Hello sweet peas! I can't believe it is almost a third of the way into the month already...I really need to get on top of that Summer to-do list before July is eaten up.
I have some more thank-you-for-being-around presents for you guys today, 3 different postcard packs (which means that 3 people will be getting presents!).
It'll go like this: Just leave a comment, saying hi, giving me beauty secrets, favorite books, whatever you'd like. You can do this til' Tuesday night @ 11:59 EST. I'll draw 3 numbers, and then whoevers comment matches that number will get the present! Please make sure that your email address is with your comment, and that it's correct, because I gots to email you to get your mailing address!
(Little Bear, Cupcake Peddlers, and Hi There Postcard Packs)
This weekend was really quiet for me, which was nice. Almost bordering on boring-ish, but good. I went shopping with Sara on Saturday, made a not-fancy-but-nice summer dinner (salmon, rice, and heaps of broccoli with juicy peaches for dessert) with Josiah:
...watched some movies...cleaned out the studio (it just seems to be that time for everybody) and just sketched and read.
Nice, nice.
This captures one of the prettiest fruits of the studio-organizing-labor:
Another extension of my fabric/notions storage system. I have a "dresser" of sorts that holds other, color-sorted fabrics, but there was absolutely not enough room in there for all of the great fabric I have + keep acquiring!
Happy Monday, everyone!

Two poignantly beautiful books I think you would like to read:
1. The Diving Bell and The Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby
2. The Little Locksmith by Katherine Butler Hathaway.
Happy Reading,
Cyndy

I made an amazing pasta dish this weekend, farfalle (bowties) with garlic-sauteed broccoli, olive oil, various herbs, generous chunks of feta cheese, and toasted hazelnuts over baby greens and arugula. It was pretty good.
Beauty secret #1, be loving, it makes you glow!
Off to organize my bead mess, no matter how lovely they are all piled up.

I love the pictures of your lovely home. I would highly recommend "Like Water For Chocolate" and "The Time Traveler's Wife" -- they seem like books you would love.

Um...I don't have a beauty TIP but I will recommend becoming a member at Makeupalley.com People review all sorts of products and it has saved me a lot of money!
Your skin looks delicate so I'm not sure my favorite tip would be the best...it's an aspirin and honey mask that is very highly recommended by others Makeup Alley members.

Cant recommend a book or a beauty secret both have gone out the window since I had my baby. So here is a great children's book that adults can learn from too... The Giving Tree.
Stefanie · July 09, 2007 at 03:52 PM
Like Water for Chocolate is one of my all time favorites as well! My beauty secret is tea tree oil. It works for everything you can think of. Some are to gross to mention here...
ashley d · July 09, 2007 at 03:55 PM
Maybe I'm being a little cheeky entering this, postage-wise, since I live in Britain, but anyhoo I won't win and the important things are:
1) Anagrams by Lorrie Moore
and
2) Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich
and finally
3) Swann by Carol Shields
Anna · July 09, 2007 at 03:57 PM
Oh I definitely agree The Giving Tree is such a wonderfully touching book for both children and adults!
My all time favorite book that I read again and again when I need a little creative energy would have to be Alice In Wonderland though!
Stephanie F. · July 09, 2007 at 04:00 PM
The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Absolutely amazing!

2. Wisdom of the Sands - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
3. The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath
4. Catcher in the Rye (and other stories) by J.D. Salinger
5. Any of Sylvia Plath's poetry (for examples, see my blog: http://spindulys.blogspot.com/search/label/sylvia%20plath )
Dave · July 09, 2007 at 04:01 PM
Yes, everyone has been cleaning out their little studios. I started last weekend... whew, looks much better, but man was there a lot of stuff in there. Looks like you are doing a good job with your clean up as well.
Reading... hmmm.. we have read everything under the sun this summer, of course they have all been children's books... sooo... the only one we read that crosses over was "Thimble Summer". Just thought it was a good summer book. Oh, and Volksy, The Little Yellow Car. Emma just loves this book, mainly because I am seriously considering getting a new beetle. My father still has his from 1972. It is Olympia Blue, man, if I could just convince VW to use that color again!

1. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon
2. The Awakening by Kate Chopin
3. No one belongs here more than you by Miranda July
4. And an old favorite... The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery (which seems the sort of thing that you would love)
Thanks again for being a gift-giving sweetheart. :)

My very favorites are the Harry Potter series. I know, I know. But they are wonderful, and Harry Potter was the very first boy I ever had a crush on. I also like A Series of Unfortunate Events, which, with Brett Helquest's illustrations, are delightfully morbid. And because you are a grown-up and might want to read grown-up books, I will suggest P.G. Wodehouse and David Sedaris as well, because they are both very funny.
Maddy · July 09, 2007 at 04:20 PM
Two book recommendations:
Child: An Ordinary Princess by M.M. Kaye (very cute, pet squirrels, forest living, and lots of berries)
Adult: Wintering by Kate Moses (a sorta fiction sorta true biography of Sylvia Plath's life a few months before her death. Why you would enjoy it; Sylvia Plath having deep chilling thoughts and being quirkily domestic)

I would recommend "The Lovely Bones" It's one of those books that I could NOT put down. Also, "Marley and Me" is another good one! And anything by David Sedaris is fantastic!
Hope you enjoy :-)

The House That Sailed Away. It's just the best book ever.

Fair skinned girls like me and you should always use a sunscreen (on face, neck, arms, hands, and other exposed areas) every time we are in the sun. I look to be 25, even though I'm a bit older, and I owe a lot of that to sunscreen!
I also like to use a pumice stone on my feet at night in the shower, slather some nice lotion on my feet, and then sometimes put socks on, and go to sleep. In the morning your feet will be soft and aglow!
Kind of a silly one, but I like to sleep on my back rather on my stomach- I wake up with a much less wrinkled/puffy face:)
There you are, my beauty hints of the day.

My favourite book is "Bel Canto" by Ann Patchett. I worked in a book store when I lived in the UK and a lady told me it was her favourite book I really did not pay that much attention to her comment however a couple of years later I picked it up and read it - like I read it in one sitting. I don't normally do this but it is so beautiful. Enjoy! I think it is awesome that you are giving treats away.

Your comment giveaways are the best! You always have interesting suggestions for comment topics. I don't have any beauty tips, but I would recommend The Time Traveler's Wife. I think they're going to be making a movie out of it soon. It was hard to get into at first, but when I was done, I was depressed for like a week because I missed the characters so much.

Remembering how much you loved the Bridge to Terabithia and the Pan's Labyrinth I would recommend The Book of Lost Things by John Connoly.
Margie Oomen · July 09, 2007 at 05:01 PM
My favorite book from childhood was "King of the Dollhouse" (can't remember the author) and "The Search for Delicious" by Natalie Babbitt. My current favorite book is "The Pictorial Guide to Modern Home Knitting" (from 1939!). Lots of gorgeous patterns that will make you want to learn to knit if you don't know how already. And I just read Lorrie Moore's "Birds of America," which I highly recommend. And I haven't read it yet, but I've heard that Jean-Pierre Jeunet is directing the movie adaptation of "Life of Pi," so I might check that book out soon, too.
And I'm cleaning out my workspace too! But with the help of my toddler, it might take a little longer than a weekend. Lots of "Look, Mommy! I found another ball of yarn. Can I throw it?"
Hope I win, coz I adore your artwork! You can reach me at popmaw (at) gmail.com

I haven't been much into reading lately...I know it's summertime and just calls to be sitting in a hammock somewhere reading away the hours...but well, paycheck's are calling! Love Anais Nin's erotica stories and always turn to my grandmother's childhood storybooks for both the fantastic fairy tales and illustrations...."My Bookhouse" series by Olive Beaupre Miller...my favorite is East o the Sun and West o the Moon (vol 3?). I think there's about 7 volumes in the series from about the 1920's-30's....just your time era!

