PS: You might've heard of this recent art swipery situation, but it is really interesting and infuriating. I sometimes get creeped out that something like this will happen to me (my friend Kate says that I'll be sorry I bought so many pillows and rugs from Urban Outfitters when they are paying tiny Mongolian children to reproduce my artwork). Then I comfort myself with the notion that I am not hip enough for any of these losers to want to swipe from me, and I feel better.

"I will take care of you" is so beautiful! Your work is really fabulous! Happy Saturday!

Lovely Emily,
I have been up all night doing the artist thing. I am so delighted that you expressed the idea of doing exactly what you love. I love that feeling...it usually happens alone, late night, in the studio, fave music, silence outside...And then I am on the wave!

Your work is stunning stunning amazing. xxo,Vanessa

It chills me to the bone (the swipery, not the new paintings) Hot Topic was recently carrying a very very similar ninja t-shirt to one of my designs. I actually had people congratulate me when their shirt appeared in an episode of Ace of Cakes. It was just different enough that I didn't have a case.
This goldman thing just makes me sick.

Here is a nice page full of examples of his stolen pieces. Some of them are exact copies of other's work ~ how can he think that is ok?

You might not need to worry about big businesses, but there are plenty of artists that copy work without a thought. They either don't understand, or don't care about copyright laws, which every artist should make a point to learn about.

I had someone selling exact replicas of one of my bag designs that had a landscape applique on it. I was even angrier because my pieces are all one-of-a-kind, I don't even make duplicates!

She said someone had brought in pictures of my bag and wanted to custom order one just like it. Normally people just bring her a picture of the applique they want, but she is always happy to make them whatever they want. I said, you have to realize, every time they bring you an image, unless they drew it themselves, you are breaking copyright laws. I don't think she got the point, but at least she removed my bags from her site.

*sigh* your wallpaper painting has been haunting me all day...I haven't been able to get it out of mind!

your new paintings are wonderful! As far as the artist swiping issues along with big business swiping issues, i feel torn and slightly cynical. I worked at neighborhoodies as an intern and was told to come up with a ready to wear concept ("animal farm")for children that they could produce in house, i was paid 15$ a day and promised 5 percent of every shirt sold. They still sell them and ive yet to get paid and its been two years. I think your art work would be hard to steal because it is unique and original...its not over saturated in mono and duo tone outlines of random objects, if someone did copy you it would be obvious. I don't know how thin the "inspired by" line is. I'm sure that another artist who does imaginative portraits of girls would not call you a "swiper" and vice versa. My issue (and I take ownership for being wrong on this one) is that when people are copying the current trends and styles and one person does a bike outline graphical drawing and then someone else comes along and puts a new spin on it (IE: duo tone bike graphic, etc.)...I have a hard time buying into the thought that these unoriginal original ideas are being "swiped" in the first place. Perhaps, my attitude is wrong on the subject, i'm not totally sure. I feel like the art world is running into a bit of a recycling system...such as: original creations catch on and becomes the "style" of the moment, urban outfitters and the like steal the ideas, and then other artists put another spin on the whole thing IE (again):collages, birds, deer, flora fawna, outlines, mono and duo tone graphics, silhouettes of people and random objects. Call me crazy, but if I made art that reflected current trends and it wasn't all that unique I'd have a hard time saying it was swiped if I saw someone else doing a different version of it. However, I do know this happens first hand with artists and retail chains in obvious ways. Ok, this is gotten way too long, but again love the new paintings and your imagination.

"I will take Care of You" is stunning. One of your best!

Wendy Allegree · April 14, 2007 at 08:56 PM

If you look at trends + where companies like Urban Outfitters, The Gap, Target, etc. are getting their ideas from (look at all the mass produced stuff that looks "handcrafted" + DIY) it might be wise to look into what you need to do to protect your original work. Being that you are a top seller on Etsy + have an immensely popular blog it might be wise to take precautions.
You can call me paranoid.

shona · April 14, 2007 at 09:01 PM

I'd be paranoid too if I were you, just because I hear about more of this thing happening all the time. Maybe exposing it like this is the key. ("I'm telling!") I wish I didn't have to feel guilty about all the U. Outfitters stuff I buy, they tempt me so.

I am in love with seeing some original paintings from you, such lovelies. Promise me one day I can commission you to do a painting of me, or Emma in your applet way. One day, pretty please??

oh god what have i missed!
you have been so industrious these last two posts.....i think im in love all of them, particularly 'the pensive wallpaper' (can you beat that title, madam?), and 'lupine' leaves me totally speechless!

art swipes... nothing surprises me, but it does make the flesh crawl, that i do admit.

lou · April 15, 2007 at 09:17 AM

this happened to me with TOPSHOP!!!

they made a tote bag with my owl on it...an EXACT copy!

unfortunately it is so expensive to pursue legal action with international laws...that i just had to let it slide...Aaaarrgghhh!!!

i haven't bought anything from UO since the whole johnny cupcake t shirt thievery.

Yay, Whiskeytown!

I'm late with this reply, but I just had to mention that while young adorable girls in differing situations isn't exactly one persons own sole idea, I have stumbled upon other people's work on etsy and thought "I bet they have black apple on their favoured artists list" because there work seems a little TOO similar to yours.
Granted there are plenty of other people doing adorable art of young people, including myself, that have a different enough style you can see it's made their own.
I hope that makes sense, sorry I rambled.
