · July 02, 2007 at 08:40 PM

Might I suggest a saucy french film called Jeux d'enfants? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364517/

It's a bizarrish little flick about the coping mechanisms that bond a pair of misfits.

kiwi · July 02, 2007 at 08:48 PM

my favirote movie.....little ms.sunshine
my favirote fruit....strawberries from our csa

Jordan · July 02, 2007 at 08:49 PM

You must see "Mostly Martha" before "No Reservations" comes out....unless you already have.

Em · July 02, 2007 at 08:49 PM

My husband & I just watched "The Fountain" & we bothed loved it!

Jenny · July 02, 2007 at 08:51 PM

Hi! I love all sorts of independent, weird and interesting movies, but my movie movie of all time will always be Life is Beautiful. I can't help it, it is such a beautiful movie!

My favorite fruit is white grapes....

:)

Kim · July 02, 2007 at 08:54 PM

I'm in love with the soft, fuzzy, juicy, ripe peaches I picked up at the farmers' market! I hold them up to my nose and, mmm... even the skin smells sweet! I made some absolutely perfect peaches and cream...

Alicia · July 02, 2007 at 08:57 PM

Oh, my very favorite romantic movie of all times is Room With A View...sigh

sadira · July 02, 2007 at 08:57 PM

Love those hedgies.

Mama Urchin · July 02, 2007 at 09:00 PM

Hi my name is Jessica and one of my favorite movies is Me, You, and Everyone we know....cherries are my favorite.

Jessica · July 02, 2007 at 09:00 PM

Just yesterday I picked up this fruit I'd never heard of before: a pluot. I'm guessing from its positioning between the plums and the apricots, it's some sort of crazy hybrid future fruit. I'm yet to try it though. It's coloring makes it look like a really nasty bruise, which is a little unappealing.

Erica · July 02, 2007 at 09:00 PM

My visits to your lovely little corner of the Internet never fail to inspire me. Many felt appliqués and bits of antique lace have wormed their way into my sewing room thanks to you, Miss Apple! I guess now is as good a time as any to let you know, and thank you for it. Oh, and my current favorite movie is Pee Wee's Big Adventure. I'm sure you've seen it, but if not, well, see it.

Maddy · July 02, 2007 at 09:01 PM

While we are on the topic of favorite movies, I'm going to have to go with Bride and Prejudice. :D

Lexi · July 02, 2007 at 09:02 PM

I recently saw "Volver" and enjoyed it quite a bit. My fave fruit if blueberries, though I'm eating an awful lot of cherries these days. Love the tote!

Heidi · July 02, 2007 at 09:02 PM

Papaya!!! Yummm! And that bag would be perfect for carrying lots of papayas! = )

Sharon · July 02, 2007 at 09:03 PM

meep meep

J · July 02, 2007 at 09:04 PM

We just watched Miss Potter and despite mixed reviews, I loved it. Who knew she was such an activist? And Ewan MacGregor? Enough said. And favoritte fruit - nothing more perfect than an orange.

Siew · July 02, 2007 at 09:04 PM

Have you ever squeezed a little bit of lime juice on watermelon slices? YUM. That is my favorite summertime snack.

nikki · July 02, 2007 at 09:05 PM

This tote is DARLING!!!! are there going to be some in your shop?!

Courtney · July 02, 2007 at 09:06 PM

This tote is DARLING!!!! are there going to be some in your shop?!

Courtney · July 02, 2007 at 09:06 PM

poo. Another Sarah got the coasters. Well, I am snacking on watermelon and limonata because the heat is unbearable. I have to second the vote for Volver (because I just purchased it today) and add that A Very Long Engagement is really lovely. You'd dig the costumes, I wager.

sarah · July 02, 2007 at 09:07 PM

It's a bit of a downer, but I really adore "Zelly and Me" with Isabella Rossellini and David Lynch - you should try and see it if you haven't already.

Abbey · July 02, 2007 at 09:11 PM

I love the hedgies! Pears are my favorite fruit, lol!

