...And that's all that I can be.
I'm sad and surprised that someone would leave a comment (see comments from my last post) critiquing my personality. This blog is my personal (read, non-objective) place to show-and-tell about art, craft, clothes, food, films, design, etc. In person & on here, I'm by turns snarky, self-effacing, enchanted and enthused...and I have zero desire to edit that here. In "real-life" I am a stalwartly honest person, and so my blog life is extremely forthright as well. If someone finds me "snobby" or "self-righteous" or (worst of all, wink wink) a "hipster", I hope that they just won't bother with the blog. And, in all honesty, I really don't think I'm all that bad.
Every day I feel so grateful and overwhelmed with all of the friends, kindred spirits, and like-minded gals I meet through this silly blog. I don't have that many friends in my regular-life who are interested in things like buttons, illustrative artwork, vintage everything, domestic doo-dads, etc. so it is really a wonderful thing for me to be able to share those things with you guys, and also have a place to discuss my personal work/shop.
The world can be so isolating, and it amazing to have a little pocket of space where it feels anything but lonely.
xoxo, big time

Really, hmm. Now I don't think the bloggy world has to be one big lovefest or anything but if you don't like what you're reading, change the channel. Just my two cents. And I don't know about the snobby, or self-righteous, or hipster-y you but I do know that I think you are completely darling for what that's worth.
Mama Urchin · January 19, 2007 at 03:47 PM
Emily,
Ignore people like that. Why did she even bother to comment at all? Relish in who you are and embrace your indiviuality. To me your "little world" is refreshing, inspiring and delightful. Seems to me that somebody is letting the "green-eyed monster" out through words. P.S. Check your etsy conversations.

Hullo,
I found my way to your blog this winter and was instantly enchanted by your wall painting of trees. I've been dropping by since then, and I have to say that I always enjoy your writing and dedication to making even the simple things in life beautiful. So, bravo to you for knowing not to pay attention to the nay-sayers, because whenever you decide to be yourself and nevermind the mass opinion, there is always going to be someone who thinks you're a snob.
P.S. Carnivale rocks the Depression! - have you signed the petition urging them to bring it back or at least make a movie?

oh, people are weird. Personally your blog is so cute and quirky and honest and fun, I find myself wanting to be you when I grow up.
Sadly I am 35. Good thing I believe in reincarnation ;)

I’m reminded of a post you wrote quite a while back when you were living in the city…a day when some guys on the street were shouting their comments…I think you noted a friend’s blog..she was talking about decorating her apartment to make it her little safe place in the world…Anyway, it struck me that this person’s comment would just shatter that little bubble of safety that I draw around myself from this world. Blogs are a public way of sharing our private lives, but that should be respected. My take is that people strive to discover their true selves at some point in their lives. It seems crazy, but sometimes it takes a while to become comfortable in our own skin. To me you exude confidence and honesty and enjoy life and the people and things in it. Enjoy this and keep being you. Frankly, she wouldn’t keep coming back if she wasn’t intrigued by this in you. I can remember when I was a child and a girl was really nasty to me at school. My Mom told me that the girl was just jealous of something I was getting to do. When exactly do we get off this playground of life? Anyway, I love the blogging world. I too have very few people in my “real life” that get my love for creating, photography, clothes, thrifting, buttons, cute fabric, vintage finds, etc. I’m so thankful for this little world I have found online with so many kindred spirits to encourage and inspire!

"Being a nerd, which is to say going too far and caring too much about a subject, is the best way to make friends I know." - Sarah Vowell
Leaving the comment probably left her with an equally bad feeling as it left you. It turns out that making character assessments from on high is never as good feeling as you think it's gonna be in your head.

