The Creeping Corridor

April 22, 2008

I haven't just been sewing away since we got back from our trip, I've been doing some painting, too (before and after Portland).
I have to kinda have my hands in multiple projects at one time in order to feel balanced and also, to get my best ideas.  I'm still hung up on those creepers from a few posts ago, so some of the 2-D work includes the 3-D characters...which makes me very happy.

This piece has been through about 10 coats of varnish and sanding, and it has a lovely, glassy finish on the surface (almost like an encaustic painting with the warm, yellow-y wax).

I'm waiting for about 7 different kinds of supplies to get here, but there's still plenty to be done in the Black Apple studio/workroom, so I'm gonna hop (or maybe creep) to it.

This is one my favorites so far Emily! That ornate dark frame sets this one off amazingly.

I am anxious for your Etsy update!

Very charming, indeed. I love the ornamental shape of the frame/wood panel. Did you get your new sewing machine?

Oooo.. Emily, this is one of your best! It's wonderful and I love the look the varnish has added to the overall feel of the image. It's so storybookish - in the very best possible ways. Bravo!

I love the idea of using images of your art in your paintings..the painting is wonderful. I would love to see your work illustrate a childrens book someday :)

I love your creeping bunnies. They're just as cute in paint as they are in fabric. Nice work! :)

Kinda reminds me of my caty creepeth painting that I scored from you a few updates ago. I did this wild photohunt journey around my neighborhood and I think that you would love some of the shots. It is one of the neighborhoods I was suggesting you would like for a philly burb. Here it is..

I LOVE them!!! And for some reason, I hear "Dance of the SUgar Plum Fairy" in my head when I look at this piece!

Love the shadows on the wall!

This is so beautiful. There's just something about your work that is enchanting. Your paintings show such emotion, and I'm drawn to them. These creeping bunnies of yours are to die for, I just love this. Painting on wood is so great. Kudos!!!

I am so amused by the fact that all the people in your paintings and drawings look like an almost "ethereal" version of you! :-)

Fantastic!!

Hello Emily! I am Jana from Athens (!!!) Greece! Currently living in Spain. I have been visiting your blog for some time now and I like it very much! Thanks for sharing your ideas and keep up the great job you are doing...

It reminds me of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story - "The Yellow Wallpaper." I think it is because of the term - "creeping." Bunnies creeping out of the wallpaper and parading around the room. Deliciously "creepy." Does anyone else see that? Lovely work, I always enjoy seeing what you come up with next!!

I have to emerge from my lurking to tell you that this is my favorite painting you've ever done.

Glad you liked the polka-dot package; I was excited to find a way to make bubble mailers cute.

Natasha · April 22, 2008 at 06:48 PM

don't know if this has been suggested...

but can you do a print of your paintings on the wood panels, glue them onto similar wood pieces, varnish them like heck and sell those.

They wouldn't be "original"'s, but then more people could have them.

I love your creepy creeping bunny's...I can almost see them swishing/gliding along the floor. Gives me chill's. :D
