Hello loves. How is Wednesday unfolding for you? It is barely lunch-time here on the East coast, so I'd imagine its not unfolding just yet for my little ladies on the West coast. And it's probably getting all folded up for bed soon on the Aussie front.
I just wanted to do a quick post-aroo and show this little painting that I made yesterday, inspired by the crazy girl-in-a-tree Joanna Newsom & her lovely song. I love that in "Peach, Plum, Pear", all of her overdubbed voices together sounds like a playground full of children singing. Crazy children, maybe. But it's a wonderful noise...er...sound.
Collage layers of vintage wallpaper (courtesy of my favorite Cookie) and book pages with acrylic on top. The original sold pretty much immediately, but prints are available if you love her. OH! And I just posted some Samplers, they'll be the last for a while while I re-group and plot my next packet-o-fun. So, yes, they're in the shop as of about 15 minutes ago.
So, lately I've been having to insulate myself extra-alot from the gross comments and leering and general animal-like behavior from the men that litter the streets in my neighborhood. It's BAD here, you guys. As in, I half-dread leaving the house because its so bad. I try to so hard to make a snow-globe around myself and ice them out & muffle their words and invasion, but it's so hard to do. It was so bad on Monday (as in, I felt so demoralized) it pretty much ruined my day. I mean, I was already having a sad day...but, goodness. I walk out the door, to make the little 10 block trek to the train station, so I can go to the darn PO, and its a non-stop harassment party til' I get to hipsterville (Bedford Ave., where the train is). The only good thing that has come out of my almost comically frequent street harassment here is that my dear Kate Black (and etsy friend) exposed me to this amazing website...you have to check it out.
Anyway, the whole reason that I mentioned this aspect of Brooklyn-life is that A.) It bugs me. & B.) Joanna Newsom goes a long way to helping me make a snowglobe around myself. Because she's kind of the opposite of that disgusting, human-garbage behaviour. I imagine myself and her and her enormous harp and maybe a swan or two and a tree that is shedding its leaves all around, and it helps make the layers of insulation thicker, but unfortunately, not impenetrable.

Ugh! I am so sorry you have to endure that. Generally I think of myself as pretty tough, but that kind of grossness just... ugh, darn near paralyzes me. Which I guess is the desired effect, sadly. I work on making my bubble impenetrable too -- it's very difficult sometimes, eh? Hang in there, little lady. You're not alone, and you are so much better than that.

That's terrible!!! You must have to use Bedford because they have the package machine? There is a really small homey nice PO on Lorimer if you are familiar with the area...might be less of a hassle or try google-ing post office and click locations that may be closer to you? geez...good luck, that's just terrible!

I am continually amazed by your loveliness. I hope those gross guys bite their tongues or something.
Mama Urchin · September 20, 2006 at 03:42 PM
are you sure those guys aren't just yelling, "THANKS FOR SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT"?
elizabeth · September 20, 2006 at 05:39 PM
Ohhhh, me too with Joanna. She saves so many days. Especially that song!
If you ever get the chance to see this amazing documentary, I think you'd like it.

Love Joanna and her harp...how is it in this world that there are not more harp players?
I loved the Holla Back website. I certainly think it's ok to tell these guys off...or at least take a picture of them...hopefully it will make them think twice. When I was in high school some guys were yelling at a friend and I in our car and proceeded to call us all sorts of names because we were trying to ignore them, I often wonder if they get the gals using that technique?
Hang in there, and keep cloaking yourself in the golden harp light!

Awwh that's horrible you have to put up with that sort of stuff near your home. I thought that sort of thing only happened on TV!
On a lighter note if you love Joanna Newsom check out this very pretty new ad for Melbourne that has her vocals as the backing track. Love.

Well, that's just awful. No one should have to dread leaving their apartment to walk around their own neighborhood. Loved the hollaback site, but still.... you shouldn't even have to hollaback. People should just be civilized.

hey there lovely girl! First time for commenting but I just knew that you would like Joanna Newsome, you are totally that kind of girl. If you haven't already you must check out kooky Swedish singer Stina Nordenstam.....love it. Keep inspiring us!!!

Something I notice helps is my daughter. Not that you should have a child to create a buffer but I do tend to notice when I am with her I get a glance but rare comments. When she is as school or with Grammy all gloves tend to be thrown off and some of the things I hear would make a sailor blush.

I am sorry, that just sucks. Whn I was in San Diego, I had to walk passed a few constuction sites and the 24 hour bar on the way to work. There were always bums hanging outside the bar at 7 AM, yelling lovely offers to me. The worst was a toothless old man asking if he could lick my, well you know. And since I am so damn polite, I said " No thank you" and kept on walking. What makes me laugh is wondering if anyone ever says "Oh Yes Please!"

emily,
emancipation is something that most men aren't ready for.. yet! but be patient, maybe not in our lifetime.. but if we can make a little difference to the children that come after us.. well, that's a lot.. and for a human being, more than enough.. at least in this lifetime. You are doing great!
digibudi · September 21, 2006 at 04:07 PM
Gawd. Sorry you have to deal with that. And I thought aussie men were gross. Maybe I should give them more credit - at least when I am harassed it is always out of the blue and unexpected. I can understand that it must feel really uncomfortable being leered at constantly. Love that website by the way - awesome!
And I ADORE Joanna Newsom - saw her about a year ago in the middle of summer in an underground nightclub where the airconditioning had broken. It must have been over 45 degrees celcius down there and she proved to be a real trooper, pulling off a great show (she even had a headcold!). You've made me wanna go listen to her. The painting is a great tribute to her.

Love the link to the Hollaback NYC site. Here in L.A. it's just as bad, only it happens when you're in your car, stuck in traffic, with some asswipe next to you leering and catcalling - and nowhere to go. Ugh.