I think the appropriate comment back to the comment bomber would be 'Fiddle dee dee'.
Sticks and stones, love, sticks and stones.
KiWi · January 19, 2007 at 04:15 PM
Delurking to agree with all of the above! I love your style and your forthrightness and general refusal to be anyone but yourself. Would that we could all be so pleased to be who we are! There's a place for constructive criticism, but back-handed compliments and bubble-bursting aren't part of that at all. Keep on being you, dear. We love you for it.
Rita · January 19, 2007 at 04:31 PM
You are what you are - charming, enchanting, and talented.
If that makes you a 'hipster' to some, then so be it - you know, and the rest of us know, that you are so much more than that.
marielle · January 19, 2007 at 04:33 PM
Just like a quote I have on my blog -
"I do not understand how anyone can live without some small place of enchantment to turn to." Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings
I think you are just darling and the thought you are, what did she write, snobby, um, has never crossed my mind. Besides, I thought the whole idea of a blog was to write about yourself and the world you live in, the things you do.... hmmm, am I wrong?
XOXOXOXO

Actually, it's your honesty and somewhat lack of "editing" that I really love and admire about your blog.
I know this is just a comment among many (you have a whole troupe of admirers), but I read so many blogs where everyone just has the most perfect of perfect lives, nothing ever goes wrong, and they're never a bit..down, or blah, or any of the full range of human emotions besides blissfully happy.
You're very beautiful, and very talented, and sure and proud of your own style, which, by the way, I love. I've never read anything by you that reflects what the other lady wrote.
So, uh, you win at life, me thinks.
Vanda · January 19, 2007 at 04:43 PM
Putting one's self "out there", for want of a better phrase, is one of the hardest things to do in this life. Creating a 'personal' space that is available to all and sundry on this world wide web of ours, invites viewers/readers positive and otherwise - which is an uncomfortable reality of public domains. I think it takes great courage to carry on regardless of this fact.
I think you have created an amazing, honest and self-effacing insight into you life, loves and passions and I think your energy and enthusiasm for things you love is a great thing. This is a strength to be admired, not criticised.
anonymous · January 19, 2007 at 04:43 PM
A blog is about the writer and what the writer loves. We love what we know about you and are enchanted, interested, and enjoying you & your words very much...Obviously you are a really powerful person because you made a huge impact on someone else, jealousy is a very bad thing, very bad indeed. Hmm, I feel sorry for people like that. But, on to brighter tales...Please tell us more about your lovely treasures, art and more about you!!!!xoxoxo

Hi Emily,
I've been reading your blog for quite a while although I don't comment - I'm a bit shy :). But after reading that silly and spiteful comment from some silly girl, I just wanted to let you know from a fellow dork, how much I love your blog. I love to make things, to create, especially clothes; I spend hours crafting with the nieces and then, when I have a moment, I check what my blog "friends" are up to! Also, please post more clothes, altered or otherwise - did I say I love clothes...Thank you for blogging Emily - virtual hugs, Maria

Oh, Emily! Just ignore this person. They obviously wanted to get a rise out of you. Everyone, unfortunately, gets a negative comment eventually. I think it shows chracter on your part that you left it on your post instead of deleting it and hiding it away. But I feel sad that there are people like that...
Persephone Snyder · January 19, 2007 at 04:55 PM
I began reading your blog about 3 or 4 months ago. (Actually, my first time commenting. I just have to show my support!) I feel bad that someone could say something so vicious and rude.
I ADORE reading your blog because it is so up-lifting. I have to check... pretty much daily... it's an amusing read! You've helped inspire me with my personal blog, and my etsy shop.
So, thank you for all the wonderful ideas and notions you have posted :) Keep your personality shinning through your writing!

I pop by to see what you are up to most days. Thank you for putting this blog together, it is a lovely little world you share. My favorite posts are the ones you write about clothes. I too, love clothes and the fun involved in making them perfect.