Jen · July 02, 2007 at 09:12 PM

I just saw the Jan Svankmayer film "Alice" last night. *love*. It was so strange, surreal, arty, creepy--in other words, absolutely wonderful. I'm sure you've already seen it, being the Alice in Wonderland lover yourself. But if not, do rent it...

eggmanstudios · July 02, 2007 at 09:14 PM

present present I would love a present!! :D

xoxo
Jenna Lou

ps... Your hedgies are adorable and would love lovely on my arm :D

jenna lou · July 02, 2007 at 09:15 PM

I love the Czech movie "Daisies" and the South Korean movie "Bin-jip".

i enjoy kiwis, but i'm really more a fan of vegatable, so i'm suggesting some slow roasted cauliflour, it caramelizes a bit and is just delicious.

Karina · July 02, 2007 at 09:15 PM

ooh i love summer cherries!

Jessica Hood · July 02, 2007 at 09:16 PM

Oh I love me some berries...especially if I can pick them myself! I'm an easy to pleaser. Love the little hedgies!

Marla · July 02, 2007 at 09:16 PM

Me again. Hi!

Stephanie Bates · July 02, 2007 at 09:16 PM

I love your stuff. I have some of it and one day I'll add more to it.

Martina Trout · July 02, 2007 at 09:18 PM

the best films we've seen recently have been "The Science of Sleep" (you have to have to have to see that one) and "Pan's Labyrinth". Other favorites include Mirrormask, House of Flying Daggers, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Dave · July 02, 2007 at 09:19 PM

Hi Em, I think you should see Fear Eats the Soul or M if you don't mind subtitles. I love cantoloupe, and I have four kiddies (the anything you want to add part ;) )

Wanett · July 02, 2007 at 09:25 PM

ooooh, gotta get in on this one! favourite fruti would have to be fresh pineapple. i could probably eat a whole one in a day when they're just right.

leslie · July 02, 2007 at 09:25 PM

Dear Miss Emily,
tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes, possibly the heirloom variety, sweet ripe and juicy ! And yes they are fruits, summer fruits.
As far as movies I can't get enough of watching Paper Moon. Timeless masterpiece.

Valentina · July 02, 2007 at 09:26 PM

Hi! My favorite fruit at the moment are mangoes. Mmmmm. Here in Florida we have lots! Thanks for the present days...so nice!

Susanna · July 02, 2007 at 09:28 PM

I love your hedgies! since most of my movie recommendations are pretty mainstream so I'll go with one of my favorites - peaches. My husband's secretary picks some at a nearby orchard and they are the tastiest (they have a red center) and juiciest peaches I've ever had.

stacy · July 02, 2007 at 09:29 PM

hi, just found your blog today. will be checking back often!

beth l · July 02, 2007 at 09:29 PM

Adorable. And it would look so cute filled up with my favorite fruits: mangos and plums!

Rachelle · July 02, 2007 at 09:32 PM

I love the movie Fur:An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus. its a movie about Diane Arbus the photographer but it is actually mostly made up. I am obsessed with that movie. and i love strawberries

Tegan · July 02, 2007 at 09:34 PM

The Science of Sleep is a charming movie.

emily · July 02, 2007 at 09:35 PM

"Bon Voyage" is a really swell French film.

Abigail · July 02, 2007 at 09:37 PM

A Very Long Engagement. Watched it this weekend. Amazing. :)

Oh, and try mixing equal parts of (any type)fruit-flavored yogurt and cool whip. That's a delicious fruit-dip for apple slices, strawberries, bananas....whatever! Yum!

Veronica · July 02, 2007 at 09:37 PM

Hi! I can't tell you how much I love your blog! It's the best keeps me motivated!

Lindsay · July 02, 2007 at 09:40 PM

I was going to suggest Jan Svankmajer's "Alice" which I watched this weekend, but then I saw that someone else has suggested it...
I also saw the French Film "Delicatessen" which I really loved, its very strange and creepy in a good way.

I love your blog and all your artwork!
I just bought some prints of yours at Renegade!

Chelsea · July 02, 2007 at 09:40 PM

How can I resist? It's hedgehogs! I'm simply addicted to your hedgies. :)

Seeing as how I adore your taste in the art you create and in your fantastic style... I'm curious if we might not have similar taste in movies? Mine certainly come highly recommended. :) I'm not a huge movie person though... so most of them are somewhat well known.

