The very insightful and kind New Media/Marketing expert Antonio Gould (who some will remember from his visit at the Etsy labs last year, which I believe can still be viewed on Youtube) has produced a 5th segment in his podcast series. They're each about different aspects of utilizing new, Internet/digital tools to build your business...and yours truly makes an appearance on the newest (Episode 5)!
You can listen to my dorky voice, and Antonio's thoughtful podcast here.
I feel very special that he asked me to appear on this segment...but now I'm a bit paranoid that everything I say sounds like a question.
Happy Wednesday!

I am listening right now, and your voice is so NOT dorky! You sound really nice. Not at all how I expected your voice to sound, though!
Erika · February 20, 2008 at 05:07 PM
I find myself so silly because despite the fact that you're in Athens, GA, I just kept imaging you having such a posh voice, which I guess is from your writing. Need no worry though, I found your voice very charming, almost comforting. And not dorky. Cheers!

Hi Emily, I really enjoyed listening to you on the podcast - your voice sounded like I expected. I blogged a little about it (not about your voice - about the podcast and you :) - http://karlitashop.blogspot.com/ . You are an inspiration to read ànd to listen to now :)
karlita · February 20, 2008 at 05:52 PM
it was lovely to hear your voice and your thoughts about blogging. i agree, you don't sound dorky at all, but not how i thought you would sound.

Hi Emily -
I love reading your blog and it was great to hear the podcast. And I cracked up about your observation re: everything sounding like a question. I agree! You do sound like that! But it was a great interview anyway and I really enjoyed hearing your experience. Your work and your business are very inspirational to me, so thank you!
Best wishes,

Well Emily, how fun to hear your voice !! But I also really enjoyed what you had to say about having a blog. You stated very well what a fun and interesting medium it is. I just think those who do not have blogs just do not understand what it is like. But you stated it very well. You know I loved your work when I first saw it. But after reading your blog for a while and getting to know you a bit, it makes your art work more special. That is the beauty of blogging. Clarice

LOL! Love the southern accent. I like Antonio's accent too. You sound like you're being interviewed on NPR's "World Have Your Say" except no one's interrupting or being rude :)

Emily, I discovered your Etsy shop which led me to your blog and I've been one of those people who look but never comment since! I just wanted you to know what an inspiration you are to me. I'm constantly like how did she learn to knit a hat already? What did I do with my week? i love your aspirations to be a renaissance craftswoman, it somehow makes me feel better about my own attempts. Thank you again,

Hi Emily! I've been reading your blog for about a year and a half now and I haven't really ever commented except maybe twice, but after listening to your interview today I felt compelled-- you have such a great business here and I find it incredibly inspiring. I am in the middle of finishing a science degree right now and so reading your blog, and a few others, has been a great way to unwind and enjoy some of the lovely, creative things other people are working on. Thanks for sharing so much of your business and creative process with all of us out here!

Hi Emily, I'm a "lurker", and it's your interview that has drawn me to leave you a message! I love that you run a successful self-made business, I love your blog and all your imagery. You're a great photographer! I am soon to purchase some of your gorgeous prints to give to my 9 year old daughter to hang on her bedroom wall... then I look around the rest of my house and try to imagine where else I can hang your art because it is so so beautiful. I await with great anticipation all you create. ANd one last cooment, I LOVE your picture you drew of yourself for this entry. So sweet!

It's always neat to hear the voice behind the blog! I have been wondering for some time now if you had a southern accent. I'm glad that you are having such success with your art, you have a very special talent!
Cheers!

Thank you for sharing your link. There are some great tips about blogging. Just so you know your voice is lovely and almost everybody hates the sound of their own voice.
Here may be a reason why. http://scienceblogs.com/cortex/2008/02/all_in_the_mind.php
Cheers!

