The Black Eyed Susan 8"x10"x2" Acrylic on canvas
Another new painting...and I swear that I began this piece before the recent "unpleasantness", so nobody worry that this is a portrait of my current devastation or anything so timely. ;)
This girl was one of those that really grew on me the more I put her down and picked her back up again to work on. One of my favorite things about painting is how their expressions just kind of "happen", and they are always, always just right. I mean, I suppose I have a log of expressions that I love in my head, and they intuitively present themselves, but still...it's almost like the visual version of watching your character or story unfold before you as a writer.
Happy Monday, everyone!
PS: I've gotten lots of emails about th paint colors in my hom. The color of my bedroom (the pretty blue from the last post) was already here when I moved into my flat! My whole apartment was already painted my favorite colors. Can you believe it? So, sadly, I can't tell any of you the color, because I don't know it myself!

She's absolutely lovely. From her lovely pink dress to the black eye.

My blue wall that looks just like Emily's is "Robin's Egg Blue" from Martha Stewart.
P.S. I love Black Eyed Susan's little buttons!

Miss Emily- you are truly talented! Where do you find the time!?!
I love your work and your blog... you are such a gem!

I think my favorite part is that colour combination where the black meets the rosy pinky lid, in combination with her grey-blue eyes. There's something about those three that feels so autumnal and deep. love it, love it.
I do have to admit that all this flaming has got the old Art v. craft debate going round and round my head again! Where oh where do we draw that line? and really - why must we?

i love her dress, so very pretty and ladylike. and i am usually not a fan of pink, but i do love this soft gradient of pinks you use, along with the pale yellowish background! (i framed the alice in wonderland set in our dining room, it just looks so cute, will share pictures with you soon!!)

Any chance that the blue bedroom is painted in Behr's "Blue Rhapsody?" I've been looking for that exact shade since you posted your first picture of it, Emily! It's especially gorgeous because it looks so perfect with red. If anybody figures it out, I'd love to know!

Oh, man, I want her haircut desperately! Unfortunately, my hair is just too curly to pull that adorable style off.

How lucky you are to have a lovely prepainted apartment. I love the pinks in your new painting!

Already painted in your colors? That's super cool! Must've been a factor in deciding to live there, too - it was meant to be :P

Well, she's just lovely. I'm currently in an Edie Sedgwick phase (why, yes, I did watch Factory Girl this weekend) and her eyes look very "mod" to me. (only without the drug addiction, you know.)

That is the most amazing luck about the flat... or maybe it was just a sign that you were supposed to move in.
We had a bad experience at out last place and when we decided to move here, I came by at night one time.. just to drive by and see what the neighborhood was doing in the evening and the little house was all lit up.. even on the outside. It was like a beacon and I said to myself. This is it. It's a sign. And you know, I've never been happier than I have been here.
Love the new painting! I like her little flapper haircut and her cute feather hairpin... darling!

she just beautiful and I wish I had a dress like hers.
I can't believe your apartment was already painted those colors. You must have walked in and said, "I have to move in!"

Your paintings are just so beautiful.. Even a black eyed girl! :)
Your style reminds me of Mark Ryden.
All the best...
Your applet nily :)

I love her. I'm also sorry to hear mention of unpleasantness and hope everything is good with you now, sweet, lovely Emily.

Love your style of painting. Reminds me of some pictures a girl friend had in her room when we were young. Very sweet.

Sorry to draw it out, but as someone who also worked hard for their BFA, I wanted to add: your work inspires me more than any Pollock or Picasso ever has.
Proud to be an Applet.
Good luck
