The Monday Review

August 14, 2006 · Artsy (Mine), Artsy (Other Folks'), Hooray for Mail!

Hello dollfaces!

I had a nice little weekend, and I hope that everyone else did too. The weather here has continued to be so lovely, so everything just seems a little better than it otherwise would, you know? Leaving the house is so much more fun when it is beautiful and comfortable out-of-doors.

On Saturday, a gaggle of us went to The Cloisters, where, let's not kid ourselves, the centerpiece of the whole shebang is their room of the Unicorn Tapestries:

I've been seeing these images in books for all of my life, and they've always seemed so magical and also a little terrifying. My grandfather (who, in his lifetime, has sailed his boat to the Keys for 4 months out of the year, 20 years in a row, also knits, only wears orange socks, and loves unicorns) would have loved it so much! I hope he gets to go there one of these days!

Here is a silly picture of me and my darlings:

Greg was the camera man.

On the mail front, an AMAZING haul of vintage trim came in the mail. Unfortunately, I think I have a little competition for ownership:
Trim

Eliot was going absolutely crazy over this stuff. But then it occured to me that someone who would accumulate all of this trim was more than likely a pretend elderly lady, and maybe she had a healthy supply of catnip for all of the cats that I imagine she had.

Finally, this is the last item to share today:

Littlered2
The original is gone as of yesterday, but there are prints available if you love Little Red as much as I do.

There will be more Samplers up  in the shop tomorrow circa 1:00 pm EST, and that's all that I have for today! Off to spend some more time with my beloved houseguest before she turns into a pumpkin and has to head off to the land of endless security measures tomorrow afternoon.

I used to live right down the hill from the Cloisters in Inwood. Some of my fondest New York memories are of hiking up to the castle on free admission days and sitting in the herb garden while reading a book and eating licorice.

The Unicorn Tapestries *are* wonderful, aren't they? I haven't seen them in person in years but my Mom has a huge needlepoint canvas that she did of "The Unicorn in Captivity." My brother and I bought her the kit from the Cloisters gift shop as a holiday present one year and it was the first needlepoint project she ever did. It was a pretty ambitious first project and she's become a much more accomplished needlepointer since then but I still love the piece anyway. It's a reminder of one of my favorite places in the city.

Your grandfather sounds like the coolest grandfather ever!

I am so jealous that you got to see those gorgeous unicorn tapestries... And your grandfather sounds like a wonderful storybook-sort-of-awesome person.

Here's hoping I'll finally be quick enough to snag one of your samplers. (No work tomorrow, so there's a definite possibility. :)

(P.S. I've never commented before but have been admiring your art/crafty things for quite some time. That "poor college student" thing is all that's keeping me from snatching up everything you have for sale. :)

Hi Emily, love little miss red riding hood and I got my print in the mail yesterday and I love it! Can't wait to get it framed and looking forward to the day when my son asks me what those funny round things are in the background ( LP records!). Will give you lovely etsy feedback today! I have pics of those unicorns in a book and had no idea they were near you!Looks like you had a fun day!

I love Little Red Riding Hood as well. I just sold an original of one of my Little Red Riding Hood paintings and I actually got sad when I shipped it. I felt paniced when I got home like a child was missing or something. I happy she has a new loving hom in Australia but still sad to see her go. When I shipped her I found out she will be on a boat for 4-6 weeks which made me even more concerned for her wellbeing. I am sure she will be fine though. I must sound crazy. Do you ever get that attached to your work Emily?

Ok, I'm showing my ignorance here, I had *no idea* that the Unicorn Tapestry was in the United States. How incredible that you've been able to visit it! Wow! I'm jealous.

Little red is so forlorn and sweet!
The unicorn tapestries, is there a princess to the side? I recall a 3rd or 4th grade creative writing project,in which I wrote inspired by only the art.