My top 5 are:
The Princess Bride
Titanic
Forrest Gump
Lilo and Stitch
Peter Pan (the 2005 version, non-animated)

Sarah · July 02, 2007 at 09:42 PM

Aww those Hedgies are just my favourite!
Movie to recommend: Bread and Tulips (italian- 2000) is a great film.
Favourite fruit: Mango. But my everyday favourite, the trusty banana. You can't go wrong with the banana. :0)

vera · July 02, 2007 at 09:43 PM

Kaychelle · July 02, 2007 at 09:48 PM

one of the most wonderful films i have seen is a german film titled "peas at 5:30". it was whimsical, romantic, and fun. two years ago at the philadelphia film festival it was one of the films i chose to see, and i still look on netflix to see if they have added it to their lovely and expansive bevvy of forign films. but alas, it lives on in my heart as one of my favorite films..which sadly i won't get to see again.

blake · July 02, 2007 at 09:48 PM

oh oh oh...

I reccomend the movie "Everything Is Illuminated"...you'll love it...I've seen it NO LESS than 10 times within a 2 month period ;)...Don't let Elijah Wood fool you ;) Nothing hobbitty about him in this movie...it's moving, deep, funny, FORIEGN and the music ROCKS MY SOCKS. I *Promise* you'll like it ;)

See ya' soon!

Tuesday · July 02, 2007 at 09:50 PM

I love "Amelie" and "Mary Poppins". Whimsy rules. As you know. (I'm going away for 5 weeks, so if I am the lucky winner, will you hold it for me please? Thank you!)

Kristy · July 02, 2007 at 09:53 PM

Have you tried fresh lychee fruits, Emily? Be careful of that seed. They're delicious and refreshing refrigerated during the summer.

Makayla · July 02, 2007 at 10:05 PM

"Once" was sweet.

Amanda · July 02, 2007 at 10:06 PM

Hi! Fun little contest. A film I'd recommend, hmmm, just saw Born into Brothals. It's sad but a very well done documentary. And grapefruit is a great fruit, especially late at night while watching old t.v. show re-runs.

abby · July 02, 2007 at 10:14 PM

I'm weirdly obsessed with Wimbledon. The movie, not the tennis stuff going on now. I think it's because of a small crush I have on Paul Bettany.

bkm · July 02, 2007 at 10:16 PM

I think this is a mexican thing, but I love mangos on a stick covered in lemon juice and chili powder!

Jazmin · July 02, 2007 at 10:20 PM

One of my all-time favorite movies is Patch of Blue starring one Mr. Sidney Poitier. Sigh. I love that stinkin' movie.

Watch, really! It's so good.

As for fruit...seedless watermelon with salt on it!

Taste, really! It's so good. ;)

ooh - just reading the movie titles is making me want to watch them again...I loved Mostly Martha, I too am bizarrely(sp?) obsessed with Wimbeldon (the movie) and I love Chocolat - but you must have food while watching the first and latter. And so on to my favorite fruit...hmm...I'd have to say guanabana...I know it sounds odd. I had it in Costa Rica in milkshakes- yummy!!

Amber · July 02, 2007 at 10:40 PM

Allyson V · July 02, 2007 at 11:04 PM

I just saw Miss Potter over the weekend. It was so cute. It made me want to illustrate bunnies and ducks.... I'm wondering how much is fact and how much is fiction though. I still loved it!

Joanne · July 02, 2007 at 11:06 PM

Pan's Labyrinth is a beautiful but sad and, frequently, violent film. I highly reccommend it. This time year PEACHES are my favorite fruit. Happy Monday!

Melissa

"...the eye of the passer-by who is too hasty will see only the surface. Whoever is in a hurry will not stop for me." -Pissarro

I visited the Milwaukee Art Museum today, and they're currently featuring a collection of Pissarro's paintings. I bought a shirt in the gift shop with this quote on it; it's so perfectly me and lovely and wistful.

Thanks again for being a sweetheart to your fans. :)

Christy · July 02, 2007 at 11:36 PM

You simply must watch Umbrellas of cherbourg. It's one of my favorite films. I love to curl up on the couch with some wine, brie and watch that film. Then I'll pop open a box of chocolates and indulge in Doris Day's Pillow Talk!

Audrey · July 02, 2007 at 11:40 PM

Hi. I just watched the movie "Fur" inspired by Diane Arbus' early life, and I have to say it was really great! Much better than I had expected... Very whimsical and imaginative.

I love refrigerated oranges. So yummy cold!