Yeah, it's all been said. I know it's incredibly silly, but I also don't have many 'real life' friends who appreciate the small, the historical, or the cute. I often feel that I'm too old to be so concerned with my aesthetic surroundings but I always feel better when I visit your site and read what you have to say about the function of creating your own world. Your blog is a daily highlight for me and even though we really don't interact I consider you a friend.
But that's all been said before--no one pointed out the logic flaw in this woman's comment--she accuses you of limiting yourself, which I just can't wrap my head around! Your entire aesthetic is incredibly layered and interested, it's one of a kind.
Cirilia · January 19, 2007 at 05:37 PM

Dear Emily,
I've just stumbled over your blog and I love it! The way your walls are all different, bold colours (mine are all white BLAH!). Your personal aesthetic, just lovely. Everything's been said in the above comments, but I am going to re-iterate- "Sticks and stones love, sticks and stones." (It sounds really cool when you say it in a Jack Sparrow accent, too!)
Rock on Emily!

Dearest Emily,
I read your blog daily, worry when you vanish for a few days, and wish I had a younger sister like you. (I do have two perfectly nice younger sisters, but neither of them quite "gets" me--I'm definitely the family "oddball"). My favorite thing to do at the babysitter's when I was a kid was to play with the buttons in her button tin--I especially liked to pick out all the buttons with rhinestones. So I guess I've been a nerd since childhood! Anyway we think you're great, and wished you lived close enough to come over for tea. (And advice--Henry has informed me that he wants me to paint trees on his wall "like Emily Black Apple's" when I finish stripping all the wallpaper off. Yikes!)
Sending big hugs from MA,
Kate, Nora & Henry

Don't worry about other people decide you are. They are going to do that anyway, and worrying about it robs you of your right to be honest and have fun. Focus on people who like you instead, since they're the ones with taste.

I personally find your blog one of the nicest, most cheerful and creatively stimulating ones on the internet! You are a very unique gal, all your "quirks" and such add up to make one very beautiful and talented young lady!! Don't worry about people who say these mean things--they aren't worth it. Someone accused me of copying them in my blog comments recently. They also got a friend to leave a snarky comment telling me that my work was unoriginal. I messaged them and explained that I'd never seen their work before. There were similarities, but really minor so as not to warrant a 'copying' tag. After messaging them, they wrote back saying that they didn't really think I had copied them and that they were having a bad day. No mention of 'sorry I upset you so much', nuthin.
All this is to say that people can be very strange. Don't let this one get to you.
Shell · January 19, 2007 at 06:23 PM
I really enjoy and appreciate your writing and your vibe. I also have respect fot the fact that you've not edited this seemingly negative comment and given us as readers a chance to think about it. And as a result just look at all the positive comments and hearts that have come as a result!
Keep writing I'm addicted! haha
andrea · January 19, 2007 at 06:27 PM
I suspect that the negative poster just wanted attention to her (poor) knock-off artsy blog. The fact that she also has an etsy shop with stuff for sale just seems like too much of a coincidence. I think she was trying to direct your readers to her blog. Lame.
MamaDona · January 19, 2007 at 06:38 PM
My Dear Emily,
Please don't take negative people to heart... they are sad creatures unhappy in their own life that only deserve our pity.

Cheers,

just keep letting the little bird in your heart sing it's sweet tune, my dear. This world is full of people that need to put others back in(what they deem) their place in order to feel better about their own inadequacies, therefore really saying more about the person making the obnoxious comments that it does the person being discussed. I *love* reading your posts and looking at all your gorgeous images. xoxo big time back at ya!
Kylie · January 19, 2007 at 06:40 PM
This made me annoyed enough to de-lurk, so you know its big. ;)
I actually had to go back and re-read your post to try and understand the mean comment. Now, its kind of obvious: witty, clever girls who live outside the box have always been seen as "snobby". People are mean when they are jealous, and I'm sure all these positive comments about you won't make that affliction any better.
Love your aesthetic, and I totally agreed about the *little too modern* stuff. Your work rocks, and so does this blog.

Keep on rockin'

Emily,
As I sit here at my offide job, wearing a "I Love Nerds" t-shirt under my thrifted, vintage argyle sweater, I feel compelled to tell you that I think you are positively swell. I read your blog because it's got an authentic voice. you share what you are passionate about and are disarmingly nonchalant about how talented you really are. No worries about that horrid little comment maker. She probably thinks a hipster is a type of jeans-lol. Keep being you, hon. Tons of us appreciate you for exactly who you are.

