For the past week, I've been working on some 3D sculpture-versions of my girls & creatures...I suppose it was spawned by all the needle felting that has been going on in my studio.
Here are two little cuties, the one on the left is a combo of painted Sculpey, needle-felting, and fabric. The little chubster on the right is entirely painted Sculpey:
"Dunce Girl" 3"x7" & "Little Cat Girl" 3.5"x11"
This sculpture is a larger one, with a giant (13" long, so it's relative!) needle felted deer and a sculpey/fabric passenger:

"Little Brown Fawn Rider", 13"x8"
These pieces will be part of the next shop update next week!
I'm really loving this.
I'm doing much better with these 3 dimensional figures than the screen printing mishap I detailed to you yesterday. Thank you for all of the pointers and thoughtful messages about printing, by the way! I am considering a gocco, but I'm a little bit afraid because it is (supposedly) a dying system (meaning, I'm afraid I won't be able to get supplies soon).
Thoughts?
In addition to the originals-update next week, I'm going to be stocking up the shop soon with some new hedgie totes, a brand-spankin'-new pin pack, and some limited run posters. Posters! I'll keep you updated on all that stuff as it arrives, as well as when the update will be.
Happy Sunday, my dears!

Just adorable! I want them all too... great thinking...
LuLu · March 18, 2007 at 06:25 PM
Emily!
They're amazing! You have changed my entire concept of what sculpey can be! And you've more than made up for your screen-printing mishap. If you ask me, you should definitely get a Gocco... Really, burning screens is so tidy and easy with the gocco! I promise! Do it. Now. xoxo

Wow, I am so impressed by these. It really is something seeing your characters in 3D.
Kate · March 18, 2007 at 06:46 PM
*squee* I've been so looking forward to seeing what you've been working on. You didn't dissapoint at all, adorable my dear, perfectly adorable :)
ysolda · March 18, 2007 at 06:46 PM
Wow what a lil sculpter you are!! SOO cute. On the gocco tip it is supposedly a dying thing but there is a whole group of people on a mission to save it ( savegocco.com ) and every now and then there rumors of big companies buying it to keep it alive. So far its still alive for the most part and you can get supplies pretty easily. Im a part of the Gocco group on flickr and theres lots of info on there. Hope this helps. I do love my Gocco.
eleni · March 18, 2007 at 06:52 PM
How classic! Those are fantastic. Surpassed my wildest expectations of what will be in the next shop update!!!

oh my goodness, emily! You HAVE made them come right to life! I adore them. Beautiful, inspired work. ;)
amanda · March 18, 2007 at 07:11 PM
Ack! Ackackack! How can you bring yourself to sell them? How did you get 3D to be so exactly like your 2D?
funny laurie · March 18, 2007 at 07:28 PM
These are very adorable! I think they made the transfer well from 2D to 3D characters.
Good job!
Jennifer · March 18, 2007 at 07:38 PM
Emily, those truly are amazing. Have you ever had your own show? I truly think it is time you set yourself up in an art gallery somewhere so that people could see the range of your work together. If I had an art gallery (which I don't) or lived near you (also, which I don't) I would try to help you with this. I think it would be an amazing visual to see your dolls, paintings, sculptures etc all together in a showcase.
melanie · March 18, 2007 at 07:42 PM
I was wondering what sort of paints can be used on sculpey. I'm just starting to play with it myself and have found that it's an amazing medium.
Smirkle · March 18, 2007 at 07:54 PM
I would avoid Gocco ~ for one thing, I don't know what the prices are, but I would avoid most things where you have to buy their specific supplies to use the product.
It is usually a waste of money. If I buy an actual screenprinting screen, it's $20. If I make my own, it's probably $5.
With smaller screens (like Gocco) it might be worth a little extra money, but you are also limited to that one size. Not to mention we have no idea how long they will be making supplies for it (now that they are not making the Gocco anymore).
Tiffany Harvey · March 18, 2007 at 08:00 PM
I honestly believe these pieces are your best work yet. The precision you achieve in the 3D is so delicious, and some how the cute/eerie combo that characterizes your work is amped up even higher--it's like the figures escaped the paintings. LOVE THESE!
Melissa Crowe · March 18, 2007 at 08:06 PM
you are a mastermind. I experimented with sculpey last year and it was a disaster and i hate it. But your stuff looks so wonderful! I am a proud friend.