Jenny · July 03, 2007 at 12:57 AM

ah... my favorite movie is "the 60s"... a made-for-tv special that is quite cheesy but a quite enjoyable three hours... and I would know as I have seen it at least 25 times... no joke. It is one of those movies you can put on and run around the house while listening to the music and occasionally catching a peek at the screen and still enjoy it, plus it has julia stiles as a knocked up hippie, what could be better?!! I am even considering buying another copy just in case mine gets scratched or something... wow, I can't believe I just admitted this to all of you! carry on, happy monday!

Hi Emily,

I love your artwork. I have spent many hours agonising over which print to buy and I still haven't made up my mind.

A good movie I watched recently is "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo)". It's a subtly lovely Japanese animated film about time travel and first love.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8rRFFi_stY&feature=dir

I watched this last night. It's called Four Eyed Monsters. Its got this bittersweet loveliness to it. One of the best indie films I've seen in a while. I hope you get a chance to take a peak and perhaps like it. :)

Sea Anemone · July 03, 2007 at 01:03 AM

I always love it when you ask for movies, me being movie illiterate I come away with a new list of must sees. The tote is adorable and as I am slightly obsessed with totes in general I'd like to say, "if there's a random number generator god then please generate mine!"

Sara Berry · July 03, 2007 at 01:06 AM

Oh Happiness, where are you?

Well, you won't find it in the movie Happiness.

But it's still definitely worth seeing!

Terry · July 03, 2007 at 01:07 AM

I don't know who actually won the debate, vegetable or fruit, but I love tomatoes! Raw and with lots of salt, I can eat those unsliced like a juicy apple with its guts spilling out. Our garden is full of cherry tomatoes in the summer and I love feeling them burst in my mouth!

O tomato! How fair thou art!

Jennifer · July 03, 2007 at 01:12 AM

oh my! a hedgie tote. i'm so glad you're giving away things, what a great idea :) i love mangoes, especially the yellow ones from the philippines. i'm drooling just thinking about them.

gigegy · July 03, 2007 at 01:15 AM

My favorite movie is always the last one I watched, and in this case it was "Who the #$%^& is Jackson Pollock?" about a trucker woman's 10 year quest to authenticate a huge $5 painting she bought at a thrift store...interesting stuff! Definitely worth a Netflix.

Tessa · July 03, 2007 at 01:17 AM

I never knew how cute hedgehogs were 'til you!

MiraclesHappen · July 03, 2007 at 01:24 AM

Great Romantic Movies:
Junebug
Happy Accidents
True Romance
Mansfield Park

Here is an opportunity to let you know that I watched Grey Gardens because of your recommendation and LOVED it!! Those two women are both fascinating and heartbreaking. I hope that some of us bloggers can introduce you(and each other) to a few new movies!

rayna · July 03, 2007 at 01:30 AM

ok i'm obsessed with hedgies (not to mention your work!) so here we go....

tonight i had watermellon drizzled with olive oil topped with a little feta cheese + pine nuts. DELECTABLE!!!

cristina - string*THEORY · July 03, 2007 at 01:43 AM

Fruit is good.
My friends came up with this ice-breaker question when we first started college: "What's your melon?"

My melon is watermelon.

Cheshire Kat · July 03, 2007 at 01:49 AM

hello-
thank you so much for the lovely gift opportunity. tis much fun... jen

jen · July 03, 2007 at 01:56 AM

hello miss emily. i love your method of giving away freebies. fruit and films are excellent starting topics, hehe.
personally i am well into apples seeing as it is winter here and it's one of the few fruits that is actually good in autumn/winter. i like them baked with brown sugar and cinnamon, served with cream. yummmmmmmy.
as for films, all i can think about at the moment is Harry Potter because my husband is reading the books (he's up to #3) and we have been watching the DVDs once he finishes the book. i'm looking forward to Order of The Phoenix! are you a HP fan?

amelie ... ammelie ... amelie :)

vanessa · July 03, 2007 at 02:54 AM

eek! hedgehogs!!! Hooray!
My favorite fruit is the noble tomato, because it can be eaten as fruit or vegetable, and is a key part of the following recipe (given with apologies to those who dislike long comments and/or parenthesis)

Required Components:
-Thickly sliced tomato(organic vine ones are the best, I think)
-Two slices of bread (THICK, chewy bread)
-Salt&Pepper
-Monterey or PepperJack Cheese, sliced thickly
-mayo, if you're into that sort of thing
-the kind of mustard that has grains and horseradish in it (Dijon is superior, of course.)
Assemble in the following order (from top to bottom)
-salt and pepper
-tomato
-cheese
-mayo, if you're into that sort of thing
-delicious mustard
-bread
Then bake the whole mess in your oven until the cheese is all gooey, the bread is all toasty, and the tomatoes are all warm. It's heaven. I eat it pretty much daily... and am about to go cook one, because typing this made me crave it!