Oh my goodness, it's funny how the world goes round and round. I, like some others commenting, was also bullied by a heckler. I got sad, responded, then deleted it all. Basically, it sucks. But more so, I was pissed that I LET it piss me off. But, it was good for me in the end...reminded me to keep trying to "get thicker skin". It takes courage to put yourself and your life out there. (I think most of the hecklers are much too scared to even try.)

Its funny...I was reading a passage in this book today about how one shouldn't fight anger with anger, or hatred with hatred, but instead with love.
Its hard...and its been a challenge for me to apply it to my life, but I think there's a certain truth to it.
Sometimes, when people feel the need to be so outwardly insensitive and rude, I try to wonder how sad they must feel inside to need to do something like that to make themselves feel better. All we can do is hope that one day, they won't feel so bitter towards someone who is different from themselves.
I love your blog, and please dont let those words get you down. There are so many things to be happy about. Keep doing what you're doin!

This is a classic example of the teeter-tooter theory. Some people think that if they push you down, they will go up. But happily, the world doesn't operate that way.
The world is a big merry-go-round and the more positive pushes you give to others, the faster you will fly when it is your turn on the big wheel of life.
You are an original, engaging, nerdy writer...and you are perfect just as you are. Your cleverness, compassion and thoughtful view of the world are what keeps the legions of us coming back for more.

But, I was thinking about paths and destiny and signs that show us that we are doing the right thing with our little lives. Look at all this love, had someone not posted something harsh then all the love would have never been put down like this, in black and white. And, wow, look at all of this love!!! I know you must feel kind of invaded because your blog is you, it is like a bad stranger in your home. However, you truly show your strength by allowing us all to voice our opinions and talk openly about this. It strikes a chord of things we all have probably been through, hence, the loads of compassion. More huggable clouds your way. And, shiny paths shining through...
Vanessa · January 19, 2007 at 11:44 PM
Emily,
Please ignore people like that. I think all of us geeky, crafty, creative types run into folks once in a while that shoot us down with negative words. Best not to listen to them. They just don't get it, and frankly, they never will.
Your blog, since I've uncovered it, has been a daily joy in my life. What a comfort to read and see proof that there is another girlie out there just like me! She's crafty (and crazily so), a splendid artist, oh-so-stylish, and quite the trend-setter (but not one to follow the trends--no, the trends follow HER). You, my dear, are an inspiration. While others may look to the "great masters" for divine artistic intervention, I look to you.
Rock on, Emily. Rock on.
--Michelle :)

I think you are just about the biggest-hearted, warmest, most inclusive person in craft-blog-dom. Your openness and honesty make this blog feel so welcoming ... even when you aren't necessarily feeling cheery. Obviously, Anna just felt left out and didn't realize your arms are open to all of us. Even her. Especially her. Because this is the place, more than any other, where those of us that feel a little out of place elsewhere, will always feel right at home.
futuregirl · January 20, 2007 at 12:19 AM
You know what? We love you! You just keep on being you. You do your thing, which is wonderful. I for one am happy that you share your life and your unique vision (i.e. your opinions, your art, your aesthetic) with us.
Maritza · January 20, 2007 at 12:30 AM
The "hipster" scene is just as judgmental as any other group and some people just get miffed and confuse the genuine article (ie. you) with the followers. I have friends who are crazy and different and dorky and I have friends who just try to be that way to seem more interesting. Just think of it as a big misunderstanding. Somehow she missed what you're really about.

OMG! What happened! The comment ABOVE the one that said my name was mine. I posted that it was cool that he got excited about the lunch tray and that you were a lucky girl. The comment that had my name on it was NOT mine! I would NEVER say something like that! I can't believe this would happen. How is this possible?

Dear Emily~ You are young enough to be this 45 year olds daughter and I adore your blog, your personality that comes out and everything you share. Your art is devine. I find you to be like a little breath of fresh air, and I just love looking at all of the things you find and all the websites you share. Sounds to me like someone may have been a bit jealous of your style.

