So, my little partner-in-crime Ashley informed me that I should share 6 weird things about myself. As with everyone else that has completed this task, there are scores of oddities lurking in my everyday ways, but here are six that happen to apply today:
- I have an irrational love for UPS men. It isn't a fetishy thing, I just tend to find whichever UPS man is mine at the time very endearing...Very. You might remember my one from my old Athens house, who bore more than a passing resemblance to John Doe. Actually, now that I'm thinking about it...the reason I love them so much is probably as simple as the fact that they bring me nice things. Things that I have ordered, usually, but still. They bring me things.
- Broccoli has been one of my top 5 favorite foods since I was a baby. It isn't that weird, except for the degree to which I love broccoli. The legend goes that when I was 3, my mom told me that I could have any food I wanted for my birthday party...apparently all that I wanted was broccoli. Just broccoli. I mean, I'm assuming their was cake, but I don't really know. And then I wonder why I wasn't a more popular child...
- At the moment, I really don't want to listen to any music made after 1940. Except for X's Under The Big Black Sun. And Liz McGrath's band, Miss Derringer. And that is Ms. McGrath's weirdo-guy pictured at the top of this post.
- I would rather have beautiful clothes than anything else material in the world. I know that's not a shock, but really...more than a nice car (as evidenced by the one that I drive). It is definitely an obsession, as I recently had to get a chest of drawers specifically to house/organize all of my knee socks and stockings. I comfort myself by thinking about Howard Hughes, and what a long way I've got to go til' I officially check into Level 5 Eccentric-ville.
- I have always entertained a fantasy of being an auto-mechanic. No, Really. I would have the sassiest little jumpsuits, too...
- I am inexplicably saddened by the situation between Dita Von Teese & her former husband. I'm sure she's better off, but still...I always really want the marriages of two eccentrics to work.
Okay, I'm going to join the land of the outside world after packing and shipping over 100 orders in the last 2 days, so you might not hear from me for a day or two. When I return, however, I've got some great picture books to share. I think next week should be book week, yes? Yes.
See you then + Happy Weekend, chickadees!

Oh , Oh my....Are you going to be a happy girl!!!!! I wish I was there when the teeny tiny treasure arrives, see bribery prompted you... I have a peek for you.. come see... and 100 send outs?? Wow!!! I love your 6 things. Broccoli is good. Sometimes I crave it and need it. Like just last Thursday. At least you will be fine when you enter your much much later years and you must have softer food. Broccoli will work if it is cooked very well, even liquified, cream of broccoli is very very good, I am serious!! hee hee.

Ah, no. 4 definitely applies to me as evidenced by the fact that I don't own a car and have to struggle to make myself realize that their are lovely and beautiful housewares out there, too.
ambika · January 27, 2007 at 04:23 PM
#4 explains why you are always wearing the most adorable and delightful outfits. ;) I have to say I too am on my way to prefering clothes over just about anything else! :)
Have a lovely weekend too! :)

My girl! There's a family legend about how I was crying in the grocery cart because Mom wouldn't buy broccoli. I can never understand it when someone talks about how much they hate it. It's all I can do not to turn into one of those people that say "You can't mean it. You just haven't tried it the right way!" I'm pretty sure they mean it (and also haven't tried it the right way -heehee.)
Have fun this weekend!

My kids both adore broccoli! Hooray! My favorite way to cook it is to roast it with some slivered garlic and sea salt and a touch of olive oil. So simple but soo tasty.
Merrill · January 27, 2007 at 05:30 PM
Aah I am a broccoli fan too! Infact my 3 favourite foods are broccoli, cucumber and peas (what's with the green!) oh and cake, I can't get enough cake. I too am sad about Dita and her ex, really thought that one might have lasted......
Gillian · January 27, 2007 at 05:31 PM
i love broccoli too. although i clearly don't like it as much as you, as i spelled it incorrectly last night suring a heated game of girls vs. boys cranium. you'll be happy to know the girls prevailed in the end despite my dropping a "c."
risa · January 27, 2007 at 05:45 PM
A bit of a lurker, I am, and am prompted to come out of hiding to say -- I share your #6! Strange, because I didn't like them much when they were together, but now I feel quite sympathetic towards Dita and was rather briefly sad about the rift.
I always enjoy your lovely blog. That is all.

Have you heard of The Scarring Party? They are a pretty fantastical mix of banjos, saloon smoke and the Depression. Snazzy!

my current UPS driver just beeps his horn and expects me to carry the sometimes very large and heavy boxes off the truck myself, as he has "a bad back" and he mocks me for being a woman in heels carrying a big heavy box of comics...
I envy your love of ups men...