Annalise · July 03, 2007 at 02:56 AM

I like pretty much all fruits. So I'm going to say fruit salad like they make where I live (Sicily). They make a simple syrup, let it cool, then add lemon juice. Then you cut up whatever fruit is in season and let it sit in the juice. It is soooo good. Even apples are divine like this.

Emy · July 03, 2007 at 03:28 AM

Edamame Bruschetta (YUM)

2 cups peeled edamame
1 tbsp. lemon juice
8 half-slices of baguette
2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
2 tsp. sea salt
4 tbsp. freshly grated parmesan
pepper to taste

Directions:
Mash everything up. (Defrost edamame first if you're using frozen, but seriously, why do that when you can get non-frozen at Trader Joe's?)
Toast bread. Top with bruschetta.
Wolf down before guests show up.
Make another batch for guests.

P.S. I LOVE HEDGIES!!!

Elisabeth · July 03, 2007 at 03:35 AM

wow, you know how to rock and roll. how about, apple pie?

courtney · July 03, 2007 at 03:52 AM

Hmm, I love Hannah and Her Sisters, but think you'd melt if you saw The Secret Of Roan Inish. I love Selkie stories. OK, favorite fruit...watermelon...though cherries and apples are not too far behind. Again, doing this for your readers is wonderful...

Laura · July 03, 2007 at 03:59 AM

My all-time favorite movie - Moulin Rouge. I think Baz Luhrman is a genius! (And if you haven't already, check out Strictly Ballroom, the first in the "Red Curtain Series")

I watched "Last King of Scotland" last night and it was truly brilliant, brutal and powerful. I had to close my eyes a few times though!
I'm in love with pears at the moment, so sweet and juicy. They are in season here (Tasmania, Australia) and always feel like they are such a decadent fruit. Also they go very well with blue cheese.

Bec Adamczewski · July 03, 2007 at 04:53 AM

Movie recomendation today, huh? I recomend Heavenly Creatures, one of Peter Jackson's first films. It's quite disturbing especially since it's based on a true story but Kate Winslet does an amazing job in it and the clothes are fabulous! My email address is smithli21@yahoo.com.

For some reason I can never tell people my favourite films (or books or songs) and I get stressed that I really love something else more but it just hasn't popped into my head at that particular moment. Four films did pop into my head to mention here but, as they have all been mentioned in other comments already, I will save myself the stress of putting my thoughts in the public domain. I'm not sure why but I can say what my favourite fruit is without worrying that it's not really my favourite: fresh pineappple. Even though it burns my skin and leaves me with a red blotchy face, I just can't stop eating it.

Laura · July 03, 2007 at 08:25 AM

My favorite fruit is the pineapple.
I have a hard time picking movies...

Chrissie Grace · July 03, 2007 at 08:35 AM

Holy cow check out the comments! (Nothing like prizes to pull out the Lurkers, ahem)

Go see Ratatouille. Seriously.

Or if you haven't seen it, rent Pan's Labyrinth.

And eat some strawberries.

Emily · July 03, 2007 at 08:46 AM

The kiwi is a great fruit. I like to just scoop them out with a spoon. They are also decorated on the inside (looks like a print when you cut them open). A bonus is they're good for you and taste pretty good, too.

I'm sure you've seen it, but on the off-chance no? Well, Dangerous Liaisons is the perfect way to spend a snow-day, or a particularly humid & crummy, Sunday, summer afternoon. Oft-remade with mixed results, I must insist on the 1988 Malkovich/Close version of this classic French story. More mainstream than my taste in film usually runs, but oh, the rewards. The sweet, nasty rewards...

karaalison · July 03, 2007 at 09:13 AM

The World of Henry Orient. Peter Sellers, Paula Prentiss.

Just saw Music & Lyrics. Acting was kind of lame, but the script contained some good banter.