It seems as though your work has been building up to this moment of utter perfection. I love the dressed sculpture, absolutely beautiful.
sarah · March 19, 2007 at 12:45 PM
I just read your last post this morning. If you are looking for a way to make a few patches etc.. have you tried freezer paper? It is very easy and fun. It is not something you can do a mass production of, but it might be fun for some patches etc... And it is CHEAP.
Also, I love the figures, they are really very good.
KellyA · March 19, 2007 at 01:02 PM
I agree that these sweet creatures should take over the world! They are so exquisite! Definitely my favorite thing so far! I also agree with diane, it is good that you didn't master screenprinting too easily, it would be too much for the rest of us to bear!
michelle · March 19, 2007 at 01:14 PM
I love them!!! They're simply wonderful, I'm sure they'll sell out super quick.
Marilyn · March 19, 2007 at 01:51 PM
oh my god emily,
these are amazing. i mean really. it is interesting too - i just had my first sculpey experience this weekend. I am making little bird charms for work(i am now also designing jewellry in addition to my job here!) I made little bird charms and painted them. I kind of liked it, the sculpey!
also on a side note, i know you are an alice in wonderland fan, did you ever see the one made-for-tv version from 1985 with all the celebs. . like ringo star for the mock turtle, carol channing, red buttons, etc. with the jaberwocky? I have been obsessed with finding that version on video for literally 10 years. Well i just found out that it was released 8-2006 and you can get it on netflix - it is on the top of my queue. in my opinion, it is the best alice version ever!

Your little cat girl is very sweet. Great combo of media to make a little figurine from your paintings.
Tami · March 19, 2007 at 03:17 PM
Excuse me, lady: is there something that you can´t do? Some form of art that you are not gifted for? Some craft that you undertake and won´t come out preternaturally well-made? I declare that i am deep green with envy! Mostly because i am a procrastinator and you seem to be always working in something new.
From here my most deep, sincere, admiration. Go, lady!
chicadecanela · March 19, 2007 at 03:26 PM
Beautiful, glossy Sculpey action! One of these days I might even make it in time to one of your shop updates before everything is snatched up. :)
And, related to Janelle's post, being a fan of Alice myself I wondered what your feelings were for the Wizard of Oz (another favorite)? Maybe I haven't been reading your blog long enough to know, but have you ever seen Return to Oz?!
Tanya · March 19, 2007 at 03:27 PM
Delightful. I have to say, I understand your frustration around screen printing. Having experimented with crochet & beading (I was primarily a knitter), I knew to expect a degree of trial & error and frustration when I started sewing as a complete & utter newbie. Unlike knitting, but similar to beading, I found myself really getting the hang of it rather quickly. Could be my enthusiasm, though :)
ambika · March 19, 2007 at 03:45 PM
These sculptures are so exciting! Wonderful work. They're very intriguing. They have a great dreamy quality to them.

Everything is so cute!!
About the Gocco - I have one and I really like it. The supplies are getting a bit harder to find but sometimes you get lucky (I found some of the inks for really cheap at an art supply store when I was back in CT over Christmas).
chantal · March 19, 2007 at 04:31 PM

Gocco is fun and easy. I definately have a "scarcity complex" and it makes me hesistant to try new things on Gocco. The supplies are expensive, as well as scarce. But, if you've got a design you love and a use for lots of prints (up to 80 cards!), there is no better way to go.
Supplies and machines are still made in Japan, I think.
Cute, cute sculptures!!! I love the shiny paint!
Alison · March 20, 2007 at 06:30 PM
wow these are so great. and shiny. I can't believe what amazingly cute you can make with a lump of sculpy!