Poo-poo to that person, whoever it was. The rest of us just adore you!

Dear lovely girl
I feel lucky to have come across you site and your work- at your age your accomplishments are a rare thing, and your generosity of spirit rarer still. If nothing else that mean-spirited, dismissive post gave lots of people- friends, acquaintances and strangers like myself the excuse to let you know how special you are to so many folks!

Hi Emily!
I say "Ditto!" as well to all the good feelings from the above comments. I really enjoy your blog, both in content and aesthetics. You know who you are and that's a wonderful thing.
Not everyone is going to like us or our work or what we say or do. But we can choose our actions and our reactions to negative criticism. I once read that everyone we come in contact with should be looked upon as a teacher. Although at times that seems a crazy thought, it does help to put things in perspective. And if that doesn't work, just remember that every party has a pooper.

I have always enjoyed reading and seeing how you are doing and what you are up to...it makes ME feel more normal and at ease...like you were saying about not knnowing too many people with the smae interests. WE are the lucky ones to get to peek inside your life, and thank you for granting that. I hope you have a great weekend!

It amazes me that someone would critique you on your own blog. Do these people have nothing better to do?
Blog reading should be fun and inspiring and people CHOOSE to do it. If you are a hipster then well join the club, because what can we do! She is jealous of your wonderful talent and amazing personality.
Jessica · January 20, 2007 at 09:35 AM
Emily, my friend Michelle and I read your blog everyday. We always say, "If Emily lived by us, we'd make sure she was our friend." We like you because you are 100% authentic and original. So keep doing what you're doing and ignore the small minded. Remember that real artists always have to deal with detractors and this person probably won't be the last, but you will just keep being true to yourself and your art and keep on. Many best wishes!!!
tiffany · January 20, 2007 at 09:44 AM
Wow, this is the 2nd post I've read this week by one of my beloved blog buddies that had to address someone's snarky & rude comments. I do not understand why people feel like they have the right to criticize & act negatively to someone they do not know. If you don't like what someone writes on their blog, DON'T READ IT! How hard is that? But my thoughts towards those who do this is that it's their loss. If they are so unhappy in their own lives that they feel empowered by cutting others down, then that is their problem. They are missing out on so much happiness in this otherwise not so happy society that we live in. So cheers to being yourself. That's why all of us love you & come here daily to peek into your little world Em. Keep up the fabulously YOU blogging & creating!!! (can you tell this fires me up???)

Oh, Emily...it's been a whirlwind already for 2007, huh? But I have to agree with every heart here, esp. Kristy of Vintage Pleasure when she poignantly said "...don't ignore Anna's comments but don't let them upset you either...you can use her comments to your advantage...you don't need anyone's approval...just be..." How true...by Anna's comments, I think it would make anyone feel sad but you've written a great post to defy her opinions about you...this is YOUR journal of YOUR life and how fortunate are we to celebrate a piece of YOU everyday???
Anna may think your words are "snobby" or that you're just a "hipster" but the fact is your fascinating blog has truly conjured up an ARMY of creative and talented individuals who adore you, believe in you and have and will always support your amazing creations and your beautiful true self. You say you're a dork, but I disagree...you're quite charming and you captivate so many hearts with your intriguing life and alluring creations!
Anna's comments have made you even stronger because instead of deleting her comment, you've shared it with us...that takes strength & courage to even deal with negativity...and accentuate the POSITIVE! BRAVISIMO for taking the higher road!!!
Thank you for sharing this post with all of us...I think anyone who visits you is smitten with you and to me, you always inspire me to do something great...that's the type of impression you leave in my heart...
Please...don't let one "bad apple" spoil your slice of heaven...one of your many heartfelt admirers, jo

I've been reading your blog for several months now, and while I'll admit that I don't always agree with your opinions (about, say movies), I do like to read what you have to say. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and I absolutely agree with you that if someone isn't interested in yours, then they shouldn't read your blog. Simple enough, no? If everyone agreed all the time, or thought the very same thoughts, then the world would be a mighty boring place! My mom used to say "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." I think that's good advice that everyone should remember. You communicate yourself very well, and you have such a positive spirit. That's what I like best about your blog. Keep it up!
~April
Oh, one more thing. My DAD always says that you should give yourself a present everyday. --whether it's just a cup of coffee, a bubble bath, or whatever. Kindness begins with how you treat yourself. Give yourself a present today, Emily, and feel good about the person you are. We like you very much around here.