But if you can sit through it the first time, showing it to someone else gets pretty funny for you. My favorite fruit would have to be fresh blueberries. Mmmm. But I really do love them all. I just feel even healthier with blueberries because of all the great antioxidants.

Hi Emily,

I think you are so generous and gifted. And I thought since you're giving some of "yourself" away; we maybe should too... So I thought an easy way of doing that would be to give you one of my favourite recipes:) It's a French family recipe for Pear and Grape Jam and I hope you will like it (as well as any commentators here). It is a really special jam which looks pretty and pink when done, the flavour is nuanced (as in "nicety"; a subtle quality) and delicate. Enjoy!

Grape and Pear Jam

Makes 5 jars of about 350g
• 2 kg ripe but firm pears
• 1,5 kg red grapes
• Juice from one lemon
• 1 kg sugar + same weight as “grape juice”

Peel the pears and cut into squares. Put in a bowl with 1 kg vegan sugar. Let marinate 2-3 hours until the sugar has dissolved.
Wash the grapes and remove from stem. Put the grapes in a casserole and make them burst on high heat. Press the juice out of the grapes and filter.
Weigh the grape juice and put it, together with the same weight of sugar and the lemon juice in a casserole. Cook until the mixture turns “syrupy”. Add the pears and bring to a boil.
Cook for 30 min while stirring and skimming the jam.
Put in sterilized jars.

Enjoy on baguettes (just remember to butter your bread first;).

I just saw Ghostrider. I only recommend it if you're not too picky, or like comic-based movies (my hubby hates them all across the board), or are easily amused. I liked it, but I wasn't expecting much going into it, so I was sort of pleasantly surprised. I also kinda tuned out Eva Mendes, but thoroughly enjoyed Peter Fonda, especially his campy hair.

Enjoy the beautiful summer :o)

I watched a pretty good movie this weekend called "I'll Cry Tomorrow," it was the story of Lillian Gish. Suan Hayward was the star - she's always good.

My favorite fruit is the blood orange. I don't know if it's so much because I like them, or because they're only out at certain times during the year.

chantal · July 03, 2007 at 12:32 PM

I'd recommend The Dreamers, It's a bit weird but a bit lovely at the same time!

Sophie · July 03, 2007 at 12:57 PM

Hello Miss. Emily,

The film I would like to reccomend to you is Nacho Libre starring the AMAZING Jack Black. Yes, I went there I reccomended a film which contains plenty of farting but trust me it is filled with so many discreet sprinkles of HALARIOUSNESS (I don't know if that is a word)that it makes the film brilliant which by the way is directed by the same director of Napolean Dynomite.

Mango.

You might enjoy "All about Lily Chou-Chou". New favorite summer snack: iced peach white tea and cherries. :D

Violet · July 03, 2007 at 02:25 PM

I was just about to recommend "Wings of Desire", when I saw that someone else got to it first, AND someone else commented about the movie. I guess you really need to see it! I don't know if they've already been mentioned, but I'll recommend "Punch-Drunk Love" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"
Black raspberries are delicious right now, as are ranier cherries. I just made yummy jams - strawberry, cherry, and blueberry. Mmmm.

Melissa · July 03, 2007 at 02:25 PM

I'm loving the wild blackberries surrounding my house... and as for a film, I'd recommend Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind... I loved that movie so much

Liz · July 03, 2007 at 03:19 PM

This is me saying hola chica, recommending "Stranger Than Fiction", and confessing my undying love for zucchini (which is technically a fruit. And if that doesn't count in your book and in fear of being disqualified due to our differences, then I declare mango as my fruit of choice.) *B

Hello Emily,
All of your things are quite lovely, and I do admire the things that come to your mind! Strawberries are my favorite fruit (and are in abundance here in Southern California), and for a movie I would recommend- I suppose I would add Brick or perhaps Return to Me. Sometimes I watch Return to Me just to imagine myself in the middle of Minnie Driver's beautiful garden. Happy 4th of July!

Veronica · July 03, 2007 at 04:26 PM

Hello!

I recommend this lovely film: Paperhouse. Here's the imdb blurb about it: "Anna is becoming lost in the loneliness of her own world when she discovers she can visit another, a house she has drawn herself and occupied by a young disabled boy. But as she discovers more of the links between her fantasy world and the mundane present, she is drawn only deeper into a dream turning into a nightmare."

