There's too much love!

February 08, 2007 · The Wonderful Name Project

That is a title of a favorite Belle & Sebastian song...and is certainly the case around here the last 24 hours! Goodness Gracious, I am absolutely astonished and also so pleased with the general enthusiasm for interesting and wonderful names. To be truthful with you, I was almost afraid when I dreamed up the little "contest idea" that it might be too silly, or dorky.

I was trying very ardently to respond to most of you, but I must confess that I mostly peetered out around comment #200...and at the time of this post, there are nearly 400! Oh my.

SO!
My plan for today/tonight is to "stay neutral", which, happily, corresponds with my clothing choices for today:

Some_girls_649

welllll...mostly.

Some_girls_650

Tomorrow, however, I will make up my darn mind.
It will be SO difficult, so to make things a little bit easier on myself (and because, well, I was expecting maybe 30 entries...never hundreds!) I'm going to still have the numero uno favorite...but then I will also have 5 "second place" names. And those 5 folks will receive a surprise print from my shop...and probably a Valentine, too...I'm saucy that way. Valentines all over the place.

Also, I suppose there must be a cut-off point, though I hate to put an end to the good name-bounty...why don't we just say that any comments after # 410 are very welcome (what a resource we've compiled!) but won't be eligible for my very prestigious and utterly un-diplomatic and TOTALLY subjective, but loving, judging.
I will also be preserving that most wonderful arsenal of comments with its own whole category-link on the right side of the page...something like "Wonderful Names" or "I Heart Names", as well as of course scribbling down many for my own amusement/pleasure.

Now I will leave you and go back to the task at hand (deliberation, painting, and Grey Gardens), after just enjoying a wonderful dinner with my sweet friends Andy + Sara (who, by the way, made her own name post in tribute but has disqualified herself from the running...which is lucky for you guys, because Zippy Morocco is almost TOO good). We had this very simple and very tasty soup for dinner...and what a cute site! They let you choose what recipe card size to print out! And they let you adjust the amount of servings. I'm dazzled.

I just got in from a long long day of pottery making. So tired. Decided to pop in. You are darling as usual. You deserve the break and decision making for tomorrow. Well, you are officially not the silly or dorky contest creator!! Holy Toledo Bandido!!! Fantastic my dear. Love that book!!! I must order it! I spent a small portion of the morning in the most special book shop in the planet. Will post about it manana!!! Good luck!

Wowsah kasowa! That's a lot of comments! Good luck with the decision. You're a doll!

Kim · February 09, 2007 at 12:48 AM

Best of luck with the decision making! No pressure... there's only 400+ of us, and most presented more than a few names! That's like, 800 names to choose from! Yeah, you're going to need a cricket...

Oh, and I LOVE that you're never looking directly at the camera! I think you are absolutely gorgeous though, no matter the angle you choose to be in! And let me just say that it is not easy taking a photo of yourself (especially if you don't know how to work the timer, if it even exists). I tried for the first time today, for blogging-slash-posting purposes, and the whole time I thought to myself, "How the heck does Emily pull this off so effortlessly?!" It must be that innate talent manifesting itself through every medium and/or vehicle of art you touch!

Beth · February 09, 2007 at 01:23 AM

That's some contest - over 400 plus entries. That's alot of names.

Rachael · February 09, 2007 at 02:09 AM

Oh my blessed computer! I tried most of the day to leave a comment but to no avail.... Okay so I am way past the cut off point but even so here are a few names for your perusal!

Philomina Winifred (First name is a lovely irish lady I teach, middle name I think just goes perfectly)
Una Hickey (another I irish lass)

Megan Rose (the name I would give my own wee lass if I were to ever have one)

Oh and I adore Fox in the snows coat - I have to make one for myself - red, with peter pan collar and oversized buttons - precious!

Gillian · February 09, 2007 at 04:27 AM

The Devil and Daniel Johnston, is another obscure great documentary.

julie · February 09, 2007 at 08:21 AM

Holy Moly that's a ton of comments!! You're Famous!! Can I please tell you that Broccoli and Cheddar is my all time favorite soup of all...hope you enjoyed it!

Have fun deliberating...I'm sure there will be six very happy people to have Black Apple Valentines this year!

Mary Contrary · February 09, 2007 at 08:29 AM

The Devil and Daniel Johnston is indeed great. And I love it when you post pics of your adorable wardrobe; I'm always inspired.

Anne · February 09, 2007 at 08:34 AM

goog luck with the judging, I have no idea how you will choose....there are so many!

also, your shoes are so cute they make my eyes hurt...um in a good way.

every girl needs red shoes.

stilettoheights · February 09, 2007 at 08:56 AM

Good luck. After seeing the amount of names I got, I told my beau that I wouldn't want to be in your shoes, except that you have a great collection. Oh yeah, and I saw Grey Gardens, the musical, this last year in NY and I think it was the only musical that I really, really loved.

Katie · February 09, 2007 at 09:27 AM

synchronicity yet again! thank you for that recipe link! my girl loves broccoli-cheddar soup and i was wishing for an easy recipe yesterday when i was hoping to find some readymade at trader joe's...

patricia · February 09, 2007 at 09:32 AM

Lollipoplegz Lamont!! Love that name.

Sara · February 09, 2007 at 09:52 AM

I always love your wistful outfits and I know you're in the south, which is reportedly warmer than here, but everytime I see you in clothes like you're wearing today when my bedroom window is caked in icey frost, I shiver a bit. :D

Sarah · February 09, 2007 at 10:27 AM

I'm on a waiting list for Grey Gardens! On the one hand, yay because that means that a lot of people are seeing it but on the other hand, boo-urns because I'm WAITING.

kiwi · February 09, 2007 at 11:10 AM

Emily, just coming out of the woodwork for a moment to say i find your blog to be most inspiring and usually my favorite, most relatable read of my long sitting at a desk pretending to be busy whilst perusing all manner of blogs day. that's all!

dawn · February 09, 2007 at 11:27 AM

I love the outfit! Great shoes. What a great response to your name game!
Grey Gardens is quite bizarre. I first saw it on BBC Four (it was already a half hour in) and thought I'd stumbled upon some strange play. I still find it hard to believe. I'd love to see the musical.

I would agree, a very prestigious contest indeed, good luck with the very difficult and important task ahead. Wearing cute red shoes should help with all necessary decision making.

heather · February 09, 2007 at 11:58 AM

can i ask you a personal question? do you always wear skirts and dresses or do you sometimes wear pants? i only ask because this morning i decided i wanted to put together an emily inspired outfit and i felt that required a skirt. now, who is the dorky one?

risa · February 09, 2007 at 12:17 PM

i love your shoes, where did you get them? i hope you don't say anthropologie! cuz i can't afford that. anyways, i love your art and your style as well, it's fun dropping by to see what you've created and what you are wearing, you have such great taste!

Lily · February 09, 2007 at 01:37 PM

i was hoping it was'nt too late to add my name to the contest.
here is my bestest galpals's scrumptious name:
Honeybelles Beauchamps Fitz Hollingsworth-Huntington III.

Tricia · February 09, 2007 at 01:41 PM

Man I do not want to be in your shoes right now trying to decide on a name. :)

Marilyn · February 09, 2007 at 01:44 PM

Hey there! I have those shoes too! Never worn them with knees socks though - they look great on ya!

Melanie Carmichael · February 09, 2007 at 02:59 PM

I watched the View today, they had the actress who plays both characters in the Grey Gardens on Broadway. She was giving analysis about their psyche and why they chose to remain in the house that was all their identity. Quite interesting. I've rented the movie as well.