Hi Emily, I'm new to blogs but indirectly found you from rosie-posie. I'm learning that this is my first time "lurking" (what a concept) in your blog. I'm "delurking" (is that right?) to say, I'm not sure who decides what words are appropriate to describe one's self, but why do they care enough to point it out? I don't get it. Bleh, I hate when people can't just accept people and toss away what they don't care for and move on without comment or just leave and don't come back if offended.
Oops, I gotta quit, I'm starting to blog on your blog! See ya later!
Angela Haselton · January 20, 2007 at 12:04 PM
What a snarky comment to leave. If that person didn't like your post then she should have done the polite thing and leave your site without commenting. Blogs are by definition a personal thing and can be whatever the author deems right.
I agree with you about not having a lot of real-life friends who are as into all the sewing goodies as the ones that we get to meet via the crafty blogs. (Although I do get to visit with crafty ladies at my monthly doll club meeting.) It's a nice way to connect and show how pleased we are with something that we created. How can that possibly be "hipster"? Besides, why is that term considered derogatory nowadays?
I would just ignore it ... I like visiting your blog and seeing your cute little apartment. Something about you and your stuff says "Snow White" to me. Very sweet stuff, and joyful to look at.
Tami · January 20, 2007 at 12:41 PM
You know what you like in life, what excites you.
You don't do it for anyone except yourself, but you share it with others.
You do not share it to boast or brag, but to inspire and find friends.
We are inspired and we love you, just the way you are.
allyson · January 20, 2007 at 01:17 PM
emily, i usually read your blog from bloglines...so admit i guess i am kind of a lurker. i love your art and your sense of self and style.
when people don't get it...or for some reason feel the need to share the words that run through their heads that they should just take note of and think about why it is coming up for them instead of sharing it...i hope you will take a breath and just keep being you.
i love the line about the little pocket of space. yes. i feel the same way about blog world. life can feel just a tad bit lonely sometimes, and blog world reminds me that i am not alone in my thoughts, wishes, desires, beliefs.
blessings to you...

Blogging is like having a closeline of your personal thoughts, purchases and creations flapping in the wind next to a super highway. Right before I got on my computer, 5 minutes ago, I was talking to my aunt who is an artist about how inspired I am by blogs and since I've started reading them I haven't hit a slump in my creativity. It's hard sometimes, but the rewards are so good!
kate · January 20, 2007 at 03:02 PM
It is astonishing to me that people put any energy whatsoever into saying something negative. As others have said, if you don't like what you see, move on.
Everyone has a bad day but that never justifies going out of your way to make someone else feel as you do.
Your site is wonderful, as is your craft, art, & space. Keep it up.
ambika · January 20, 2007 at 03:05 PM
I discovered your blog a few weeks ago after finding your beautiful Etsy store / collection, and I've been reading some of the back months. It has totally inspired me to reorganize my apt., write a story about hedgehogs, and, maybe most importantly, to try even harder to follow through on my New Year's resolution to express myself in the sweetest and most positive way possible with my loved ones and even some of the difficult people I encounter in my job, who, much like some of the postal workers you encounter, can be intentionally difficult or just grumpy. SO - I know when you're putting yourself and your ideas out there in a public way, there will ALWAYS be (sometimes well-intentioned) naysayers - but, if nothing else, for all the people who find your blog to be a bastion of loveliness, disarming prose, and cuteness overload (in the best way possible) - I would just try to ignore those voices. Besides, I've decided the word hipster is really a meaningless designation. Some cute dressers are too trendy, some have a bad attitude, and some may wear the best shoes, and, let's face it, a lot of people, including me, love the shoes (even if they might be also hipsterish.) So that's my rant of encouragement!! Thanks for all the energy you put out there through this odd medium!