"Ponette" is lovely as well.

Oh, and "While the Cat's Away," is quite good, too.

Fussbunny · July 03, 2007 at 04:31 PM

ok...
so i feel guilty of course posting for the first time because of the give-away, BUT when hedgehogs are concerned it is totally worth it! you see... they are my favorite animal. i even had one as a guest at our wedding :) I have to say, you have my favorite etsy shop & I can't wait to see the prints that I ordered last week! keep up the amazing work!

sarah · July 03, 2007 at 04:33 PM

These comments just reinforce why I love your blog -- because so many people have listed so many of my top ten favorite movies (bravo to all the Delicatessen lovers!) and so many others have made good recommendations that I will run, not walk, to the Netflix queue and add stuff to watch. Oh boy. There's just not enough time in the world.

As for my own recommendations? Uh, so many. How about two about novelists? "Stranger Than Fiction" was very good, way better than I expected, and I didn't see "Sex and Lucia" anywhere on here. That's an excellent Spanish movie about a novelist coming to terms with his own life, told from his girlfriend's perspective.

Alison Whittington · July 03, 2007 at 04:42 PM

what an adorable tote! so cute. my favorite movie is 'Little Miss Sunshine' but 'Sweet homr Alabama' is a cool chick flick. my favorite fruit is pineapple. although I don't like it as much as before I got pregnant. still yummy though

brittanie · July 03, 2007 at 05:00 PM

Clementines! I just picked up my first batch for the year yesterday.
And I'll second (or third or fourth...) whoever recommended any Wes Anderson movies!

Raspberries. And "Grease." I'd love a hedgie bag! Thanks for the fun contest.

Sara · July 03, 2007 at 05:23 PM

Just too sweet of you to do all of these give-aways! I'll enter again! Oh, my very favorite fruit are apricots, and well, I haven't seen any great movies lately. My favorite old-timey movie is The Apartment...(but I'm sure you've already seen it.)

A fantastically twisted movie is Dot the I. Very good.

We are a peach loving family here in Portland.

Angels and Insects is one of my favorites. and yes, like everyone else, I love your adorable hedgehogs.

Rachel · July 03, 2007 at 07:29 PM

Miss Emily, for you I ABSOLUTELY suggest the "Umbrellas of Cherbourg". The style is impeccable, and the color, nuance and subject is heart wrenching. I hope even tho I am around #330, you still read this and see the film. My favorite fruit might be boring, but it's the Watermelon. And boy howdy am I eating a lot of it right now!! I don't like it when it is mealy, ick. But the best days ever end with a watermelon seed spitting fight while sitting on the front porch. And by the way, I get some hard earned money next week, and I'm gonna walk my booty across the street from where I work in Portland and spend some of it in Seaplane. I'll keep you posted.

cheriwan · July 03, 2007 at 07:31 PM

i'm crazy about odd fruits. like dragonfruits, which are bright pink and spiky, and durians, which smell absolutely disgusting, and gooseberries, which are like armoured grapes.

something else i'm crazy about is your blog, since i'm never fast enough to snag the things i love from your etsy shop, and seeing them photographed ever so nicely on your blog is a close second. and no, i'm not just flattering you in the hopes that it'll give me good karma and help me win that bag. although if it does, that's good too, but i just thought i might as well, since i'm delurking anyway.

rachel · July 03, 2007 at 07:54 PM

Me me me! I definitely recommend Sicko. I LOVE your stuff!

Tasha · July 03, 2007 at 07:58 PM

the tales of beatrix potter as danced by the royal ballet. in the opening scenes a hedgie is doing her laundry and you will swear your childhhood dream of being shrunk down and invited to see the domestic yet mysterious lives of timid forest creatures has come true:)

plums are my favorite fruit!

hey emily, i always look and never order. but i just bought a house and would love to have a print or two (or three)...unfortunately the adorable fruit girls wouldn't go in my coffee kitchen. do you think you would ever paint a lovely girl that also somehow involves coffee?? the book girl is one of my faves. thanks so much!

blake · July 03, 2007 at 08:22 PM

Favourite fruit would have to be dragonfruit.

Favourite movie is Labyrinth although I twitch a little upon saying this because LOTR is a fantastic movie.

Weirdest thing I saw today. A woman walking two dogs and pushing a pram. In the pram was a pug. Perhaps his legs were to little to keep up with the other two.