I think I mentioned in the film post that I find it painful to list my favourite things and books are especially hard for me because I LOVE pretty much everything about them. So I will just say that I just finished reading Half of a Yellow Sun by... Chimamanda... Er, it's a very long name but I'm sure you could find out if you really wanted to. Anyway, it was a really fantastic book about something I knew nothing about (civil war in Nigeria/Biafra) and I've been thinking about it lots since. My sister gave me the book on the condition that I would pass it onto someone else when I was done with it (I am a notorious book hoarder who is fast running out of shelving) so I will be posting it on to my friend Lorna this week with similar instructions for her. By the way, bookcrossing (www.bookcrossing.com) is such a fun idea especially if, like me, you add a touch of espionage to the whole thing...! Sorry - you asked for book recommendations and I left you a book.

I've been into listening to audio books while I sew...a good place for them is Audible.com - they seem to be cheaper than I-Tunes. I tried my local library as you can download audiobooks for free but alas, I have a Mac and you can only use Windows for downloads. So I'm stuck with buying them.....let's see I just listened to a couple books by Emily Giffin - they were good.
Just got my order from Etsy - LOVE my hedgie shirt ;-)!!!

MAC all the way. I heart Makeup Art Cosmetics, especially as a very very pale girl. Wear 70 sunscreen, drink lots of water, avoid all smoke, stay lovely and wrinkle-free.
I'm currently reading a couple books to teach myself Swahili (going to Kenya next month to help orphans + AIDS victims). The Phantom Tollbooth is a great children's book, that is still a great read in adulthood.

Just like with the movies, I see so many of my favorite books listed, which means the recommendations are probably something I will heed... but I couldn't pick a favorite book. The other thousand of them would revolt in the middle of the night and smother me or something.
So how about five people I'd invite to dinner:
1) Amelia Earhart
2) Neil Gaiman
3) Philip Pullman
4) The guy who owns the J. Peterman catalog (the real one)
5) Ursula LeGuin
That'd be some good conversation, I imagine.

my (strange) beauty tip, if your face is feeling a bit not too good and your moisturizers not cutting it or you've run out... splash (in a restrained fashion) some milk on your face, leave it to dry... will feel all tight and facemask-like, then wash off, cheap baby soft skin.

I think the best beauty tip i have is to enjoy life and live it. it makes everything beautiful and brings out the beauty in everything. savor moments & sounds, touch things as you pass them, smell things in the air. go to the farmers market and buy things you have never cooked before. leave little notes in library books when you return them, leave coins and dollars in places only children would think to look or notice... yeah i think that is the best.

boy, i liked the time travelers wife, but not enough to rate it as one of my favorite books. i absolutely loved the lovely bones, which they are making into a movie. it is so interestingly written, with the point of view the main character in heaven, and i loved that the point of it was NOT a whodunit--you were told right away but the other characters in the story don't know. brilliant! another of my favorite books is the boy who loved ann frank, which wonders about what impact loving ann frank was on peter. it's fiction, but is meant to read like a nonfiction. also, the kite runner was absolutely amazing--horrifying, upsetting, beautiful, wise....just wonderful! i truly could go on and on about books...i have taken to keeping a little booklog with a summary of each book i read. i wish i would have done this years and years ago. raysongrrl@yahoo.com

You would love Second Hand by Michael Zadoorian. It's a light fictional read about thrifting! I blogged about it here:

The only beauty secret I have is this Oatmeal, Milk & Honey body polish from this online store in Florida. After buying it as a gift for my friend, she said it changed her life. :)

My #1 beauty tip is to read Color Yourself Beautiful and find what colors look best on you. This seriously changed my life. Everytime I wore brown, I looked and felt sick. I discovered that brown is not my color haven't worn it since. When I wear my correct colors, I look and even feel better. Take care.

