Thriftscore

November 20, 2007 · Old Things, Thrifted Things

I'm back from antique-ing, and I scored big time! I had to share right away...

Some_girls_1848
I found a big stack of great fairy tale books, and a 1920's yearbook.

On top of that is a silver, nut-crackin' squirrel:

I think his face looks hilarious with the "cracker" part down. He really might sit on our sink and hold our sponge, but I like to think that a walnut or two might come his way.

There was also this amazing Red Riding Hood/Big Bad Wolf two sided doll, which isn't vintage, but is amazing nonetheless (the wolf side, especially!)

Also, this sweet spotted teapot:

I also got a pretty tablecloth (which is in the wash right now), a few embroidered napkins, this great oval-framed print (which is waiting to have a bandit mask applied to the Mister who resides in it), some oval embroidery hoops, a beautiful vintage photo of a boy...and...

The BEST score of all:

Some_girls_1843
This beautiful wooden Cinderella lamp! It's in immaculate shape, and works perfectly (even the week night light in the back). I love that it has a narrative...see the little shoe in the prince's hand? Notice she's missing one on her little stockinged foot!

I have to admit...this is my favorite part:

*Sigh*

I really this this is maybe my best thrifting find ever...or it might be tied with the wee piano. At any rate, it's one of the best, for sure.

Okay, I'm off to stare at my lamp some more.

Wow - what a great antique'ing day you had.
I'm sick with jealousy.
They are all so amazing Emily.

Sigh, indeed! What lovely treasures you've found! :) And now I must go dream of antiquing! :) I am rather in love with Mr/Miss Big Bad Wolf!

Happy Thanksgiving (a tad early). :)

Oh, good gravy, Emily--where did you go? Somewhere right in Athens? Clearly you got all the good stuff already, but I must know the spot for future reference!

melissa Crowe · November 20, 2007 at 07:23 PM

I love the nutcracker squirrel!

Jill · November 20, 2007 at 07:42 PM

That squirrel is amazing! I agree that these are up there, although the piano is still pretty great.

esoule · November 20, 2007 at 07:59 PM

love love LOVE the squirrel nutcracker!!!

Suzy · November 20, 2007 at 08:24 PM

where *did* you go?
That spotted teapot looks exactly like the shape we sold at the paint-your-own-pottery studio I used to manage! Does it have initials on the bottom? Or tiny little prong thingies where the glaze is sharp?

Tara · November 20, 2007 at 08:55 PM

oh i love that little clock

I had no idea antiques could be so cute!

Jaime · November 20, 2007 at 10:13 PM

I'm going to be dreaming of finding my own Cinderella lamp from now on.

Petula · November 20, 2007 at 11:12 PM

What wonderful finds.

I still DO have the Red-Riding-Hood-Grandma-Wolf doll, sitting on my desk as I type this. Lying down, actually, since I can never decide which way to stand her-her-it up. And I've had it since I was a small child, and since I'm older than 20, it's vintage, according to Etsy rules, anyway. Mine looks a lot dirtier than that, though.

Of course, I always thought she-she-it-they were totally unique, handmade or close to it, until this summer, when she-she-it-they started popping up on thrifting blogs across the country.

She-she-it-they are delighted to find they have so many previously unknown sisters-sisters-siblings.

Nena · November 21, 2007 at 12:58 AM

exciting! maybe you should open a dessert/antique shop in the future?

kim* · November 21, 2007 at 03:00 AM

Wow wee! You did good :)

cassie · November 21, 2007 at 04:10 AM

I had that same big bad wolf / red ridding hood doll as a child. In fact I think its still in my daughters toy box. I loved it!

Ashleigh · November 21, 2007 at 07:10 AM

I found a bunch of old year books the other weekend at the Swap Meet and I didn't get them! I was set on finding Vintage X-mas decorations of which I only found a few good things. The nut cracker is adorable and I love the framed picture. I can't wait to see it bandit-i-fied. I think if we knew eachother in real life we would take over all the swap meets and thrift stores in town!! I need more friends like that.
xoxo

Jessica Marie · November 21, 2007 at 09:30 AM

I seem to not be the only one who had the red riding hood/big bad wolf doll as a child. i'm not sure what happened to mine...i think it may be in one of those boxes of toys that my mom is keeping for grandchildren.

risa · November 21, 2007 at 10:17 AM

Count me in with all the other 70's children here who had the Red Riding Hood-Big Bad Wolf doll. It was one of my favorite dolls, along with my Baby Chrissy and My Baby Beans.

Megan · November 21, 2007 at 12:06 PM

Oh how neat, that looks like a much older version of the Children's Wonder book that I am currently reading. What a bunch of great finds.