Hi there,
I've been reading your blog for about six months, and I am SO loving it... I adore your zest for life and your sense-of-humour, particularly how you can see outside of yourself. Life can be tough in so many ways and you see beauty in the small things, a scrap of fabric, the outline of a paper bird.
We should be collectively grateful for your positive outlook, and I for one am richer for reading your musings, thoughts and laughter streaming through cyberspace!
Keep it up,

I wish I had the time to read all the comments you've rec, but I gotta say I'm a little more than surprised and disappointed at the new trend of negative commenting and personal dissing (I've recently seen it other places as well). Emily, don't change a thing, about yourself, or your little space here. I know you won't and that's what I love about you. Emily, I have a confession to make. Like Anna, I am completely jealous of you! However i'm also inspired, excited, informed, entertained and delighted by you and your presence here on the web. I've met nasty girls before in my life, they used to upset me but now I just feel sorry for them for it must be awful to be full of such negative thoughts. You're beautiful and we all love you. Yes, i'm kinda jealous of you, but in a nice way that makes me so happy when i'm reading your blog and inspired to also do crafty things!
This next bit of my post has nothing really to do with Emily, but more to some of the readers of her blog....
I MUST comment on something because this really bothers me. All those people who left nasty comments on poor Rachelle's blog as just as bad as Anna. And to do so anonymously shows what a coward they are. OK, done.
It is wonderful to see how many people are supporting you Emily, please keep on blogging and don't change a thing!

I've been lurking here for the past few days...and coincidentally someone slammed me in my comments yesterday.
She took offense at something I wrote and left a couple of comments and then moved on to emailing me.
I defended my words for a little while and then realized that it was silly.
These spaces tend to be the only place where we can really just BE. Snarky or funny or angry or bitter or ANYTHING...if people don't like it - they should click away.
I'm sure all 127 of the comments before me said that same thing - I just thought I'd de-lurk and tell you that I know how you feel.
- looking forward to reading you in the future...

I have been reading your blog and observing your shop for quite a few months now and so often I find my own thoughts and opinions coming out through your words. It's amazing to have someone also revel in the things I sometimes feel nobody else knows about.
I'm an Australian just moved to America so the isolation from people I know is a little daunting, it would make me so joyful if I could ever make friends with someone just like you.
Nicole · January 22, 2007 at 03:52 PM
WOW. I can't believe someone would go out of their way to put someone down VIA THE INTERNET. I come across people EVERYDAY who are just unhappy, bitter people who just thrive on putting other people down. What is with that? I have never EVER, however, seen it done on a blog before. That is just...pathetic. My comment to that reader is that if you don't like a blog, don't bookmark it, don't ever read it again, and go on your way. That isn't so hard is it? No one is forcing anyone to read this blog or any other. Please spare us of your negativism. We enjoy our little button-loving community and we shouldn't be made to feel as though we have to defend it against the likes of you.
Tomoe · January 22, 2007 at 04:39 PM

Personally, I think your blog is 10 times better than anything on a newstand at the grocery store. Your writing is charming and yet disarmingly quirky and endearing.
Unlike the Cosmo mag formula of blathering on about "Bikini Diets,"101 Ways to Wow Him in Bed," and "10 Fashion Must Haves That You Must Buy So You Can Look Like everyone Else And We Can Get Paid By Advertisers," you've actually cultivated your own sense of style and artistic aesthetic. Quite frankly, if popular culture had more thoughtful people like you writing and creating art, we probably wouldn't have all this silly anorexic/drug addict nonsense. If people are threatened by your talent, too bad for them!
-- an early 20 something girl who is really irritated with pop culture and thinks your blog is just great.

Don't change or edit anything here. People with nasty opinions need to mind their P&Q's and keep it to themselves. Don't let it get you down or cause you to question anything about who you are.
You are an inspiration.