Beauty secret!
I use the products fromhttp://www.moogoo.com.au/ they are incredible! I had awful dermatitis on my legs but since I started using this cream I have no dermatitis at all! After about 10 years of itching and using crap creams from the doctors, this moogoo stuff cured me yay! Although I don't think they ship overseas yet ;_;

It's a children's book..i think there are more than one..but the one we had growing up was about the four seasons and what these little mice have to do to prepare and enjoy them. the illustrations are fantastic.. i've been meaning to find it (it's packed at the moment i think) and scan it..if i can do that soon enough i'll let you know. i think you'd really love it!

For books, I absolutely love The Unbearable Lightness of Being - Milan Kundera, and Dandelion Wine - Ray Bradbury. The first is the book. I am recommending to everyone, it is so lovely.
Beauty tips, water and lots of it. It makes one's skin so nice and clear...the only downside is lots of potty breaks ;-)

Hi there,
I haven't really read any book lately, just started on Angels and Demons by Dan Brown, a sequel or such of the DaVinci Code.
But, I'm so excited about the new and final Harry Potter book. I've read all six, and I hope the last one won't be a disappointment. Oh, I can't wait! ;p

Life of Pi and Memoirs of a Geisha are two of my favourite books.
I'd also like to highly recommend a great Canadian band called METRIC - they are FANTASTIC.
As for a beauty secret/tip - a good homemade facial exfoliant (sp?) is some slightly whipped egg whites, a bit of honey and some granulated sugar - it's moisturizing, cheap and works just as well if not better than store-bought stuff (I always whip up a batch when I'm baking cuz all the stuff's out anyways :)
Suzanne · July 09, 2007 at 11:11 PM

Beauty tip-Moisturize often and stay out of the sun! And Arsoa Queen Silver Soap is amazing.

Lori · July 09, 2007 at 11:25 PM
Oh goody... this is fun!
I highly recommend 'Me & Emma'... a tragic and stunning book. I literally gasped with surprise at the end... sooo good!
Beauty secret...hmmm? Well this is common knowledge, but never pump your mascara wand in the tube (dries it out)... and always keep a tissue on hand to take the excess off the wand. It will glide on beautifully.
I also recommend pouring a handful of sugar in your palm adding a drop or two of peppermint oil (or lavender oil if you prefer) and rub both hands together. Works on feet and legs too.

Hello miss, as usual I have input. I say Kiehls has the BEST skincare, but I admittedly in my middle age also use proactive, never been prone to breakouts, but here at mid-thirty and a girl has to do something. So I use both lines. Sigh. Fav book, Prayer for Owen Meany. Always. And I constantly re-read my Alice and Lion, Witch. Other fav are the Dark Series by Philip Pullman. Quite sad I heard they will try to make them into the cinema soon. Again- sigh. Hope you are well, and hope you DO PLEASE for you- watch the movie suggestion I made as the Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Umbrellas are pretty poignant right now for some reason. Cheers Em!

I can't recommend a book to read, but one with great illustrations that was my childhood favorite. It's titled " If Jesus came to my house". It wasn't until I was much, much older that I understood it was supposed to be a halo around his head and he wasn't an astronaut!!

Broiled salmon, rice, and steamed broccoli (or sometimes asparagus) is one of our favourite meals of all time. We pour melted butter on top, add some dill and lemon pepper, and broil it for approx. 5-6 minutes on each side. It is so good that I am rarely ever as pleased when I order salmon at a restaurant.
P.S. One of my all-time favourite books in this world is "The Neverending Story" by Michael Ende. Don't know if you grew up with the movie like I did, but as much as I loved the movie, it doesn't do the book justice. As a child, I remember being so disappointed at the end of the movie when the narrator says that Bastian made many more wishes and had many more amazing adventures, "but that's another story." Well, in the book, you get to find out what they are and accompany Bastian on his many adventures. It's WON-DER-FUL!!

My fave beauty tip (which people who know me would find hilarious i even write that since I barely wear makeup)...Keep a stash of those cheap-o disposable shadow applicators around, and when you get that splotch of stray mascara on your lid or under your eyes (you know, when you time that sneeze just right, like when you have just applied the wet gooey mascara to both eyes!) grab the little wand and a little water or makeup remover later, splotch is gone. Works better than a q-tip too, no stray cotton threads.