...yeah I know how it is to actually "listen" to your own voice.
When I hear mine, I'm always like "thats me"?
I also wondered if you had a southern accent.
I enjoyed listening to your interview, I think you did great!
:)
miss.michelle · February 21, 2008 at 02:02 AM
I very much enjoyed listening to that podcast. I liked hearing your reactions to the bewildering mystery of Internet popularity.
My wife and I were struck by your apparent absence of southern accent. (I've been to Atlanta and I, California boy born and bred, started picking it up in three days!) When he dropped in that absolutely precious outtake, we both squealed. SO appealing, so charming. I kind of prefer it to your "radio voice."

This subject is so fascinating -- thank you for sharing the link.
Seriously, your voice is not dorky.
I guess I qualify as a lurker on your blog, although I've commented once or twice. I didn't realize how long I've been reading until just now, looking through your archives -- two years -- which seems to be from almost the beginning, although when I found your blog, I thought you'd already been blogging for a while. I can tell you that I found your blog -- through Alicia Paulson's blog, I think -- and your blog is directly how I found Etsy, which has been an incredible and life-changing experience.
So honestly, I think I owe you a huge bit of gratitude, and I have never said thank you.
Thank you!!

I think you sound good... Like a real person, as opposed to just fairytale world girl (a wonderful thing to be, mind you). I don't think you sound the least bit dorky.
..and huzzah for being an example of a "micro-global something or another site" - said in a posh accent.
That was awesome! =^.^=

Aww, you don't sound dorky at all. I think the interview was great and I really enjoyed listening to it. It was very informative and I learned a bit more about how this blog functions to keep your customers in touch with you and your shop. Awesome work.
Marie · February 21, 2008 at 12:25 PM
Great, Emily! I'm still grinning over your theatrical southern accent - it sounded sort of like Jessica Simpson!
BTW, your voice doesn't sound like I thought. I was waiting for this little-girlish voice to come out. Either way, you rock!
Andi · February 21, 2008 at 01:17 PM
I love a girl that can break into a drawl in the blink of an eye! Seriously, I think that was one of the best podcasts I've heard ever. I'm not kidding. You were great! xo

I am a "lurker" who is hoping to start my own etsy shop this summer. i don't expect to have the kind of success as a "global microbrand" that you have, but I am certainly looking at you as an inspiration! thanks for posting this interview, your perspective is helpful to me right now as i am starting to get going on my new little business!
aside from that, i love your work! cheers!

I think you sound as cute as cute as you look, and surprisingly normal!! ;) LOVE the accent. I personally hate the way my voice sounds, unless it's what I hear reverberating around in my skull. Funny how that works... anyway, good for you for getting out and about in the public eye (or ear)! You really do inspire. *B

you do a very nice job, keep up the good work!

My fiance and I loved your interview! I lived in the south of the US for a while and love the southern accent, so I thought it was too cute when you went for it!
The interview was very encouraging and inspiring. And I abviously felt compelled to comment after being summoned! LOL! :-D
Roberta J. · February 22, 2008 at 05:18 AM
Wow! You are just a natural at that Miss Emily. And, I learned a new word ephemeral: lasting only a short time.
That interviewer had a cute accent, didn't you think! You did such a great job and it was actually really good information.
By the way, my mom doesn't read my blog either! What's up with that!!?! :)
tiffany · February 22, 2008 at 11:13 AM

Dear Black Apple: Seems that you have been posting less lately. Also, nothing on your thrifting. Any good finds?
Please consider making your next store update happen at 7-10pm for those who do not have the luxury of being home all day!
Great segment on blogging and your inflections are very typical of the under 30 crowd. So, don't be too hard on yourself. If you can change your pronunciation to no longer sound southern, getting rid of the rising intonation will be a piece of cake!

Dear Emily,
I want to thank you so much for the link to the interview. I very much enjoyed everything including your voice which sounds so sweet, fresh, self-confident and smart. I think that Antonio Gould did a great job by putting all these interviews together. Isn't it amazing how the whole internet/digital world is changing everything so fast? I am glad that I have a blog too, it makes such a big difference in the life of a creative person. And thank you so much for your blog! It was one of the very first ones that I ever saw before I started mine last year.
Have a great day!
