Perhaps I dream too much alone

I finally watched my Netflixed Beales of Grey Gardens, after having it for weeks, and oh my.
Oh my, oh my, oh my. Anyone who is a fan of the original will just die over all this extra-Edie footage, but it also rounds the old gals out a bit more. This new film (which can be purchased alone or with the original in a slipcase set from Criterion for only a bit more than the original alone) is much...sunnier. Which some fans of the original may not really love, but I did. The Maysle that is still living introduced the film by saying "Edie's only problem with the film (Grey Gardens) was that there wasn't enough dancing". Even though there is loads of Edie's dancing and antics in the original, the new one has even more little dance numbers.
And...wait for it...

A outfit/"costume" montage. That's correct...tons of little Edies waltzing across the screen in different get-ups, some of which have never been seen before. Said montage is set to a beautiful and sad song (the title of the post is extracted from the song) that is totally appropriate for our lil' E, and made me so very happy. There is also more of the outdoors, more of the elusive "marble fawn", and more whimsical but strangely lucid philosophy from little Edie. I am all over the Criterion set, as it is very affordable, and this companion film totally clinched my pre-existing love for the ladies Beale.

Concerning best-costumes-for-the-day, I really liked one of my own from last week:

Non

There were so many pretty details, especially with that sheer, embroidered sweater. The "no" necklace is currently my favorite piece of jewelry. We've had such crack-pot crazy weather here lately (almost 90 one day, and then 50 the next) I've been dressing in light, but versatile layers. Hey, and even though it happened a day or two before, perhaps this little outfit is a bit of a nod to Alicia's fashion post from last week?
Oui, oui.

Oh...your sweater is so,so lovely! Where ever did you find it?? And now I have something new and exciting to add to our Netflix que...I remember seeing some snippet somewhere about this film and thinking.."ooh, that looks good!" Thanks for reminding my cluttered brain about it! : )

I recently watched both of the Grey Gardens films and am totally fascinated by big and little Edie. My favorite scene is when Edie is redecorating the upstairs room and when she can't get the pushpin into the wall she says, "I have the saddest life." Love it!

how ironic. I just watched grey gardens for the first time today (although it has been on my blockbuster list since Edie was a child). It was spellbinding.

I can't wait to watch the extra Edie footage! I just watched Grey Gardens for the first time last fall and fell in love with it. Aren't they supposed to be making a fictional account starring Drew Barrymore or something?

I used to wish I was one of the edies, I really did, all crazy and funny clothes related to the Kennedy's and living on an odd apartment.

Dancing, Dancing, dancing...wait, I do still wish I was one of them, never mind.

stilettoheights · April 02, 2007 at 07:43 AM

That is indeed a gorgeous outfit!

I recently watched Grey Gardens with my husband. I am completely facinated by little Edie, her life, her dancing and her fashion sense. My husband interview Maysle in his Harlem office about a month ago as part of his documentary book and dvd. I will send you a link to both when they come out in the fall.

Great outfit Emily! It's barely 60 in NYC today. Cloudy and foggy.

You! I want to dress like you!

odd dotty · April 02, 2007 at 03:34 PM

Emma · April 02, 2007 at 05:59 PM

Hello Emily,
We are on a temperature whirlwind here too...The end of the show was horrid yesterday, as it was above 90.

I must watch this, how have I not???! What a great idea while I am decompressing, netflix order. Also, Thank you for a view of you! Makes it all a bit more real when we get a peek...You are lovely, and I adore the necklace.. I would like one myself...Covetting yours from afar.

ps: I need some shoe help...

Vanessa · April 02, 2007 at 08:40 PM

Don't we all want to escape to Little Edie's world sometimes...such happiness...

My mom and I are now big fans of the gals thanks for the great recommendation.

julie · April 04, 2007 at 10:30 AM

Such a cute outfit. I love the skirt...

Hanna · April 09, 2007 at 01:00 AM

Oh my gosh! I googled the song lyrics to "I Dream Too Much" because I too just got done watching my Netflixed "TBOGG" and found your site... and I love it! And I've already made my first purchase.

The Beales keep creating magic!

Amy · July 10, 2007 at 10:54 PM

is that a dress, or two pieces? i need to get more shoes like you!

jen · October 20, 2007 at 11:48 AM

I just had the privilege of seeing this film at the Detroit Docs Intl. Film Festival last weekend--the day after a showing of Grey Gardens (with Albert Maysles in attendance for Q&A!) I was simply blown away by both the Little Edie montage and the Jerome Kern/Dorothy Fields song (which I never heard/heard of before). Mr. Maysles asserted that both Edies lived their lives on their own terms and the films are testament to that. Agreed!

I love, love, love the "Non" necklace !!! Where did you get it ???