In the 80's, Barbie magazine did an interview with Soleil Moon Frye (Punky Brewster) and she suggested rubbing your feet with vaseline and then wearing socks to bed. I've been doing it every since. It works pretty good. The problem comes in summer when I never wear socks.

wow, 182 comments already - and that was when I started reading them! Who knows how many you have by now!
a lot of good book recommendations here. I have to second Time Traveler's Wife and Virginia Woolf (I'll see your Mrs. Dalloway and raise you a To The Lighthouse - really, who can choose between the two?), and Edith Wharton's Age of Innocence is brilliant. I have a copy of Don Quixote stashed for reading presently...so let me give you two recommendations that are fresh, from me.
WB Yeats' collection of Irish Fairy and Folk Tales. Great, short reads before bed, very interesting, the product of his (and his colleagues') years of research and collection of Irish folk culture at the turn of the 20th Century.
Also, try Robert MacLiam Wilson's "Eureka Street" for a mix of cheeky Trainspotting-esque sass with some heart-rending tragedy, and some elegiac musings on cities as living organisms. My tip: Read chapter 10 (very softly) to a loved one in bed as you are falling asleep. But only Chapter 10, when you get to it. It was a happy accident for me, but I couldn't have planned it better.
best wishes!

as far as beauty tips...i always remember cream on my face morning and night. oh, and a funny one...if you have no blush, just pinch your cheeks twice on each side.

Hello, love your artwork.
Recommended book: The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor. It is lovely retelling of Alice in Wonderland.

#1 Beauty Secret is Cetaphyl Cleanser. Oh so gentle on sensitive skin. Can be used with or without water.
#2 Favorite Book is Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. So insightful.
thanks Emily!

Love the jar storage system. My fav as well. The only beauty tip I have for you is: sunscreen. And maybe give your eyes a rest every few minutes from reading all of your comments! :)

I too am a Harry Potter geek. But, speaking of geeks, one of my all time favorite books is 'Geek Love' by Katherine Dunn. It's weird, creepy, and oddly moving. Everyone must read it! I also love any of Gabriel García Márquez's work.

I love the way you have all the little bits and pieces stored in jars. So pretty looking and easy to use, if only I had the space and jars! My favourite recent read was "Nights At The Circus" by Angela Carter, absolutely amazing.

You're making me want to re-organize my studio too, since yours looks so fantastic! :)
Good books...
Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer (great metaphors about art & life, such a unique writer)
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott (meant to be a book about writing, but anyone creative would have so much to gain from reading this)
Hmm...I think I might re-read one of these sometime soon...
Tessa · July 10, 2007 at 01:48 PM
My biggest beauty secret is an old fashioned early night!
I am reading "I Capture the Castle" by Dodie Smith at the moment and love it.
Liz · July 10, 2007 at 02:04 PM
A good trick with Burt's Bee's shimmer lip stuff, is... I use it on my cheeks like blush. Nice rosy glow, no weird powder on my face.
Cute! (the Rhubarb is particularly rosey)
And I am SURE you've seen by now, You Me and Everyone we Know.
So good.
Also if you haven't read it, The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman. They are making a movie this winter, but the books are THE BEST!

My favorite books remain to be classics that everyone has read throughout high school and college. Robert Frost makes me cry.

Looks pretty with the jars! Would you mind if I´d copy this at home? I suppose it would be good for inspirations.. T-Shirt-Voting completed by the way. ;)
Irina · July 11, 2007 at 08:56 PM
I know that I am too late for the contest, but what I really wanted to know was how you secured your ribbon/ricrac type notions to the cards? Did you tape them down? Pin them? I love the jar idea, but whenever I try to wrap my ribbons around a card, they just kind of flop around and don't stay and if I use tape, the adhesive sticks to the fibers and if I try to pin, they just fall out.
Any tips would be appreciated!
