Redhead: "I TOLD you it wasn't a good idea for all of us to try to squeeze into this cardigan!"
Blondie: "But I was hoping it would bring us all closer together."
Ms. Black-hair: (Rolls eyes) "Oh, what does it matter. We're going off to different homes soon anyway."
Pinkie: "Don't be so cynical."
A batch of new, pretty, personality-filled Sophie dolls for the shop update tomorrow! Remember, it's 2:00 Eastern time (I think I said EST, but we all know I'm just a forgetful Fran and it's actually EDT).
Also pretty:
I could no longer resist the stack-of-books bookshelf from Design Within Reach (or as I like to think of it, "Design Mostly Way Out Of My Reach"). I thought about it a great deal, and I was so pleased when it arrived today. I really love the illusion of an enormous stack of books, while also maintaining the function of, well, actually being able to get to one's books without having to un-pile the enormous pile..
Josiah says it looks like we have some sort of magical books, and I heartily agree

Okay. Ahem, I am having an issue. You see, I have this whole stack of books too. I was looking for a book on schooners today. It was way at the bottom. It was a work out.. I eased, I nudged, I attempted to wobble out... I ended up having to take everything down to get it.. So, what is the magic secret??? Or, is the workout the benefit??
Well, it looks darned wonderful, so who cares how you are going to getthe bottom one out.. hahahaha.
Funny enough, your girls just stare at me like I am not the smartest gal, while I attempt such feats...
Oh, and I am in love with your little dolly convo. xxo, V

Umm, you can block any further comments from me. HAhaaha. I am ordering one this instant. I missed the link completely. I tell ya, I am a 98 year old, really.
A Fanciful Twist · August 06, 2007 at 07:28 PM
How awesome is the stack of books thing. Thanks for sharing. And the dolls are gorgeous. Good to see they all have their own personalities.
Linda · August 06, 2007 at 07:45 PM
WHEEEEE! Stacks of books that don't fall over. YAY!
Pretty dolls. YAY!
Dave · August 06, 2007 at 08:04 PM
The bookshelf looks great, but I want to learn more about those gorgeous shoes!!!
Gwen · August 06, 2007 at 08:51 PM
oh my that book shelf it to die for... the price is a bit of an eye sore, but well worth it!! Definitely on my wish list.
JennaLou · August 06, 2007 at 09:14 PM
yipes... out of my reach for sure, lol. I'm going to have to give in and buy some boring old bookshelves soon.
LOVE the dolls! My goodness I wish I could rationalize buying one... but with the cats about just yet it's not wise. :( ADORABLE!
Sarah · August 06, 2007 at 09:47 PM
those girlies are just waaay too cute! :) I especially adore the pink-haired one. but I think that is because secretly I wish I had pink hair (pink is my favorite color). ;) hehe.
that bookshelf is *amazing*! wow. if only I could afford it, 'cause goodness knows my floors are covered with *stacks* of books! lol.
keep up the amazing work!! (and inspirational blogging...)
casey · August 06, 2007 at 10:32 PM

This reminds me of a project I heard about from ReadyMade.
http://readymademag.com/blog/2006/09/03/floating-books/
Looks pretty neat, but your shelf seems much more convinient.
Ka · August 07, 2007 at 01:04 AM
I love that bookshelf. And I couldn't have imagined the dolls that cute!
cindy · August 07, 2007 at 03:03 AM
You must have such a steady hand to paint the detail in their face like that. Sadly, I think I'm the messiest painter alive. They're adorable.
I have been eyeing one of those magical bookshelves myself over at cb2.com
Sadly I think our house has quite enough storage for my books as is. So the purchase as lovely and satisfying as it would be, just wouldn't be justified.
Nicole · August 07, 2007 at 07:59 AM
OMG I really did think you had magical books....it looks spendid, maybe I will need to get one, it would look perfect in my new studio.
stilettoheights · August 07, 2007 at 08:08 AM
Your dollies are chatty, too, I see! : )
I used to work in a library (that's me....Miss Librarian) and the 700's always looked magically stacked....they, however, would have easily fallen upon any poor art loving soul who might venture into their wilderness!
Marjorie · August 07, 2007 at 08:31 AM
I just might have to order one of those bookshelves, as I love books but they are starting to cause some serious clutter.
I noticed a Diane Arbus book....have you seen the movie "Fur"? I loved it.
Christine · August 07, 2007 at 09:33 AM
The dolls are super-adorable! And I love your room - the color, the furniture, the way you organize everything. It's so beautiful!
Maritza · August 07, 2007 at 10:38 AM
the dollies are adorable as is their bantering.
and that pile of books? yes, very suessian in deed - i really really love the look of that. Hmm...perhaps it might end up in one of your paintings. the big pile of books waiting impatiently next to Betty Bibliophile.
cristina - string*THEORY · August 07, 2007 at 11:32 AM
Those girls are up to something, I can just tell. Best split them up soon-like, or you're bound to have a mess in the kitchen and loose hedgehogs running wily-nilly through the halls.
And it's true. Your stack of books is indeed magical; (finally giving me the opportunity to make a totally weak segue in service of a thought that has been bouncing around in my head for weeks now and say) SPEAKING of magic books, that "Mary and Mitten" print in your shop? /lowers voice. I'm fairly certain it's not Mary at all, but rather one Miss Luna Lovegood, of Hogwarts fame. Whoever has the original hanging at home should keep an eye out. I bet sometimes she's not there.
karaalison · August 07, 2007 at 12:50 PM
I'm cursing my slow internet connection! I just missed out on your paintings and so I hope I get luckier next time you update! I wish you had a lot of little elves to help you make more beautiful work.
moya · August 07, 2007 at 02:11 PM
I can't believe almost everything was sold in less than 10 minutes. I'm so sad and a bit upset my browser was like in a crash because there were too much people in your shop, I miss everything I wanted to buy :(
hope you'll be doing another shop update very soon :'(
annejulie · August 07, 2007 at 02:12 PM
I'm wailing, sobbing over here...I had "What Does the City" in my cart and couldn't find my Etsy password.
Alicia H. · August 07, 2007 at 02:20 PM
Goodness me, your lovely wares sell out so quickly! I never manage to catch them in time!
Violet · August 07, 2007 at 02:21 PM
It was in my cart too and I lost it as well, along with the the squirrel girl.. Then I lost the cat girl and the sketch of the girl in the city. I could only afford one thing and I ended up with nothing. :(
moya · August 07, 2007 at 02:24 PM
I had my eye on the squirrel girl too (of course, anyone who knows me knows about my squirrel love). Oh well, I suppose she was destined for a different home.

