Hey cuties.
I bought this book a few days ago with a nice little gift card to the book store, and I really need to show off some of it, because you will love it. I know for certain that this book has been blogged before (by Ms. Furious Poultry, maybe?) but I had to do it. It's the See and Sew book, which is allegedly for children, but I think we all know that the majority of the copies will reside on grown-up girl's bookshelves. All of the vintage sewing images are what sold me...see, even the endpapers are beautiful!
Well, truthfully it was the beautiful images AND the oversized, idiot-proof embroidery stitch instructions. I'd be lying if I said otherwise. I didn't know how to do a simple chain stitch until 3 days ago. Very sad, I am no "Renaissance crafter". Anyway, this book is just wonderful, and you will love it. I would imagine a little girl or boy would, too, but who knows. All I know is it made me so excited about sewing things for the new year (including a big present that is in the works for a birthday coming up very soon). I've just ordered loads of new fabric + felt supplies to make lovely dollies, and many canvases as well. I just have to un-wreck my studio from the blitz of holiday shipping that kind of killed it temporarily...
And, the other half of my post-title. I am just so mad about movies at this second. Yesterday, both Children of Men and the-movie-I've-been-obsessively-looking-forward-to, Pan's Labyrinth were supposed to arrive in theaters. Now, I didn't expect Athens to get Pan's Labyrinth (at least not immediately) but I figured Atlanta would. Nope. Not yet, anyway. And Children of Men? Starring my HUSBAND who is very famous? Not that one either? All that is playing is the likes of We are Marshall and Night at the Museum and movies you really couldn't pay me to watch. I am so sad. Yesterday was the first day that I really, really missed New York. I forlornly punched my old zip code in..."11211" for showtimes...and sure enough. Both of those films are playing, of course. I really almost cried, which I know is ridiculous. When I said I would mainly miss the movies and H&M (aside from friends, of course) I meant it.
To console ourselves my friend Jenny and I watched some choice selections from a "50 Horror Movie" Box set that she got for Christmas from her boyfriend. Most were hilarious, and we kinda skipped through alot. One, however, which has a hilarious title (Naked Massacre aka Born for Hell) was directly based on the Richard Speck murders and was really terrifying/shocking and actually very good. But maybe it just seemed good after the film we watched before that one, entitled Metamorphosis, in which a man pretty much turned into an honest-to-god Dinosaur with very little explanation. This is what it has come to. Good movies, please come soon.

When I get bummed about shows, I go vintage as well. We watched An American In Paris last night which is a film that I would love to jump inside and live in. I also got To Sir With Love for Christmas, which is a favorite that I can't wait to see again. Good luck on the movie front. I loved The Pursuit of Happyness if you haven't seen that. In general, Hollywood has been a big disappointment this holiday season.
Sounds like you had a wonderful holidaythough. Me too. And, I am excited to get to work on lots of fun projects for the New Year, plus who doesn't love Valentine's Day. I love pink and red!!!
I very much appreciate your positive and fun posts everyday. They are a boost of energy, fun and creative originality that have become something I really look forward to.
Best Wishes for a wonderful New Year & Have a very happy day today!

I, too, have been awaiting Pan's Labyrinth. The reviews made me think of the book Sophie's World.
And I'm pleased to find out that my husband has such a talented and interesting second wife! I guess bigamy is ok when it's Clive.

Hi Emily, Greetings from Queens, New York! I am sure New York/Brooklyn misses you too. Don't feel sad, just think about how much more you can get for your buck outside of New York, from living space to your own studio and being close to family. Sometimes I think about moving out of New York just to have a calmer, cheaper and quieter life. Maybe one day. Take good care and thanks for blogging that sewing book. I love the big illustrations. Happy Happy New Year!

oh no! you want me to go to the movies and take a shitty bootleg copy with my new camera I got for Christmas? I could probably load it onto a dvd and mail it to athens....haha, I'm riduculous...anyway...I am excited to see all your new works with the stitching and embroidery!!

Movies in Tucson can be devastating as well...I cut a little 4 color ad of Pan's labyrinth out of the new York Time's a couple weeks ago and just re-discovered it crumpled in my carpetbag...I love oversized, idiot-proof embroidery stitch instructions!!

Thnx for the nice big picture of the chain stitch! This is indeed an idiot-proof illustration of it.
I can see the light!
And it's a hand-chain-stitched-bright-yellow-woolish kinda light.

night at the museum was actually really cute, i took my baby cousin this week and surprisingly enjoyed it, as for the marshall movie, i've from huntington wv so it hurts to here anyone speak ill of it, it's a wonderful true story about a tragic plane crash that killed the entire football team and a few fans too, and devastated our community, everyone here knows someone who was effected by it, so it just makes me sad to see it looked down on

Love that book! I know what you mean about the movie thing. We live in ten-buck-two and it takes forever to get movies here. I am still waiting to see The Holiday!

1. Gotta put that book on my list!
2.We also had a movie blow this week. Turner Classic Movies has been moved off of our basic cable. I refuse to pay more. So we are stuck.
3. Have you seen The Queen? It was unbelievable. Each and every performance was perfection. I also loved Dream Girls. It was fun. Jennifer Hudson steals the show with her pipes. I also saw Persuit of Happyness, but alas it left me sort of down. Chris Gardner is inspiring, but the odds were so agains him, and so many others can not over come them. At least that is how I felt after the movie and I am not really a pesimistic person.
4. A question I have been meaning to ask you...is there a best day of the week to thrift?
Happy New Years!

That book is wonderful! I have always tried to "teach "myself first with a childrens book on the subject,I feel so much smarter when I dive in to the adult material!

I live in LA and we went to see Pan's Labyrinth yesterday... it is fantastic!!
The story line is great and the film is just beautiful. Keep watching Atlanta... and if you get desperate, LA is always a good place to visit.
As a former Athens-liver myself, I understand the waiting pain. You've definitely got some great perks there to offset them though!

OMG... love the book you picked out. Most of the images from the pictures you have are from Helen Grant. She was an incredible artist. I must take pictures of my Needlecraft magazines from 1919-1930. She did so much of the incredible artwork. I will do that sometime. I kept most of the mags just because of her artwork.. especially the one about the little girls frocks from Paris. C'est tres magnifique!

Now maybe I am dating myself or sound completely insane but for Christmas I got the box set of some of my favorite movies. The Anne of Green Gables Series. I always thought if I were in a class with Anne her and I would be bossom friends. I have already watched all three begining to end! If you haven't watched them I suggest you do. My heart soars and I cry every time.

NYC misses you too. I want to see both of those movies as well, but I am sure they will come down to Georgia soon.

Oh my gosh! I've been to your blog once before, but didn't have time to really check it out. Today however, I've been sitting here for at least an hour reading and drooling and going shopping....
LOVE your blog and really love the things you make and sell. There are 3 prints in your Etsy shop that I must have-they will go perfectly in my studio!
Happy New Year, from your newest fan!

Emily,
To tide you over you can listen to Guilerme Del Toro being interviewed on the Leonard Lopate show last Friday. The interview was great. I wanted to go into NYC to see the movie on Sunday but opted to stay home and cook.

Emily, I ordered the sewing book from Amazon used (like new) for a song (9.00 with shipping) and I LOVE it, thank you thank you thank you so much.
I am ready to teach my 5 year old to sew and she got very excited seeing it! I read your blog often and am busy recruiting fans to your wonderful artiness!