Cheers

:)

Adorable little hedgie tote bag!

Okay, here's my film recommendation: The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover.

It's a little on the odd side, and has a few disturbing scenes so be warned. That said it's a beautiful film. Lots of great colors. And the clothing changes colors when the actors walk from one part of the restaurant to another. Oh, and Jean-Paul Gaultier did the costumes. Released in 1990 in the USA, but a French film.

Whale Rider is a really good movie. Okay, so maybe I had a dad like her grandpa, and okay, maybe he really did want a boy--but regardless of whether you can relate or not, it's a good movie!

And dried mango is very, very good!

Wowee Emily! The chances are not good but I am not playing thinking I will win! What, no more haiku requests? Movies and fruit are so easy. Let's see...that Tilda Swinton movie Orlando is a good one. Mango, maybe.

Check out Two Hands (with a young(er) Heath Ledger.
Also, my favourite film of all time: Running on Empty.

I hope I win, I love those hedgies, especially the ones in berets!

Cirilia · July 03, 2007 at 11:23 PM

Oh wow look at this! So many great movie suggestions. Here's a great old black and white flick for you - Sullivan's Travels. The main character in it dreams of making a movie called "O Brother Where Art Thou", so it's kind of fun to see where that came from. And you have to love Veronica Lake calling Joel McRea a "big fathead" and pushing him in the pool.

For a tv series, I loved House of Eliot.

Just got my hedgie t-shirt in the mail from you today and I love it!

Ok, so I'm a horrible person for only commenting when presents were involved but, Hi! I'm Lauren. I'm a craft blog reader and attempter of many crafts (though I'm not so great at it. Ah, well, I'm working on it).

I love your blog, your artwork is always so cute. I'm just far too lazy to ever comment the many blogs I read.

Lauren · July 04, 2007 at 04:42 AM

sheri leseberg · July 04, 2007 at 05:29 AM

Shouldn't be missed.. Baz Lurhmans version of 'Romeo & Juliet' if the story doesn't appeal, the costumes most certainly will! Thanks for keeping such a inspirational blog!

Tote bags = awesome.

Shortbus = awesomest movie.

Pears = most consistently awesome fruit.

Jess · July 04, 2007 at 05:28 PM

I can HIGHLY recommend Brief Encounter. It's an old black and white with Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson. It's very English and has to be watched in front of a log fire with a big pot of tea and a slab of your favourite chocolate.

Alison · July 04, 2007 at 06:34 PM

I've recently bought your cameo pin and very looking forward to put it on my favourite dress!
I also hope to win this cute tote bag..
My favourite film is any Indian bollywood films! I know they are made as films but they look so happy when they are dancing and singing which always makes me smile!

My favourite fruit is mango. They melt my brain..

maki · July 04, 2007 at 06:59 PM

i'm trying not to overcomment, but i just saw that someone recommended perfume-the story af a murderer. i was wondering if that person read the book/knew there was a book. the book was quite disturbing, and i have the movie at the top of my netflix list! can't wait til it is sent out!

The HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy is hilarious! I LOVE green apples

becky · July 04, 2007 at 11:44 PM

persimmon. also a favourite word, but the fruit is delicious in it's own right. and pretty all orange and shiny hanging on a bare tree- actually I may be slightly in love.

Meryl · July 05, 2007 at 05:14 AM

My favourite films are those by Wes Anderson. Though I still haven't seen Bottlerocket. Every time I feel tired and sad I was The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. I wish Steve Zissou was my dad. I'd like to live in a subrmarine with a library and an editing suite and a sauna.

Clare · July 05, 2007 at 07:44 AM

Berkshire County in Massachusetts is beautiful this time of year.

Favorite fruits: Mangos and pomegranates

Guilty Pleasure: Buttons (I'm a jewelry artist)

I love your blog!

Stephanita · July 05, 2007 at 02:19 PM

Chocolate ice cream is my favorite fruit. Oh. Okay. Cake, then. The five-pound mangos they grow here in West Africa are right up there too.

I rarely get to choose the movies lately, but of the movies that I have been forced to overhear ad nauseum, I have to say I never get sick of Annie, the 80's version, or Mary Poppins, and I think that says a lot for a movie, if you still like it after seeing it a million times. I really love the movie Dr. Zhivago, but I don't know if can pass that test.