I was looking forward to this shop re-newal for a week now , or since it was announced .I wanted to buy a lovely doll , and was determined to do so . I stayed home today , and checked the shop , basically all afternoon . At nearly 2pm , I was checking constantly . It was 2 o'clock , and all the dolls were sold out , before they were even up posted . How can that be , I was checking and had my account and cart ready . I mean , I was checking each second like a race horse . It seemed the dolls were gone , before they were even up there . I stayed home , for nothing . This whole thing is not fair , and I am pretty upset about how that panned out . Didn't seem right to me . I purchased the cute buttons recently , but am so upset by that display , or lack of display and not even given the chance to click on one . I was on top of it too ,I am really disappointed . I don't think I will be back here to follow or read Emily's blogs , and certainly not even try to purchase . The whole thing was not fair at all . They were gone , and had never been put up . I would know , I checked each and every second . I went from total excitement thinking I'd finally have one , to seeing sold out , before they were up :( Take care everyone . I wish everyone well .
Missy Rose · August 07, 2007 at 03:12 PM
WOW - so much sold so fast! Congratulations on all your success ;o)
Suzy · August 07, 2007 at 03:22 PM
Why oh why can I not get my hands on one (just ONE) of your pretty dolls!?!? My daughter wants one- she's three so he wants one NOW! :-( I guess next update I can try again. You're stuff is awesome Emily! I just received my prints in yesterday's mail. Love the new labels too!
Jessica · August 07, 2007 at 03:24 PM
I never saw the dolls either--I wondered how they sold before they came up? I wish Etsy put limits on the number of originals people could buy...
moya · August 07, 2007 at 03:42 PM
I was going to try to get a sibling for my Pink haired Sophie doll, maybe next time.
She is sitting in my bedroom and I just adore her. I'll definitely have to get another. They just make me smile everytime!

I think Etsy has been a little slow today...that might be what caused the delays with listings mentioned above. I did see your pretty little dollies up in your shop for a time and watched them, one by one, bounce happily off to their new homes. : ) Congrats on your shop update, your work is much loved, indeed, miss Emily! : )
Everything looked wonderful! : )
Marjorie · August 07, 2007 at 03:57 PM
I was too late!!!
:-(((
When will you have new dolls and drawings up there???
I already own some prints, but would love to own an original painting as well.
And of course one of these gorgeous dolls for my little girl.
Amazing work!!!
liesbeth1322 · August 07, 2007 at 04:03 PM
The dolls were posted, cause I managed to snag one...which suprised me, cause I know I was electronically fighting with tons of other people for it, but I managed to come away with it...
i'm sure there will be prints from the original paintings...I want a Squirrel Girl when they come available...she's awesome...
donner · August 07, 2007 at 04:22 PM
have to say you paint the most gorgeous pictures!!!!!I have been drooling over them at your Etsy store before, so I think I may have to order something very soon!
btw, that bookshelf was awesome!!!!
mari from norway
Mari · August 07, 2007 at 04:51 PM
I've been hearing about this bookshelf/case everywhere, but have never seen it - or at least not till now. Wow, I totally get why everyone is talking about it, that's completely awesome. I must have one! Hm...at least, I must have a closer look, to see if I could *make* one.
sarah · August 07, 2007 at 05:17 PM
I hope there will be prints but I do so badly want an original--a print is wonderful but it isn't the same...
moya · August 07, 2007 at 05:21 PM
Oh, goodness friends. When you covet lovelies such as those from the Black Apple as much as we all seem to do, it can be ever so disappointing to not be able to take home the sweet thing you've had your eye on, for sure. Let's just not blame the dear proprietess for her success and complain too loudly that others made it there first. Disappointing? Heavens, yes. Her fault? Oh, no.
karaalison · August 07, 2007 at 06:26 PM
Congratulations to everyone who scored a lovely new bit of art! And also to Emily for your (well deserved) success!
Annalise · August 07, 2007 at 06:52 PM
As the song says, "you can't always get what you want." I agree with karaalison and it seems almost ridiculous to boycott someone's shop just because it's so popular. Anyway, I think the success is great and it makes me very hopeful for all independent artists and crafters at the same time.
Heather · August 08, 2007 at 03:04 AM
Well said karaalison. I've been at every release Ms Emily has had since March and I've seen the website come to almost a complete stop because of all of the traffic and I've seen beautiful pieces almost make it into my shopping cart. It's always exciting and sometimes a little disappointing. So far, I had only come away with a stripey hedgie tshirt for my daughter 4 months ago. I finally lucked out with much perseverance last night and "won" the lovely squirrel girl painting. I'm beyond thrilled and can hardly wait for that little lady to arrive!
Stephanie · August 08, 2007 at 08:53 AM
very cool.
eurobrat · August 08, 2007 at 06:04 PM
Hear, hear, girls. And congratulations Stephanie! What wonderful luck. Treat that sweet squirrel girl well. :)