They sell some paintings by Elizabeth McGrath at a little store in Austin, Texas called Monkey See Monkey Do. They have a website, but it's not properly open yet.
I agree about the seperating of Dita Von Teese (so captivating) and her former husband. Under the circumstances they seperated (he cheated on her, I believe) I'm glad you didn't mention his name.
Apart from good music, my like for X stems from Viggo Mortensen being formally married to Exene Cervenka....mmmmmm aragorn.
Nicole · January 27, 2007 at 10:11 PM
P.S. When I said I agree about Dita Von Teese, I meant I agree with you, not that I agree with the seperation. Their 3 day wedding was so fanciful and extravegant, I really had hoped they would work out.
I had to correct my self because I'm anal like that.
Nicole · January 27, 2007 at 10:16 PM
I <3 the UPS men as well!! I think it's because they wear jaunty shorts, and in the warm months they drive around with no doors--so we can oogle them. I also know that UPS pays for college tuition for it's employees so I always think those strapping lads are secretly studious.
I saw a film tonight that you might like--'Dear Frankie'. It was adorable and there is a slightly Clive-ish man in it. He's actually more like a Scottish Matthew Fox, but it's still a cute film with great drab seaside landscapes.

i a totally with you on #6! we love dita & marilyn!
shobhana · January 28, 2007 at 08:57 AM
Your number 5 and 6 I can completely relate to. My grandfather has an old 1950's truck in his garage with no engine, no tires, actually it is just the shell of the truck, but I envisioned myself in a hot pink jumpsuit with glittery tools fixing that truck. There is something rather satisfactory in knowing you can fix a car. At the moment all I can do is change a flat tire, looks like we have a ways to go. As for Dita Von Teese, I too was disappointed that things did not work out for her and her fellow. I just talked with my sis, The Fanciful Twist, about that last week. Oh well, at least she has a massive champagne glass she can bathe in to make herself feel better.

I love your love of X! (like Nicole I found them via The Veeg, my celebrity husband).. and I too am sad at the demise of the Dita marriage. She seems so lovely (and I secretly have always loved The Husband, alas).
also! Package mailing wacky thwarted, my prints came! LOVELY!! Framed and perfect in my house now!! Thankyou!! :)

Hi Emily,
you might like this Japanese movie,
'Tony Takitani'
one of the characters passionately collects couture clothes; it is a tragic story but is a beautiful movie!
"Based on a story by celebrated Japanese author Haruki Murakami, this visually poetic fable tells the story of Tony Takitani (Issei Ogata), a solitary technical illustrator. Raised as an only child and partially estranged from his father, Takitani is unaware of his own loneliness until he falls in love with Eiko (Rie Miyazawa). He soon marries her and comes alive for the first time. But Eiko's obsessive passion for couture leads to tragedy. "

I also feel very fond of the UPS man, whoever he is at the time. Are they treated well? Working too hard? Like you, I think its because they bring me presents (Ian has called the UPS truck the present truck his whole life- a name he made up).
And as far as M. Manson and Dita, things like those celebrity misfit relationships gone wrong woe me because they just further prove my husband's point that they are all egomaniacs (they probably are, but for some reason would like to believe they aren't).
Yay for broccoli!!
blair · January 28, 2007 at 07:33 PM
I love #4, maybe because I whole-heartedly agree with you. I have an entire chest of drawers for my socks, etc. (And thanks to your post re: Sock Dreams, I'm running out of room.) My mom's going to give me this beautiful old chest she painted black, white and red (I know, mom's cool!) so I can expand my collection.
Oh, and I love Liz McGrath's work! Haven't heard her music though.
I'm sad I missed your sale. (I was working, poo!) But I am glad that it went so well. Hopefully next time I can snag one of your dollies!
Ok, I'll stop now, that's a lot to read! ;)
Jennifer · January 28, 2007 at 07:48 PM
Oh my I think we're the same person! Ha! I totally forgot about broccoli when I made my list of weird things.
When I was 4 my new adopted mother asked me what I wanted for Christmas. It was my first real Christmas - tree, stockings, gifts, candy canes, etc. - I was so used to not having Christmas I didn't know what to ask for. I had recently eaten broccoli with cheese for the first time in my young life and aparantly loved it so much that I asked for it for Christmas. Nothing else, I wanted just broccoli..."little trees." I don't know that we ate broccoli for Christmas, but I got plenty of other gifts anyway. ;)

So, I know that you may not actually check the comments for this post, since it was a months ago, but I'm checking the backlog. I love your work!
A friend of mine is in love with socks as well, and lingerie-like things in general. She scored an old card catalog from the LA Public Library when they went fully electronic, and uses it to store her collection. I was so jealous! It is the cutest thing ever...
